This is a bit nit picky but has anyone noticed that the human males running animation is a bit unnatural? Also the way the male runs (his legs and feet) also seem a little off as compared to say, the Sylvari run animation. The sylvari male seems to have a more natural run animation (it doesn’t matter that they are so attuned with nature, this is about running in general) than the human male. Human males also seem to glide more across the ground, rather than looking like the weight of gravity affects them bringing each step back to earth, it seems as if they strictly move horizontally across the floor. It’s not so bad when they are carrying a weapon in their hands but when the weapons aren’t drawn it doesn’t sit right.

I understand the strive to make each race different, but the way the human males run just doesn’t feel natural

I actually agree, this is something that hit me after creating a character with all races. Human males just seem kind of goofy and unnatural when they run (with 1 hand weapons, i found them more bearable when wielding a 2 handed weapon instead)

Same! At first I did think the human male animation was a little odd, but I chalk that up to the fact that I’m not used to “driving” a male character. It does seem very smooth and gliding, but it is ok I think once I got used to it.

My Sylvari, though, has a funny looking run animation. In an, “aww, you’re such a cute little dork” sort of way. Human males look a lot more . . . graceful, I guess?

As for running with weapons out, well, yes they look odd, but so do the females IMHO. I probably had “put weapon away” on a key bind within my first 5 minutes of playing. xD

Edit: The “language” filter in this forum is very strange.

If you toggle the human clothing instead of the armor in the Hero tab, and run around you will see how they run without any distraction from the armor or weaponry. It makes it blantantly obvious how weird the run is. They run bent at the waist an unusual amount as if they are trying to run sticking their butt out behind them. If they bring the hips forward a little, have them stand up a little taller, and focus a little more on the back end of the stride (after the feet hit the ground) they can fix it.

Sylvari run straight up, a natural position for jogging. they also even got down the toe to heel technique for running form on the sylvari. Granted the arm swing can be a tiny bit better, but overall sylvari male running is much more natural than the human male running.

I’m glad other people agree. Ever since the first CBT the human animations have irked me. They’re really poor in my opinion. After I hit 80 on my human thief, I made an Asuran mesmer. I love their animations, but once I got to level 50ish, I just couldn’t stand being so tiny. Pity, as it’s actually ENJOYABLE to move around with them. As stated above, the Sylvari have a strong, athletic stride compared to humans. Their idle pose is also a lot “manlier” as well. Human males are goofy in practically everything they do, it’s as if they spent zero time working on them. It really detracts from my experience, but I imagine it doesn’t upset most people. I’m a bit picky with those sort of things.

I also wish you could choose different movement animations like you can in Aion, that would be fantastic. For example: In Aion you can buy a Ninja-esque animation pack that alters your running, jumping, idle animation (and a few others I believe) to that of a ninja. There are a couple other styles as well and you can mix and match (say you want the ninja jump, but another running animation) and would add a lot the personalization of your character AND profession.

Aren’t you exaggerating?

I for one love the feel of the humans. Also the male (which is my main) . The unrealistic nature of them compliments the unrealistic art just fine. I like the feedback of them, and their pace. Norn are to slow, Asura are too speedy, and Sylvari.. They are fine, but I prefer the feel of the humans.

Their running is grounded on the world. I havent spent much time running around without a weapon, but with longbow and greatsword which I use with mine, it looks fantastic.

I Dont know what you mean by Sylvari flapping their legs all over the place, but if you have spent any extensive time running, jogging, or watching people in general run, you would see that sylvari have a more natural run. Their legs don’t flap anywhere, they move as legs should on a speed jog. They have the form of world class distance runners, like the man who won the boston marathon and shattered the record (even though they didn’t count it because that marathon has a more downward slope than what they say is acceptable for a marathon record count) a year or 2 ago.

Humans, when they run without their weapon drawn (because when they run with it drawn, its less noticable) do not run at all naturally. It looks painful actually, Like they are trying to run in a way they shouldnt be. >.<

I agree on the human male run looking weird. As if they are constantly struggling against a big gale or some such. Right now I am debating to restart my engineer as asura instead, also because the big engineer backpacks kinda destroy the good looking armours, which bothers me a lot less on an asura.

But it is really mainly the running animation which seriously makes me re-think my race choice.

Actually the human male’s have a pretty good run animation compared to the rest of the races. I’m a runner myself and I can say that Human males are the only race/gender that have good running form. They lean over in the front which increases speed and they bend their knees appropriately to help run for longer distances. Compare it to something like the Sylvari females who cross their arms (which greatly decreases speed) and flail their limbs about like a newborn. The only thing I don’t like about the Human male running animation is how tight they keep their arms/elbows. It looks very uncomfortable and I always want my character to relax his arms like the Sylvari male does.

Sylvari running is awesome while the human feels very awkward and looks like she stumbles through her steps
it’s cool that each race has it’s own animations but when one is superior to the other why not just copy-paste it to humans since the body type is pretty much the same….

Indeed. It’s driving me crazy when playing my engineer and is one of the main reasons (together with the lackluster customization options) why I didn’t pick a male as my main character, like in GW1. It feels like I’m steering a go-kart.

Whuuuuutt?

Female Sylvari’s have excellent running form in their legs and torso. The arms are a bit off I’ll grant you that, but that natural stride and high kick is beautiful. Human males have a much smaller stride comparatively, almost no kick, and an odd rocking motion.

I’m a runner too, sir, and I say the Sylvari female stride is much better. I challenge you to a run-off!! My lithe Sylvari gazelle vs your clodhopper man!!

Oh lol, after reading this I’m now going to take too much notice of how my human character runs.

I really haven’t taken notice of how my human runs.
