Few questions about WvW from new player
Hey guys
I just got the game yesterday and have spent all my time in spvp working out what classes I like, I think im going with thief.
So I wanted to know in reguard for WvW i see it seems to use your PvE character and then boosts dmg to max lvl? But i still need pve levels to have skills and traits etc.
So my question is, is WvW not worth doing until i have grinded PvE to max level?
Im not a big fan of questing but it seems the fastest way to level so i guess ill have to so I can be optimal in WvW?
Thanks for some guidance this game is totally overwhelming for a new player!
So you went with the most overpowered class in the game, congratulations.
You can now run around in WvW at whatever level you are with no gear and still win every fight you come across. Just make sure you hit all your keys before they die to throw in some variety.
On a more “serious” note, I’ve had no problem starting WvWvW at lvl 2 and still winning against some people. Run with the zerg and you won’t have any issues.

someone’s a bit bitter?
I was asking for help learning after 1 day with the game, not sarcasm and pointless flaming…

… You don’t seem to understand where a thief’s damage actually comes from.
:/
Here I’ll be completely honest with you this time, thieves in WvWvW are no help at all, you would be better suited to reroll an engineer or necro, they are best for helping out your team. Good luck and stay safe out there!

You can level while WvW’ing, although results may vary. PVE levelling is probably more consistent than PVP. THere are times in PVP where you may rake in XP and other times where you may get squadoosh.

im not going to roll a class i dont want to play and level in pve just to help in 1 game mode. I just want help understanding the game dynamics not the class system and combat of the game…
your not gonan get a nice anwser from the forums , 95% of them hate thieves, a thiefs power comes from goign against ppl who arn’t as geared as they should be when they are a full glass cannon build, you can run a thief in WvW in a havok squad type setting which will get you lots of xp and have you constantly moving and capping. you wont be doing as much kill of players but the xp is in dolyaks and supply camps , once your fully geared then you can bath in the tears of all these people who cant seem to dodge roll and instead come to the forums to cry that thieves need to be nerfed

thanks, so is there a level i should quest to before considering WvW? I want to not get totally smashed but dosent it take months to max a character?
ok so level to 10 in pve then go WvW and im nopt going to be levelling that much slower?

As I mentioned in my other post after yours, I would PvE until a minimum of level 10, and maybe all the way to 30 (when you can get your first elite). As for time to level a character, after you have an 80 or 2 you can easily level another to 80 in just a few days. I brought my necro from 30 to 80 in about a week, and I spent quite a bit of time playing on my thief and guardian during that time period.
I started WvW right off the bat. You get levelled up for HP and such. Keep in mind that even though you get autolevelled to 80 you are not the same as a true 80. You’re undergeared and don’t have all the skills.
That said, I though it was fun running around in there even at level 2. I got smashed, but I still do.
Some people don’t like going into PVP situations unless they are fully geared and 100% ready to go. Some don’t care and will run around undergeared having a ball doing what they can.
If you’re the former, it may take a few weeks to a couple of months to gear up in PVE world depending on how much you can play. If you’re the latter, do a few levels in PVE to get acquainted with the basics of the game and your class, then jump into PVP a bit.

I would say get all of your utility slots except for your elite and then head out to wvw. They you should be able to do well even if you are in small squads

You’ll be fine doing it that way.

You’ll probably level slower in WvW until at least around 50 or 60, but it’s more important to be just playing the game for fun rather than trying to speed through things as quickly as possible. If you wanted the absolute fastest method of leveling, that would be dumping money into crafting.
I leveled one of my characters from 5-80 purely in WvW. Results vary, but it’s totally doable.
Be sure to wear toughness and HP gear though. Otherwise you’re just gonna get gibbed everywhere.
Oh, and we’d all like to take a moment to give you one quick pointer about WvW:
Don’t take supplies from keeps/towers/SM. There’s certain times when it might be appropriate, but until you know when those times are, make sure you always get your supplies from supply camps, and not from anywhere else.
To make leveling an option in WvW you have to do at least 4% of the damage to the enemy, this will give you experience and loot.
There are a few good guides around the internet on “best practice” for leveling and traiting a thief, guru is a good place to start.
Sitting on siege is also a good option, but remember that powerful siege engines were nerfed to a 5 target effect – not full area.
Thief is the second op, first is warrior.
I play since lvl 2 (since official game launch, maybe now that is not a good idea :P), u can learn some exp and karma, but is slower than pve. The most important for me is the fun, i only do wvw ><
If u dont care the lore, u can go to lvl 80 pretty fast. Hearts and events in pve, no map completion.
And yes, u will notice the difference between green gear and exotic gear. But u can pick fights too, or ambush ppl, stay with zergs.
And if u r good u will not need all exotic
Just have fun, do pve, then wvw, then pve, then wvw, gather, craft, dungeons (if u like that, i dont like that ><)

One thing that makes a difference is what server you are on. If you are on a server that is very competitive at WvW, you have a stonger chance to get with a zerg and make lots of xp that way. If you do that, the xp will flow in and you will level very quickly.
If on the other hand, you are on a server that is constantly at the bottom of their tier’s matchup, you will be facing a lot more uphill fights and it will probably be tougher.
As a lower level, your safest spot is in a zerg, where you have lots of friendlies around you, or manning siege on a wall that is being attacked (an arrow cart can be a low level player’s dream against an attacking zerg). Even a camp capping team will generate a lot of xp for you.
Don’t pick a class because you think it’s good at WvW. Pick a class you think looks fun and that you want to play. Play that class, study the skills/traits, study how those skills and traits work together. Learn the class inside and out. Then, no matter what class you have chosen, you will be the most effective you can be.
And above all… have fun!

so how do i get gear within wvw? or is it all pve stuff i need to bring in with me? so if i levelled from lvl 4 id always be in my starter gear unless i dropped back into pve to gear?
also how do i find a zerg? my server is normally dominant every time ive looked at the wvw map but i can never find big fights?

I beg to differ Thiefs are a huge asset in the zerg beside the backstab variety (there good for ganking heavyly defended yaks though).
one Shortbow skill 2/4 Clusterbomb and poisonshot((defence and wall assault)) Can lob the clusterbomb at assauters from the wall without having to stand on the ledge.
Shortbow skill 2 Clusterbomb Best Aoe Combo Finisher in the game if the thief is right next the Combo Field can spam it for Mass Heals…mass Retailiation Mass stealth mass Blindness. mass AoE weakness(that one the thief can do all by himself)
Scorpian wire. rip people off walls Nuff said.
Shadow Refuge…<—- Makes em the best Field Reviver in the game even Lacking an insta Down saver.
Signet of Malice + runes of the Centaur, Specced for Boon duration increase Perma run speed for traveling for a party of 5.
No other class can Roam like a thief and get from long distance point A to Point B faster. Great for Supply running….
And on top of that Supply Decent Damage against players and is most dubbed Most annoying Class to kill.
IN other words the Theif is absolutely far from the most useless Class in WvW there probably one of the most usefull classes to comeby.

Enemies in WvW drop level appropriate items. If you don’t find the gear you need, you still have access to the trading post, and can pick up gear there.
For finding a group of allies in WvW, you can ask in /t chat if there’s anything that people are focusing on. Also, if you see any blue diamonds on the map, that is a commander, and there’s usually quite a few players around them.
The answer to your question is: it depends.
What you might want to ask yourself is how effective do you want to be in WvW. At lower levels, you may not have many traits or utility slots open. Or any at all. This is something to think about.
But please, do not let that stop you at all. If you decide to play at a lower level, than I highly recommend that you stick with a zerg. This is especially true if you never played WvW in the first place. I leveled my ranger from 15 to 80. Not all was in WvW, but I spent a huge part of my playing in it.
Just remember, everyone can contribute, regardless if you are taking a keep or defending your garrison. So I encourage you to jump in and enjoy the fun that is WvW.

To add a couple:
Clusterbomb is one of the best skills for clearing siege equipment from enemy walls.
Stealth stomping.
Blinding Powder can be used similarly to Shadow Refuge to help res allies.
Steal → Caltrops → Get out can seriously hamper any group of opponents, and can often scatter “back line” groups in enemy zergs.
Perhaps most useful is stealthing in to attack siege operators at the start of an attack (such as at a defended supply camp). An unmanned ballista or arrow cart is as useful as a destroyed one.
ok guys, ill take a look at it when im online tomorrow, so i go into WvW and look for the blue marker and then go to them and find a big group and go with them and just do what i can, kills drop items i can use and give me exp?
You can level in WvW no problem. It is slower than the PVE route, but a lot more fun imo…
Things that are awesome for lowbies in WvW:
1. Manning Siege – Arrow Carts and Ballistas for the easy kills
2. Running Supply to keep to build
3. If you have a group where they are all 80 and will carry you, a havoc/camp flipping squad is awesome XP/karma

Yea. At a low level and especially for a new player, it is definitely safety in numbers. I’d say you will start seeing an easier time playing your character in WvW around lvl 20. Since you will have both utility slots unlocked.
Just know your limits and have fun. Best thing about this game is you have a lot of options to play how you want. Go ahead and lvl from 2-80 strictly in WvW!

I would also recommend that you consider joining a WvW guild if at all possible. Maybe not one of the hardcore ones, but perhaps one that may not be extreme. You’ll get some good info and recommendations for playing WvW.

so for a guild do i just ask for an invite in the chat box when in WvW? how can i tell if they are good rather than a few random players?
so for a guild do i just ask for an invite in the chat box when in WvW? how can i tell if they are good rather than a few random players?
Two very good questions. Let me answer them in order.
1. You can ask in chat if you like, but the best is if you know a recruiter’s name and whisper for an invite or if you have a friend in that guild, they can ask.
2. How can you tell if that guild is good? Okay, it depends. If you are looking for a guild with good WvW presence, keep an eye out for guild tags. After a while, you’ll notice the same ones over and over. This also includes the number of people carrying the tags. Hang with one of them. Follow any of their commanders. Talk to them in chat. If you like being with them, ask for an invite. Also keep in mind that some guilds would prefer that you have a WvW presence before they would invite you. This is easy to do. Just play WvW. Play all aspects from zerging, to defense of a supply camp, to escorting yaks, to dropping and building siege. People will begin to notice your commitment to your server and you’ll probably have to start refusing invites.
One more thing about joining guilds. Always keep in mind any requirements that they have. Some require 100% repping, others you need to be in TeamSpeak/Vent/Raidcall. Some have mandatory times to be on. Just keep those in mind when choosing.
