I haven’t found a clear answer to exactly how gear scales. Supposedly the stats scale up, but do they scale according to the equivilent lvl 80 gear of the same rarity? Or do they scale based on level difference?

1. If I’m level 55, in PvE green/blue finds are better than the yellow lvl 35 gear you can get from crafting or dungeon. But when I go to wvw, does that same yellow gear get the same stats as it would if it was lvl 80? Or does the gear stat just get boosted based on how far my character levels? (as in does that level 35 yellow become level 60 yellow gear equivilent, while level 55 green/blue gear would be level 80 equiv)?

It’s a moot point on my current character because he’s 68 and i bought yellow 65 berserker gear and gems. But in 10 levels when the green/blues are better stats in pve I will do some tests unless someone already has?

It would seem kinda weird if you scaled simply from your lvl, and not your gear as well, since you can enter Wv3 at lvl 1 (or after the intro-quest), and play until lvl 80. Would be weird if your starter gear could carry you easily through the game until lvl 80.

You do get gear from drops, but I noticed from getting level 80 exotic gear your effectiveness goes up a LOT.

IIRC your gear doesn’t scale up, just your base stats are increased.

I believe nacht has the right of it.
Your base stats are upped, but not gear. Which is why upscaled players have this sort of stigma of being really easy to kill. Because for geared 80’s they are.

I believe gear stat do scale up. the problem is most people don’t update their gear while lvling. like a lv 60 still using lv 40 gear and thus, making the scaled stat worse than they intended. However, the stat scaled from the guild buff is pretty insane on a low lvl character. Also, the quality of the gear is also a problem. Most underleveled player are usually using just blue or green item while most lvl 80 is using exotics.

and the simplest way of checking this would just be to purchase a cheap low-lvl item set and equip it for comparison =)

you don’t need to, just create a low lvl alt and unequip all equipment, then re-equip and un-equip 1 single item and noted down the difference. But im not at home so i couldn’t perform the experiment.

ahh, the joys of having a job.. I can also test this when I get home. Can’t wait for the day to be over so I can get home for some more WvW.

Gear definitely does scale. If you keep leveling in WvW without upgrading your gear you will notice your effective states falling, as the scaling is showing that you are undergeared. The gear scales relative to your level, so if you are a level 50 in level 40 gear then when you are scaled to 80 your gear will only be lvl 70 (aprox, to be honest its more likely done on percentages than number of levels, so it could be something more like level 64 gear). If you have level appropriate gear, greens for example, then you could have better stats than someone who is a higher level than you, but only has blues on, but remember, rare and exquisite items are not available at lower levels.

The big difference with high vs low level players is that high levels have access to all of their trait points, which further increase stats over their lower level adversaries

Oh good idea. I did that test on my 15 range. Got a blue power coat for lvl 5 and 11. One is 6 and the other is +9 and I got different amounts when equipped. The armor and weapon damage also scaled up. I equipped a sword with only vit on it and my attack went up by 700 So everything scales up, but running in old gear makes you that much worse and blue/green gear on top of that.

I have a feeling even a level 80 in blue/green gear that is 10 levels too old for him would get destroyed by a lvl 80 in full 80 exotics.

The gear stats itself had the same multiplier to get what I got (gear stat *11.25) – so that seems to be fixed for your level at least, not based on the item level. I tried a green and it had the same multiplier and was level 14 gear so the quality and level of the gear are independent of the multipler applied to it. i.e. the better gear for your level, the better your stats will be – i think once you get 60 and get 3 stats on your gear and jewels, as long as you keep rares on you might be about equiv to an 80 in rares – but still weaker than an 80 in exotics. and you won’t be able to keep them your level.

Stats from gear definitely scale up. For example, a+1% crit dam bonus on my level 30 gear was giving me +4% actual bonus in stats.

However the overall scaling for low level gear doesn’t make it as good as the equivalent gear at higher level (ie, rare level 35 gear isn’t as good as rare level 50 gear). Using rares at level 35 my thief was only getting 1k dam on cluster bombs. At level 50 he was getting almost 2k dam.
