Hey everyone.

Not too long ago I went to check out my email and noticed that I had 4 emails from yahoo support, one of them said that someone tried to log into my email account from America at 11:22pm on an unregistered device (whilst I’m in Australia). After going through all the security options and making sure my email account is safe I decided to log into gw2, however I now apparently have a mobile authenticator set up with my gw2 account.

So after trying various methods to get on including resetting my account and changing the password multiple times. After that I decided to log into this account which I bought at the sale a couple of weeks back, I went into guild chat and noticed that my main account had previously been on around 3 hours ago, however it said that I had logged off on my ele but in reality I logged off on my engi and I wasn’t even home 3 hours ago. So I’m not really sure what to do now, my main account is ThePimpinPig.4283 and I can prove that it is my account (I can list characters, what PvP rank I am, what weapons I have unlocked, my wvw rank and the stuff in my bank)

Thanks in advanced and I really hope this can get sorted out

P.S I never use the same passwords twice :P

It sounds as though your other account has been compromised. After securing your computer, you should contact CS and request assistance in regaining control of your account.

It’s actually not hard to get into someone else’s Yahoo e-mail account. With basic information on a friend, I was able to gain access to his account, thus making me glad I have G-mail.

Frankly, no web based email is very safe just because it CAN be entered from nearly every electronic device on the planet.

This sounds like a hackers confession to me.

ArenaNet, could you please check out this account, that it has not been involved in recent hackings of this game.

Thank you.

Google Chrome and IE have problems with security right now so people don’t have to be logging into suspect sites to be compromised. It is a false sense of security to think that you are not at risk. We are all at risk with the hackers now. People should opt for as much security as they can on their email and everything else.

(My work just told us to not use IE at all until they tell us we can again).

It’s a kitten conspiracy. Kittens gonna be kittens. All is vain!

There are two type of players of this game: occasional and passionate.
The occasional players are those “jumping” from MMO to MMO becasue they can’t get attached to one game.
The passionate players are those who get very attached to their account. They like to design their characters into unique ways, they like to have the coolest gears etc. I don’t call them hard-core players because they don’t need to have the best gear but they can have something special that keep them happy.

A hacker can cause material loses and also psychological stress to the payers.
For the occasional player, this psychological effect is almost nonexistent because he/she has probably already “jumped” to another MMO, while the psychological impact on the passionate player is huge.
To this, A-net adds more levels of stress with their 2 policies:
1) the player own security is to blame
2) there is only one roll back for the lifetime of account

So, a passionate player will get in shock the first time when he gets hacked and then lives with the stress of “what is if his/her account will get hacked again” forever.
The only reasonable solution to get out of this stress is to look for another game or become less passionate about this one. less passioate meas less money or even none spent into the game anymore.

Buying the game is like having a warranty of one roll back. What is you guys would add a recurrent warranty for every 50 dollars spent in the game through the cash shop?
This will assure players that if they spend more money in the game they will have their roll backs assured and let one part of the stress away.

Many retailers sell things with a warranty of 1-3 years but they can add extra years if you pay more. Why not add this system to the game too, especially that it is a virtual product and not a physical one so the lack of replacement parts or full products is not the case?

We’ll do our very best to resolve this for you and I hope you’re soon back in the game with little to no ill effects of the hacker’s deeds!

I think if we were to add the “insurance policy” you describe, some players would be concerned that we’d entered Animal Farm, where “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.” Our objective is to give every player Triple-A service.

Those who invest more in the game — in an emotional or financial sense — do have a greater loss if their security is compromised. But I’m not sure that offering additional services per $50 spent is the answer.

I’ll say it again: This is not an issue over which we have control, but we’ll do our best to help resolve the situation, including assistance with some security advice and an account restoration. I’ll continue discussing with the team how we can improve those practices, always with the best interests of our players at the forefront of our minds!
