Asuran Mating Habits
They do it the same way humans do it.
Only major difference is that culturally, the asura do not really have traditional male/female relationships. The asura simply mate with those who have an intellect they find attractive regardless of gender.
At least that’s the gist of it, but I’m going on memory here.
As an asura, I do this all the time.”
Wow. The more you know O_O
regardless of gender.
I don’t think this is correct. Sure there are lesbian/homosexual asura out there, but I don’t think their entire population is bisexual.
Also, (besides intellect) the ears are one of the physical features that make them attractive to other asura.

Some wine, some dinner, a few ear rubs, and then you look into that special person’s eyes and compute the aetheric exponential quotient to the Golem power inverse ratio.
Now for those old enough, imagine putting mathematical equations in that famous “Faking it” scene in When Harry Met Sally.
From what I can tell it’s a lot like our own, though it’s not like i’ve delved deeply into asura sexuality here.
Just at a passing glance it looks roughly the same. Asura finds person, they fall in love, make love, have a kid if applicable, and keep living their lives.
As for the thing about asura being attracted to anyone of any gender, I would imagine that’s a lot like us too. Some are, some arnt. I have not personally seen a gay asura couple (get on that anet), but theres nothing to say if that’s normal, accepted, uncommon, taboo, or even if asuras have multiple partners at one time of both male and female.

I have, however, seen a lesbian asura. She’s somewhere in Rata Sum, complaining that her wife/mate wants her to be home on time for dinner.
Or something like that, I would have to find and see that conversation again.

Eh I can’t even remember my source, so I can’t actually state anything as fact.
But I am pretty certain that at the very least, the asura don’t discriminate about who another asura decides to partner with. They don’t make a big deal over whether a couple is the same or a different sex.
So maybe I kinda twisted that a little bit, but I do swear I remember reading something like that before.

Asura are mammals, so they mate and give birth to live young the same way humans do.
Where they differ from humans is what they deem “attractive” in a mate. They value intelligence above all, so a dumb Asura is likely to remain alone and unloved all throughout their life. Asura who remain in Rata Sum are likely to also value scholarly achievements as a sign of success in their mates, but Asura who have left to pursue other careers in business, war or piracy less so.
Physically, both sexes find good ears to be indicators of sexual attractiveness. Some dialogue from GW1 suggested that female Asura like larger ears on males, although it is not known if male Asura like females with smaller ears. During GW1, female Asura had a tendency to have smaller ears, but in GW2 ear length no longer appears linked to sex.

I think this is a gameplay over lore issue. Because we can create/play asura characters ourselves now.

We have no way of knowing if that is typical or not though.
It’s like a guy saying he like a woman with a big butt. Lots of guys do, that’s his thing. I however disagree, a big butt on a woman is not a turn on for me.

This thread is completely necessary and Ive learned a lot.
What he means (I think) is that instead of things like breasts and butts; ears can be (but not necessarily are) a turn on for Asura.
Basically that, but more so in a general sense of physical attractiveness. It’s like how humans usually look to clean, unblemished skin and symmetrical facial features as indicators of attractiveness and good health; among Asura, ears are regarded as a good indicator of health and sexual fitness.
I do wonder what that means for players who picked the “ragged” ears for their Asura though. XD

I must say i find something more interesting about asura reproduction. The head size of the progeny.
Human birth is painful for the mother because of the head-size of the foetus. The skull is not fully formed yet, and it deforms slightly as it exits the mothers pelvic that is wider than man’s for exactly that reason.
Now, seeing asura females not having any wider hips or pelvics than males, and the size ratio of their heads and hips, i would think asura birth is either extremely painful or has been helped with technological and/or medical methods for quite some time that their evolution adapted to rely on that help.

It is not in Whispers story line. It can be attained by all, by the choice taken when the Pale Tree asks for your greatest fear.
It may be part of your story regardless of race and order previously chosen.
That said… sob it pained me to go through this.
Asura may look to the ears for attractiveness as already mentioned. I also heard another matter of attractiveness is the forehead. Maybe because it indicates a big brain… dunno.

My Asura is short even by Asuran standards but I’m inclined to agree. The Progenies are probably… 7-10? They’d maybe be a third of their current size when born. Chances are before the influx of medical technology Asuran females would die during childbirth.

Being a mammal has precisely nothing to do with giving birth to live young. A mammal is a creature that produces milk from mammary glands (note the common word root).

mam·mal [mam-uhl] Show IPA
noun
any vertebrate of the class Mammalia, having the body more or less covered with hair, nourishing the young with milk from the mammary glands, and, with the exception of the egg-laying monotremes, giving birth to live young.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/mammal?s=t
Here is a post I found about non-mammals who produce milk. Complete with reference links:
You read that right; there are in fact animals that feed their young with bodily secretions that are not mammals. Some folks are real persnickety and won’t call something “milk” unless it came from a mammal, but that’s just prejudice.
For some strange reason, Middle Age scholars believed that the pelican would feed its young with its own blood. I have no idea where they got such a preposterous notion, but then these were the same people who believed that barnacles turn into geese and that the best procedure to cure a sword wound was to boil a complicated potion out of bear-skull scrapings under a full moon and apply said goop to the sword.
But it turns out that some birds do feed their young with their bodies. Pigeons and flamingos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cropmilk)produce a milky substance in their crops, which they regurgitate to their young. It’s somewhat higher in fat and minerals (http://www.springerlink.com/content/w6577vp3980w3442/) than mammalian milk; the minerals in particular being very important to the development of young birds. Many domestic birds develop osteological problems due to lack of minerals, and I suspect that calcium requirements during development are the reason that birds have never evolved live birth._
Somewhat less well known is the fact that emperor penguins (http://www.stanford.edu/group/stanfordbirds/text/essays/BirdMilk.html)also produce milk, although this seems to be a less routine occurrence than in pigeons or flamingos._
But surely this pales compared to the occurrence of milk in tsetse flies (http://aem.asm.org/cgi/content/full/72/11/7013).
“The tsetse fly’s unique viviparous reproductive biology (females use milk gland secretions to nourish three larval instars)”

Giving live birth is completely incidental.
The word “mammal” is modern, from the scientific name Mammalia coined by Carl Linnaeus in 1758, derived from the Latin mamma (“teat, pap”). All female mammals nurse their young with milk, which is secreted from special glands, the mammary glands
Asura have mammary glands too I believe, which were visible back when that nude bug was still around.
That’s great; still doesn’t mean they can’t lay eggs. As someone else has pointed out , based on their head size live birth is completely unrealistic.

Anet confirmed that they give birth in the same way humans do, so that’s a fact.
Also, it’s a fantasy game, realism has no meaning here. :P
In matters of childbirth and early development, little is known outside of the knowledge that asura give live birth in the same manner as humans. According to an asura named Budge, a child’s first words can come as soon as the day after their birth (assuming that “Marnminum Numorocarb” actually means something; with the asura, it’s hard to tell).

My point was it is wrong to say that being a mammal has precisely nothing to do with giving birth to live young. "Mammal is an archaic clasificiation that is based on general rules and outdated understanding of how animals formed. There are overlaps within many different classifications and the definition of mammal has always included the general rule of live birth.
edit: On topic: Head size can be solved in a few different ways.
-Asura could release hormones during birth that make their cartilage more elastic than we see happen in humanity.
-Asura are born proportionally smaller than human progeny.
-Asura newborn brains and skull are more physically malleable so they could be safely birthed.
-Any combination of the above possibilities.

@Dustfinger: Back during Wintersday 2012, an Asura mother does mention “the pain of childbirth”, so it’s likely that it’s options 1 and 3, in a manner similar to humans.
Personally, I think it would have been cooler if Asura were like marsupials; they give birth to live young at a very early stage in their development. The progeny then migrate to their mother’s pouch and then remain there until they are more fully developed.
