Q:

Yeah sounds pathetic, but the probably 2nd most active (compared to the queue sizes publiced by anet) server in europe (riverside [DE]) just got Outmanned buff on 2 of the 4 battlegrounds at the absolute europe primetime.
Maybe they see they cant face their opponents and quit, maybe they leave to WoW:MoP or maybe exploits (or tactics near to whats called an exploit) and nightcapping is (even anet says it isnt) an issue.

i’m curious to know how the stats on your server are.
For myself i didnt took a single fight in WvW since Saturday, and with todays patch who didnt inflict wvw at all, im quiet sure i wont even login for some time (until anet brings some major fixes to wvw)
however: positive even the queue for SM are quiet short right now, maybe anets goal was to reduce queue size, by keeping night capping & co up

Our server doesn’t have a good “night presence” so we usually lose. That and we don’t have good hackers on our server lol. First day there’s usually a que but after that there isn’t. We get hacked first day and night capped first night and the match is pretty much over for us. So why bother if there’s zero chance of winning?

I love it. I keep trying to pry myself away from it to level my alts, but then I just get sucked into it on my alts and spending my entire night in it every night. We are winning lately, but I look forward to the match we start getting beat. The hard situations are the most fun. Having to use the guild/group hivemind to problem solve in real time with real consequences. I LOVE it.

Well I think it’s more that once you’ve fallen 30-40k behind you can’t win. Even if you completely destroy a night capping server during the day, you can’t do anything without an active night population.

Having a 100-120 point lead for 4-5hours is less than having a 600 lead for 1 hour after pve’ing down the maps at 2 am.

So since your going to lose no matter how well you play it’s really frustrating.

Also it’s also not like you can recruit a night team over night. It takes time and since every server out there is clamoring for guilds and players with the ability to play at night it’s tough competition. If your already losing why would they want to join you rather than a server that is already winning?

You got to find a night guild that wants to fight and mash skulls, and unfortunately there are not that many around.

I enjoy World vs World a lot, maybe because I am a server with players 24/7. I’ll tell myself only for a few hours, then 12 hours later happens. The push and pull. Communicating back and forth with allies and scouting enemy positions.
Tower defense is the most fun I have, trying to hold back the hordes while calling out for support, watching the ally zerg/mob come up like a wave and destroy the invaders.

World vs World is a lot of fun, I know some servers are having problems with some stuff. But for me, yes the way WvW is, I enjoy it.

(Maybe orbs should change to karma bonus, instead of health)

WvW’s only enjoyable now if I don’t have to be the guy spending for upgrades and siege, since 9 out of 10 times anything I do late my time is going to get wiped out by nightcappers who face no resistance as they sweep across the map—a waste of my money when said siege merely makes it easier to defend during primetime and isn’t the only way we’re holding on to something.

The nightcapping scourge, which can fly both ways on certain servers, is something that’s going to screw with the matching system forever and ruins the enjoyment of all involved.

It’s certainly not fun to knock over empty Keeps, sitting there at rams for five minutes.. when people say they enjoy that, I imagine what they really mean is that they enjoy the 53k experience and 1.2k karma that flies in for no effort.
It’s not fun waking up to see the map is an entirely different color, when you had your own third (or slightly more) not ten hours ago.
It’s not fun dropping cash on stuff that won’t last four hours if you spend it near the end of primetime, instead of the start.
It’s not fun losing a matchup because while one server faces no resistance at night, you don’t have an opportunity to pull the same nightcapping shenanigans because that THIRD server is actually contesting you during the day, trying to split the pie that the first gets to eat by itself.

The only thing that matters is the next objective. Whether that’s building up defenses or helping a supply run or taking down a keep, that’s the only thing that matters.

Besides, what does “winning” really mean in this context? Your server score is relative. If one server is rated at 100 and another is rated at 10 does it mean the higher rated server is more fun? Not in the slightest. The server rated at 100 may go to a bracket where they are hopelessly outclassed for a week and the lower rated server may goto a bracket where they are far more competitive. It’s all relative.

My advice for the average player is to stop looking at the score and have some fun. There’s alot to be had out there when you band together and fight!

This exactly. Our server is a 24/7 server and we are currently playing against 2 primetime only servers. The winning part is not the fun part. The competition is where its at. If people ignore the score and focus more on the “how dare they own that tower, that belongs to US!” aspect of the game, then you can have some fun. The score is a tool that will eventually even out the playtimes and seriousness of the servers so that everyon can have fun. Don’t stress out about the score as much, just play and have fun.

This… I hardly look at the score at all… I didn’t miss it in DAoC and I don’t need it in this game either. All it seems to do is make people cry about “night capping”.. as if other people are only allowed to play when they are online.

Don’t need the score to tell me that kitten screwed up when I wake up and I’m locked in my spawn because the night team capped the entire map and built arrow carts and ballistas at all 3 spawn exits.

Benefits for WvW accumulate over time as a product of doing well at given times. The final score is indicative of not just who is “winning the match overall”, but which server has the biggest buffs as a result of it. DAoC provided buffs for control of the keeps at that moment—like Orbs—not by tallying five points per camp every 15 minutes, and so on.

Lol…it always makes me laugh when I see all the QQing over ‘NA-night-capping’. As an Oceanic player, we often get to NA-night-cap. Most of the time, there is stiff resistance from the other servers – despite it being easy-NA-night-capping-time. During NA-prime-time, we lose most, if not all of what we have gained.

Do I cry about it and blame it on ANet?
No.

Why not?
Because I know how to fix the problem. Go to a server with a strong NA presence and help them out by being NA-night-crew and strengthening the server as a result.

Everyone knows that this is the only current solution. Am I likely to do this? Depends on if my friends are willing to move as well.

There’s nothing ‘reasonable’ that ANet can do about it. Should I be punished (have scores reduced/scaled etc) because you are in bed/sick/crying in a corner/your moms taken your computer away?

When you play in a team sport, do you QQ to the organiser if the team you are in has players who can’t make it on certain days? Does the other team get punished because you don’t have all your players?

Harden up.

Currently, my server is getting it’s kitten handed to it and I am not enjoying WvW at all.
Previously, my server was handing everyone else their kitten and I was not enjoying WvW at all.
When the fight is closer then I enjoy the hell out of some WvW.

Getting camped in your spawn is zero fun.
Camping others in their spawn is zero fun.

George – that was a good post before you removed it. I’ve been on both sides of the Night capping. It never dissuaded me from entering even though we were down to +10 while the other server was at +700. But alot of players see the score and say “What’s the point?” and I can’t really argue with that.

I think the score is the biggest problem right now. Alot of players can’t ignore it and it’s a morale breaker. I think night capping is a symptom, but not the root of the issue.

If you pushed ‘B’ and all you saw were the buffs your team had and couldn’t see the score or how many potential objectives you held I think many many more would join. Not totally on topic but I also think queue times should be stated here as well. (That’s for another discussion)

The same scoring system could occur in the background all while letting us just fight it out. It’s a snowball effect you see. If you never saw the score late night players would be much more apt to get out there an play, even when nightcapping is occuring against them. You could at least put up token resistance to prevent the nightcapping server from setting up siege at your spawn. So you stand a much better chance of fighting back.

To me, Anet is up against the human condition here and that’s tough to deal with. There is no magic recipe and no Algo is going to fix it. It needs to be fixed incrementally. (Stopping server xfers would be a start!) If you try and take away as many factors as you can that allow a player to be demoralized before stepping onto the field of battle – you’re going in the right direction.

You can’t be locked into your spawn.. since you have 3 routes leading out of your spawn! Next time you’re in that position, just look at the paths left and right at the gate…

I feel you, we face the same problem on Far shiverpeaks, its a problem and a big problem it feels like playing a game impossible to win no matter the effort, im hoping for a fix soon, if its ignored im afraid i will find some other game with chances of winning.

You mention you guys was hacked, i read that in a few posts but noone mentions what happend? did someone from Vizunah square also flyhack the orb from you guys? just curious.

This game mode is fun, the hackers and exploits arent. The passive actions from Anet are even less fun. They just ban the guys when the damage is done. They dont prevent hacking, the game is not secure at all and they dont repair the damage done by hackers, they just ban the reported hackers. So, all the fun from this game mode itself is destroyed by hackers and anet.

Morale is a funny creature. If I were to guess the people who’s servers have active queues that seem to be growing longer are the servers that are either in close fights or are winning.

The servers that are experiencing significant drops in the queue times are the servers that are losing.

The problem with week long matches that involve contests where one server dominates the other two through population domination is that is saps the morale of those servers. This, in turn, leads to less people joining the battle since the question becomes, “Why bother?”

I really hope ArenaNet links points per hour to population. If all sides are at full population then full score is given.

If one side is at full population and the other other sides have a fraction of their population then that side should get a fraction of the score. Conversely, the out-numbered side should get a bonus to whatever they might hold.

I’m sure there’s a solid algorithm that can take care of this.

Anyway, to the OP: Wait until Friday when there is a new opponent. WvW interest will be back. At least the weekends are good for WvW but the way the score is counted it gives population imbalances are too much weight. This leads to all kinds of silliness including, if I were to guess, people quitting the game out of frustration and that isn’t cool.

ArenaNet needs to fix how points are given to reflect population imbalances. They don’t need to cap servers or limit numbers – they just need to set it up so that the points given reflect the ‘difficulty’ of the conditions in the map. There really is no difficulty for one side to destroy their opponents if they outman them.

If people knew that they would get ‘bonus’ points for holding ONE keep against overwhelming odds people would do it. Instead, it’s simpler to just log out and avoid WvW once the population imbalance becomes too great.

The only time this doesn’t hold true is if the match-up is really close and the out-numbered side sees hope and value into holding out in a single map (usually Eternal) against the larger population. If the outnumbered side can maintain say, 130 or so points from a single map and it allows the rest of the timeslots to still compete then they will do so – as evidenced on Tarnished Coast.

Even outnumbered people are still fighting their hearts out in Eternal (no, there is no queue against a server that does have a queue) while giving up all the borderlands – in that people either stop playing WvW during that timeframe or they migrate to where the fight is – Eternal.

But, that’s an abnormal situation brought about by high morale on Tarnished Coast coupled with there by a clear value to doing this – Tarnished Coast regained the point lead and now holds it through the being outnumbered time. Interestingly, this outnumbered time is becoming smaller and smaller as the opposing server is losing morale and seeing ‘no point’ to ‘bothering’ to log in even during their peak times.

As a 90% of the time WvW’er, i can say some of the things are just bizzaro world crazy to me.

The mere fact that Orbs, which the side who grabs the most, are usually already more populated and have taken most of the game’s objectives. Why Anet would give that HP and Power bonuses is beyond idiotic. Orbs should represent a side that has already conquered areas, so why not make the bonuses toward a defensive posture. Like cheaper upgrades for towers and such, faster repair and upgrades on such, and maybe even faster supplies delivered. And more importantly, more points toward the score.

But IMO the bonuses for being outnumbered should be increased fighting power and health. How does XP and karma boosts help me if my side is outnumbered 5 to 1 anet. WTF is with that nonsense!.

Oh one last little grumble here, I sit in que while my side is outnumbered like 3 to 1, we even had the outmanned tag just minutes prior to me disconneting. Yet now when I try to get in I sit in a que at 10am? Yeah, I know why, because the other server was full with tripple our number.

When Anet admits their data base for servers is broken, then maybe we can at least have hope they will stop this nonsense allowing one server to pack the place, while another server sits in que because of it.
