How do you counter this?
autoattack with 1-chain. if it hits an enemy in stealth, it will proceed to the second skill in the chain and you will know you’ve found an enemy.
Also, isn’t there something called a stealth trap?

Fair enough, I’ve never used it because i’ve found that first method more than effective enough for discovering stealthed enemies.
Watch for the poofs of smoke, shadow refuge icons, doors/walls being cloak & daggered, or NPCs acting funny.
That being said….
As a thief myself, I ABSOLUTELY believe that there should be a mechanic to penalize long-duration stealth for thieves.
For example – every second that they are in stealth, they get an additional stack of “Fatigue”. Every second that they are visible, they lose a stack of Fatigue. If they reach 25 stacks of Fatigue, they are revealed with a 5 second Revealed debuff.
In practice, a normally stealthing thief will never reach this limit – Shadow Refuge (3s + 10s) + hide in shadows (4s traited) and a C&D (4s traited) and you’d still be under the limit at 21 stacks of Fatigue.
What this would stop:
Perpetual C&D off of gates/walls.
Permanent D/P invis.
It would also provide a fight time limit for Thieves that are hidden for the majority of the fight – if the thief spends more time invisible than visible, eventually the Fatigue will catch up.
You know, I’m going to post this in another topic as putting it in a QQ topic isn’t the wisest thing….

Great idea. It could use some tweaking but the core mechanic of the idea is interesting and seems like a good fit.
Honestly though I think there should be a bit more of a rock, paper, scissors game being played. Give rangers the reveal trap, don’t make it cost badges/karma
Utility: Reveal Trap: When this trap is triggered, it reveals all stealthed foes in a 300 radius
Elite: Reveal Spirit: Pulses every 5 seconds for 30 seconds. Each pulse reveals stealthed foes in a 900 radius

neither would it matter they would be long gone, its’s hard to catch up with heart seeking thieves bouncing off into the distance while every other class has an asthma attack trying to keep up.
Necro mark every gate and lip of top of stairs. If the necro mark goes “off” you narrow down where they are. Get ele’s to aoe the area as soon as you see the necro mark activate.
The best counter is to give them something they can’t resist.
Get a squishy class, and have them stand in a secluded corner, away from activity, as if they have gone af_k.
Thieves are killers by nature, so this easy mark will be too tempting to resist, thinking ‘an easy kill, no one will notice’. He’ll reveal himself, not being able to pass up seeing a 12k backstab. As he goes in for the stomp, that’s when you pounce. Boom! Dead thief.
Alternate ending: He gets the stomp, C&D’s, and leaves laughing.

So you scare them out of your keep? Then mission accomplished. It’s not like they have a lot of places to hide in towers. And even though they call it a mesmer sweep, it isn’t exclusive to searching for mesmers.

It’s always funny when some people defend this perma stealth with nonsense. Why does this class needs so much special attention that they even need to make traps to basically counter mostly just 1 class. Is there any other class which needs so much attention except for a stray mesmer after taking a keep so he/she can’t make a portal? Which btw is still less attention needed then a perma stealth thief keeping keeps contested.
I’m not sure what Anet is doing these days with messing around with this thief issue and the arrow carts letting them shoot through gates since that makes also a lot of sense…

You use a stealth trap, and keep is very small, I could understand SMC but a keep, very easy to weed out thieves. Play staff ele and use fire 2 and 5, use earth and water 4 to slow them down. If your a knockback class, when they go in shadow refuge, knock them out of it.
Aint hard.

Considering that Thieves are 3rd in straightline mobility that’s just plain bullkitten, lol.
all is vain

You honestly thought the trap was directed at thieves. There’s this little thing called a Veil Bomb. And they’re quite a popular tactic in organized zergs (yes, those are a thing), and as the name suggest, it uses the mesmer skill “Veil” to mass stealth the zerg better then any Blind Powder, Shadow Refuge, or Mass Invis ever can.

1: read “mostly 1 class”
2: yes they put a trap mainly too counter 1 ABILITY…. like do you really belief that?
Give thief’s more survival in SPvP give them more dmg/utility in PvE but please stop defending this perma stealth bs in WvW where they can keep places contested.

lol! so you run around Stonemist swinging randomly waiting for your second skill in a chain to appear. Some ranged classes need to target them first, what then? call for a guardian or fighter to come help swing around randomly for 30mins. That sounds like a good counter to stealth.
honestly some people… /facepalm.

Interesting…. tho this “fatigue” should only apply on skills you put “effort” into. EG: blinding powder wouldn’t take any effort, powder hanging in the air isn’t you holding it up there. Nor the black powder from pistol. A ‘spell’ takes effort to maintain, environmental effects don’t, I’d say. After all, the way stealth works here, it’s a spell. At least to me. Makes more sense then nothing being able to see you cause you crouched like in Skyrim, tho makes for an easy slit throat. And I do love me those too.

No kidding. Try catching an ele that doesn’t want to stand. Ranger has same signet speed, plus a horn rush

I know rangers are certainly faster than thieves, but what’s 2nd if thieves are 3rd? I always considered them right behind ranger. Eles are hard to catch because they run so many stun breaks/cond removal, not because of their straight line mobility. They’re actually in the middle for straight running.
Group of thieves that stay inside keep in stealth and wait for opportunity to kill lord.
I can’t think anything else than having group of players guarding keep lord and hope thieves get bored and leave or cover whole inner keep with stealth traps.
Any other suggestions?
Proper mesmer sweep after capture. I play WvW since first BWE and i never seen survivors after competent mesmer sweep, you just need call out location of thieves in TS and then they are dead.
