Necro Encyclopedia-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrAjJ1N6hxs
In your opinion, what are the top 3 classes for a commander?
1) Mesmer
Mesmer is the best zerg vs zerg support class in the game. They have portals to teleport their zergs around. They also have group stealth to hide their units. They also generate clones to absorb damage for their allies. Zergs are much more effective with a good mesmer as their commander. They are also fairly hard to kill, very important as a commander since its never good to lose a commander.
2) Elementalists
Elementalists are the best class for sieges, both offence and defence. They got AoE nukes to terrorize the walls and kill sieges. They got Whirling Winds to protect sieges. They also has the 2nd highest mobility in the game, allowing them to lead a zerg to surprise and overwhelm their enemies. They are also fairly hard to kill, very important as a commander since its never good to lose a commander.
3) Warriors
Warriors are the best class for head on zerg vs zerg action. They can often charge head first into a 10+ men zerg and survive, while their own zerg overwhelm the enemies.
And since they are always at the front line, the zerg will always know where to go. And being the strongest melee unit in the game has a huge psychological effect on the enemy, and a morale boost for his own troops.
#2. It is wrong to hard to include hard to kill and mobile if you have an ele commander. In order for that to occur, they have to be dagger/dagger and a dagger/dagger ele is actually too mobile to be a good commander because mobility is a requirement to stay alive. The last thing you want is a commander that is always running out of the fight and bouncing around. A staff ele running P/V/T gear would work, but they lack survivability still due to lack of mobility while not hitting very hard. Sorry bud, I think you are wrong about this one.
#1. You are also completely wrong about this one. Mesmers can both be portal providers and leaders, if you want them to be effective leaders that is. Mesmers have to leave the zerg, sneak into position, and risk death in order to drop a portal. The last thing you want is a commander that dies trying to get a portal in place (heck the tag itself can make it harder for the mesmer to get into position anyways).
Sounds like you are lacking in some real WvW experience to be honest. Perhaps get out there a little more and see if your perspective changes.
Guardian, Necro, and Warrior would be my choice.
1. Ele – Mobility, speed, heals.. a strong choice. A probably wouldn’t level one though to be a commander since this class is currently being watched by anet
2. Guard- Good support and survivability. Boring to play though
3. Mesmer – So much fun
Right with covenn.
Need toughness and healing for the impact. =).

D/D eles are very good commanders, you are completely wrong on this. I can run around INSIDE enemy zerg for a good 20 seconds without having to congregate with my forces to heal up. But by the time where I have to heal up my units would have pushed through and wiped enemy zerg.
Other good professions for commanders are necros, guardians and warriors.
I don’t lack in real WvW experiences so you can’t pull that card out.
guardian is hands down the best commander, they have the most tank/support and CC, they are able to push into the front lines to allow their army to follow, if the commander is in the far back, people will not push
Guardian is much better then warrior for tanking and CC and support, the warrior is ONLY better at damage.
Tanky anything. The tankier the better.
This is for high pop high tier though. Low pop low tier anything goes and anything can work well with a small scale zerg.
Guardian, Mesmer, Ranger…
Now hear me out on this… there’s about a thousand people who will read what I just wrote and think, “ranger???” wtf is wrong with this guy?!?
But here’s why I say so, they’re always too far away to ever take any damage, and since they can’t dish out any damage, they can spend their time still being useful by leading :p
OK, seriously though, I think it depends on the play style and the zerg on the commanders back. If you’re taking an offensive approach, then you want a front line player like a guardian or warrior. Defensive, probably mesmer or ele. We have a great commander on our server who actually is a ranger. I don’t know if there’s a class that’s better suited to command than any other, but there are definitely people who are better suited than others.
I find guardians or tanky warriors the best. Being able to lead the battle charge and soak damage is a big advantage.
Also, Ele requires a lot of concentration to perform well, which conflicts with needing to read the battlefield to know whether to push, retreat, flank or portal, check the map, etc. The big pro of (staff) Ele as commander IMO is the CC & support at your disposal.
When you lead a zerg, all the classes of the game will be in that zerg. So if at a given time, you need a specific class to do a specific action, you just ask it. So imo, you can play commander as any class / build, really. Just pick one that you enjoy playing.
was bunker warrior for me, who doesn’t want to follow a giant norn hammer warrior into the fray.
Guardian, Necro, and Warrior would be my choice.
This is what I was thinking.
2. Guard- Good support and survivability. Boring to play though
No.
Would much rather follow a tiny asura engineer
Guardian is much better then warrior for tanking and CC and support, the warrior is ONLY better at damage.
I dont know, a couple hammer warriors leading the charge can do nasty things to break up an enemy zerg. Guardian can be better in tight areas with creative use of line of warding to split the enemy but many zergs start to panic when they are geting stuned and knocked around constantly.
IMO Necro is the best. Why? Because I know how cats can hit the fan when the commander goes down. Necros have the best survivability in the game. I said cat because I feel kitten just didn’t cut it.
imo a good commander is not dependent on the profession chosen. but rather his/her grasp of situation & ability to give clear direction while under pressure.
Would much rather follow a tiny asura engineer
I hv followed an engineer commander once (a Charr though), he is good at getting the group to work as a team by encouraging everyone to utilise respective profession skills to achieve main objective.
Your class has nothing to do with how well you do as a commander.
You follow the idiot elementalist if you want….I’ll follow the ranger who knows what he’s doing.
Rangers. Let them feel special. Its like letting the special ed kid play in the game once you are up by 50 just so he can feel good about himself.
Your class has nothing to do with how well you do as a commander.

I think you missed the point entirely.

Theres no point, because there is always a lot of people and you find a lot of classes…so wont matter if its an elem, mesmer or guardian…because in the group there will be plenty…the commander is just an icon, period.
Hence depends in the person

It’s not like your class gives you mystical insight on what to do as commander.
However playing survivable class is pretty key.
My first tag was on my thief and I really regretted it.
Not that thieves arent survivable, but when Im using my tag as a Rally point and im invising and blinking around, can cause confusion with the people not in TS.

There is no point, because the best survivable class still depends in the person and group, and wont have any kind of benefit by having the commander alive while the whole army is laying in the ground, there is absolutely not benefit having the commander alive the whole fight too.
Hence wont matter no matter how hard someone can think of.
This game is just like this.
I feel being survivable matters with the blue dorito on.
Gear and build help with this but as far as classes go, i still feel necro/guardian/warrior are the optimal choices.
There is benefit to having the commander not dead either, especially if your leading people not in TS.

Lol. Then u never had a commander that really guides the fight step by step.

That doesnt even make sense towards to what i typed so…read this carefully (for the next smart person too)
IF the commander was something more than a miserable ICON then it would PROBABLY by a TINY bit matter the class for survivality terms which in fact like it was mentioned wont even have a big impact unless you fight a big bunch of noobs which think D/D elem or a Thief is hard to kill or unkillable or the ultimate powerful class.
ICON ehem..commanders dont give you buffs, dont give you more supply, dont give you more stats, dont give you anything other than a miserable ICON in the map, we arent talking about being coordinated we arent talking about a whole server in a TS3 we arent talking about a big bunch of noobs or a big bunch of pros.
I hope you can capiche
Still think your lost man =D
No one said the commander tag is ANY of those things you mentioned.
The question was “In your opinion, what are the top 3 classes for a commander?”
Not “What buffs or bonus’s does an ICON give you”
Having a commander tag gives ya the blue durito, however you can command without it, in which my previous opinion still stands.
The best class that you can be is guardian or any survivability class. You can’t lead people in battle if you get 2 shot lol

I got to disagree. In the Tet Offensive the Vietcongs failed to take the US embassy because they lost their 2 commanders right at the start. They lost more than just 2 extra guns when they lost their commanders.
I would say survivability, morale boost, enemy psychology and buffs/benefits for allies are very important for a commander.

I agree 100% with this… It’s best to have survivability aka the PVP armor for wvw!

Interesting analogy. At the time the US administration had been arguing that the war was nearly over. What the Tet offensive did was fail militarily, but politically destroyed that administration because it highlighted that the war wasn’t nearly over and put the US into a mindset of simply leaving, which led to the North taking over.
I guess that point feeds into enemy psychology.

Don’t get so defensive just because I mentioned your class. I never said someone is a bad commander just because they choose to play d/d ele while doing so. It just isn’t optimal due to the play style demanded by getting the most out of an ele. I am on you server and quite often in the same BL as CDS you know….
