They look cute and have hilarious (and incredibly well made) animations compared to the other classes, all of which contrasts wonderfully with their massive egos, immense capability, high technology and the fact none of the races can take them seriously due to their stature while their faction brings a much needed breath of technology to the setting (Why do worlds where magic exist never utilise magic with science?)

They are bit of a comic foil in the game so I get why some people hate on them (This game isn’t dark and edgy enough with Asura in it!)

After the beta’s I really fell in love with the Charr. However I rolled an Asura and I can not imagine going back to any other race. I do have an Charr warrior and tried all the possible combination of classes and races that are possible. Every time I get them up to lvl 10 -15, I start to feel that something is missing and that is being a tiny little Asura in a big world.

It is not only that I find them beyond funny or cute, I just feel that they are faster and since they are so tiny, for me all the big battles take on another dimension of being massive since you are so little.

Asura for the win!

Because the concept fit. I had an old D&D Character who was a Goblin Shaman who built Undead Constructs (Bone and Flesh Golems mostly, because she enjoyed seeing enemies waste spells on them thinking they were regular reanimated Skeletons and Zombies) and used summoned Ghosts to run a very efficient spy-for-hire operation. She was vain, arrogant, and had a maxed-out Intelligence score balanced by a very poor Wisdom score. The Asura mix of genius and poor foresight/impulse control was ideal for remaking her.

Also, the animations are great. That close to the ground, I feel like I have super speed all the time compared to my huge lumbering Charr and Norns. And watching her dodge and flip is fantastic!

ANet was very meticulous in how they designed they races. Each race is tailored to appeal to a certain demographic.

You can tell a lot from a person’s race-choices.

Humans are very plain, nothing particularly exciting about their culture = Player is looking for a sense of familiarity. Nothing radical, just good old human fun.
Example: You choose between parents, sister, or circus for a personal story. All very normal plots, with the circus being slightly different for more excitable humans.
Example2: The human area is extremely plain. Set in early summer made up of mostly prairie and fields, it feels very mundane for your average GW2 player.

Sylvari are quite literally plant people, while also being very sophisticated in the general sense = Player is looking for a very worldly and down to earth personality. They want to feel closer to game’s world.
Example: In your Sylvari char.creation, you pick between great challenges between the stag, green knight, or moon.

Charr are cogs in a machine, soldiers marching toward a unified goal, but also a highly aggressive and feral race = Player is looking for a sense of discipline, conformity, and power.
Example: In Charr char.creation, you decide on what sort of father you had, which directly relates to how your character feels about his/her own responsibilities for his rep.

Norn are big spiritual beings who all seek fame = Player is looking for a way to stand out or to experience a sense of wilderness and the instinct to survive.
Example: Norns reside in a wintery area, that seems very inhospitable.

Asura are brilliant and, mostly, very emotive characters = Player is looking for the taste of discovery, to take “fantasy” to its outer most limits, and revel in the grandeur of superior intelligence and achievement.
Example: For your personal story, you pick an invention, between a butler golem, weather-machine, and fortune-telling ball. All made to sound very quirky yet intriguing.

“Bleeding, Poison, Confusion, Torment, they all look delightful on you.”

Playing as an asura thief with signet of shadows you’re zooming along like a bolt of lightning – after playing that for so long when I try to roll a big character they seem so slow (especially in the norn starting area where everything is built bigger) that I just can’t play another race.

Mainly because of the Asura movement animations, emotes (cheer, laugh esp.) and voice are really good (the female voice anyway) and I like how the ears rise up in combat too. Its overall movement style comes across as sort of ‘wobbly’ compared the more composed Sylvari or humans (nice.)

But in general I like playing the smallest race possible in whatever game I play.

Before I had the game, I saw a promotional video about it. In this video I saw four or five figures standing next to each other, ready for action. One of these figures was a small, strange creature… Upon seeing it, I instantly decided to buy the game. My question is, why would you NOT play Asura? They are so unique. They are mentally superior to all the other races. It’s them who built waypoints and gates. They have an attitude which makes up for their lack of size. They fight in words, when they get the chance, just to one-up each other. I am reminded of a motor boat when I see mine swim across the water’s surface. They make the already large world seem even larger.
So I say again… Why not play one?

I have 3 humans, 1 sylvari, and 1 char. I’ve never considered playing an asura before.

Why do you play as an Asura? What’s your favorite part?

Because, honestly, I feel like the European middle ages and Renaissance are over-done. Humans = European renaissance = snore. Norn = European dark ages = even bigger snore. Sylvari = biotech, which is cool, but spoiled by the entire Camelot play-acting attitude and culture and costuming. I considered Charr, even though steampunk is getting a little tired, but the awful, awful “galumph” running animation ruins the characters for me.

Rata Sum is beautiful. It’s like a cleaned-up, utopian version of Los Angeles from Blade Runner. It’s like a cyberpunk upgrade of Brasilia. Because the idea of a civilization that went straight from the Renaissance to the Internet age, by using magic instead of petrochemicals, is awesome.

Two Peacebringers chatting next to the Accountancy department: “What do we do in the case of a golem uprising?” “Impossible. The Sedition Inhibitors prevent any such thing from happening.” “But if, theoretically, someone managed to bypass the Sedition Inhibitors?” “Then we’d die, or bow down to our new golem overlords.” Meanwhile, two older researchers standing in one of the colleges, one floor up, I forget which one: “Remember the golem uprising a couple of years ago?” “How could I forget? I spent three whole days tied to a sign post by my ears.” “Oh, right. You should have known better than to ask one for directions. They hate that.”

And, frankly, many of the combat animations are awesome, especially all of the single-sword animations. Any single-sword wielding Asura looks remarkably like a young Yoda. And the leaping animations! Norn take large steps. Charr hop. Humans and sylvari jump. Asura cast themselves bodily into the abyss.

They’re also the only race to completely avoid the cheesecake pin-up female light armors – a female Asura is the only female cloth-armor wearer doesn’t start out as a panchiro model. In fact, all of the armors look better on Asura, I think. The glyphic weapons are pretty cool, too, very sci-fi, almost as nice as the Charr’s steampunk weapons. And those lovely Engineer goggles? Look vaguely wrong on anyone but an Asura, I think.

I didn’t expect to, but I ended up rerolling all of my characters as Asura.

I love my Asura. I have eight characters, three of them are Asura (the others being two humans and then one of each).

I love the humor in their personalities and stories, I love the sci-fi bent to them in a fantasy world, I love their awesome and unique animations, and I love how much faster they seem (which is an illusion since every race has the same speed, but this means that the shorter their legs, the more strides per second, so they feel about ten times as fast as a Charr even moving at the same speed).

Really there’s no good reason not to play as an Asura as often as possible, I only have non-Asura characters to get access to the other storylines.

Truth is I wouldn’t go asuran on a new character. I started with an Asuran Guardian. My feel is that Human, Char and Norn got good treatment with content, area and quest wise, whilst Asurans and Syvari did not. I went Sylvari on my Ele and found myself jumping to Divinitys, Hoelbrak and Black Citadel to do more enjoyable content in early and mid levels.

Just compare a few major events like dragons. Human get Teq, Norn get Claw of Jormag and Char get the shaterer. Asuran and Sylvari get none.

I suffer the same issues at this guy.
I wanted a big character so ran a Charr Warrior to 80. I then started an asuran guardian but deleted him at 20 due to weapon size issues. I then rerolled a human. He then got wiped and I went back to asura. I then rolled a human and leveled him to 60. Eventually I deleted the human and went back to asura. I love the asura. They have the best animations in the game. It’s so much of an issue now that 7 out of 8 char slots are asura. Never know, that charr might be deleted to be rerolled as a warrior one day

I never planned to play the race. I hated them in GW1 and was set on never touching them. Sadly, they are epic

I just with weapon sizes we not an issue.
