Is recoloring enemy armor necessary in WvW?
I’d rather the RGB dye-washes not exist either, but I would sacrifice other worlds seeing my dye job if it meant that it saved substantially on bandwidth.
I’m not saying it would, but it’s a possibility that comes to mind in the midst of all the concerns about lag and culling.
“He’s like a man with a fork in a world of soup.”
Huh. I never even noticed that it did that.
Guess I’m too busy fighting.
I’m curious why they don’t show colors but they DO show that you have hat #48, backpiece #12, chest armor #892, boots #681, gloves #211, etc.
I would think if they wanted to save bandwidth/memory/CPU, they could chop everyone down to, say, 1 fixed “look” per class, at least for enemies. I really pay no attention to what anyone is wearing in WvW so it seems like a waste.
Planetside always had like….4 uniforms. Total. Saves a lot of texture loading, I imagine.
A game that’s 100% WvW

Its really for seeing things far away. So far you can’t even tell if they’re allies based on your map proximity.
Server: Darkhaven. The Besthaven.

Indeed, we’re not fighting for a faction with a uniform, which makes it tough. PS has that optimisation purely because the story and setup support it.
They removed the custom dyes because it does help when trying to optimise network code and bandwidth. It may not seem like much data to describe custom dyes… but when you think each item can have 3-4, and you have 6 items, and you multiply that by the number of people in a zerg, it quickly becomes a sizeable addition to the payload the server needs to send to every other player in range.

Not that I’m very pro uniforms but here we fight in the mists in the representation of “guild wars” of the past. It’s not inconceivable that we could look like uniformed soldiers we fought. Mists allow you to deus ex machina anything into the game, as a fractal Mr.Manhattan aptly demonstrated.
Well if showing custom dyes made culling worse I wouldn’t want it then. (And if generic models made culling better I would want that…)

If they removed the models that would help a lot. We could just fight nameplates!
It seems pretty unlikely to be bandwidth. The more information you can get about what’s going on at a glance the more able you are to implement strategies. It’s just good UI/UX and also they have some high hopes for spectator modes in the future?
Most other games featuring faction vs faction, RvR, whatever don’t have the issue because the factions looked different at a glance…
I mean the thing where if you’re fighting a server, and they’re blue on the map, it recolors their armor so that it’s blue, or green if they’re green and red if they’re red.
Vanity is part of the game IMO and I’m disappointed that the enemy can’t see my fabulous dye job. I paid good money for those dyes. I’m not sure that recoloring the armor adds much – it’s not like I’m confused who I’m fighting or anything, they have red names above their heads and red = kill. Typically people don’t refer to enemy server by color either, they refer to them by name.
I would rather the recoloring weren’t there personally.
This adds an advantage to you.
This allows you to visually differentiate the two teams from one another (If they are fighting in the same direct space) and to see which team the person is from afar. (Too far for names to show up)
I don’t see why people want to do this to look better to the other teams rather than perform better.
Wait a minute, if these Mist Wars are being fought in the past; why not make everyone look like an (Ascalon) ghost? That should help the culling and still look somewhat decent, right?

Ew! Gross!
I like my TA skins.
(Fun idea tho)

I have no idea why I didn’t think of this, but it makes sense. Perhaps, then they could just make it an option to turn on world-coloring, if it’s deemed that necessary at all.

Would require quite a lot of extra coding to make a niche option for older content.
Not really worth the time, I think.
Wouldn’t you rather have more events and patches instead?
