The word Zerg replaced the word Mob.
E.A.D.
Mobs are npcs. Zergs are a group people who stick to large groups and think they have skill when it takes 15 of them to chase down and kill 1 person. And they like to guard hug when confronted with the slightest opposition.
“A mob, mobile or monster is a computer-controlled non-player character (NPC) in a computer game such as an MMORPG1 or MUD.23 Depending on context, all such characters in a game may be considered “mobs”,42 or usage may be limited to hostile NPCs and/or NPCs vulnerable to attack."
As long as I’ve been gaming enemy npcs in online games have always been called mobs. Never once have I seen it used to describe a group of players. The term was being used as such long before GW1 was ever released.

I dont like the word zerg either. Its a stupid word imo. But i dont really have an alternative. I dont agree with mob, because when i think of mob i think of creatures and npcs. But o well. I doubt itll ever be changed from zerg anyways.

I think the word Zerg is being used to it’s fullest potential. its far easier to say there is a zerg headed south than trying to describe the large group of roaming toolbags blindly capping and moving onward like EXP starved Locust.
Zerg is a good word, it’s accurate and in line with the tactic that it was given the name for in the first place.
If someone wants to lead a mob, or a team, or a squad and they are anti zerg, they will use the word they want to replace the negative vibe provided by the word Zerg.
Yak’s Bend.
To me, zerging is only a negative connotation when applied to how a guild runs. A zerg guild is a guild that needs numbers to compete. When it comes to PuGs, especially with the size of WvW maps and how the game is designed, the zerg is simply the primary numbered melting pot force on the map.
Part of the connotation of “zerg” is also the hive mind which is barely kept in check by commanders… which is also referred to as a mob mentality. Zerg is more appropriate than mob, however, because the term mob refers to any group (it’s also the collective noun for kangaroos) while the term zerg refers to a tactic of throwing large numbers of cannon fodder at a target.

Niobe 80 Guardian, Symbaoe 45 Ele

And this negative connation is a good thing. A zerg tactic is a terrible tactic and deserves the negative connotation that comes with it (though in some circumstances it does prove to be effective).
like was stated, the standard mmo term for hostile npc’s is mob, so calling zergs mobs(another standard mmo term) would only confuse the vast majority of people.
“mob” in MMO slang is a hostile NPC.
“zerg” is a starcraft race that wins on numbers and speed.
in other words, it’s a more accurate and clear description of what a “huge group of players speeding through the map and killing everything before they have the time to react” is.
The word zerg is used properly for the most part in this game. Coming from Warhammer there was the zerg and there were the premades. When letting people know where each was at you would use the word Zerg for the large mindless killing machine that would roam the zones and capture the keeps. While the premades were called out mostly by guild tag or by player name. But since we can not see player names in this game or see who killed us we can’t call out where Player X’s group is at. So we call out guilds. If you see a group of skilled players all together in the same guild you will most likely use that when calling them out in Map. Ei “There is a group of Run Like Hell on the Godslore Supply camp”
Just my 2 cents
