How often do the WvW maps rotate? We just had ours rotate (went from blue to red, and base is in a different borderland). Just wondering how often this happens and what triggers it.

Only happens if your realm’s ranking in your tier changes. Top scorer takes Green, middle takes Blue, bottom takes Red. To see your server’s ranking use this link.

So follow-up question: when do servers rotate in and out/ get rotated around?

That depends on servers’ ratings. Each matchup results in change in rating points, depending on the results of 3 servers during this matchup and their previous ratings.
It might or might not change the colors of the servers – the rating changes are not always big enough to move server up/down in rating.

All this calculations happen once a week, during WvW reset (it’s every Friday, 18 GMT for EU, not sure about US exact time)

So each week there’s a chance based on your ranking that you might either switch map positions, or be against a different server?

Basically yes, but the Glicko rating system that anet is using has become a bit stale after few months, so in some tiers there isn’t much up/down movement.

If you look at the mos site that Xabu linked, it shows the current WvW result and predicted next matchup .

Any idea on the ETA for these changes, and also regarding alternating sides;

Will there be anyway to determine what colour you will be before actually entering a BL once this takes effect? It would make planning what BL your guild is entering impossible beforehand if not.

I think it’s a random matchup colors, instead of currently due to 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Would also be fine – whatever they do – random matchups or weekly 1,23 movements would be an improvement to get away from stale brackets imo
