Hi, I’ve got a friend who wants to get in on the game, and I want to know what happens with the region lock thing. We are in Argentina which appears to be in the “Other” category. I heard we can buy either European or NA version and there won’t be any difference or problems since we’re not in either. Is this true?
I’ve purchased the NA version and everything is ok but the store is out of copies. We found a another one with EU versions so that’s why we need to know.

I honestly don’t have the full answer to this but from my understanding is that the game is not region locked. Much rather, you pick a server when you first start playing at which some of them are designed for certain regions. However, that’s how I see it, correct me if I am wrong.

the game may not be region locked but any store purchases are, You have to purchase at your home regions prices/currency.

Yeah but that’s a problem for the stores to handle. What I mean is, I’ve heard US and EU residents can’t log in from one another.
So it would like this:
You are on the NA region, you can’t log in with a EU key.
You are on EU region, you can’t log in with NA key.
You are on the “other” region, you can log in with any version.
And once you log in, you can get on any server, be it NA or EU. At least that’s what I’ve heard but I’d really like some sort of oficial confirmation to make sure we don’t spend our money and then get a key we can’t use.
Does anyone know if this is explained anywhere officially?

Reading back and forth from the support page, your friend should be in the clear with the EU serial code. Since he is in Argentina, he’ll be accessing the NA datacenter. Here’s the support topic that I’m reading off of:
http://en.support.guildwars2.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9184/kw/region
Though if this method is available for him, he can buy a digital copy from buy.guildwars2.com as it will give him the correct version.

Edit-they changed the guide, apparently being an Argie you will default to the US datacentre, but will still be free to roam Europe worlds.
The stores are set to what country you set your account too, for instance my details say UK so I have to pay with UK currency and UK rates, Russians get US rates and use US dollars, if you are in the EU apart from Ireland you pay Euro rates, its a really unfair system the guy standing next to me using the store could be buying stuff for 1/3 less.

Yes but ANet has disabled digital sales for now, and Green Man Gaming (which is where I bought it) is out of copies. That’s how we ended up finding the EU store.

We don’t have a problem with US datacentre (and we’re also playing on US servers). What’s confusing is that we’re not buying the US version, it’s the EU version. I just wanted to make sure if that means he’ll get into the EU datacenter because of Key, or to the US datacenter because of IP. It should be US, right? Even if he buys the EU key, it SHOULD make no difference… right?
Basically, according to the gide, it says
“Other: Players in countries not listed above will connect to the North American datacenter.”
So it would seem to be by IP, and therefore should not matter what key you buy, just where you are. In which case we should be in the clear and be able to buy any one of them. It’s a bit ambigous, that’s why I wanted to make sure before we buy a brick :p
It’d be nice to get an official response into this issue.

Have you or your friend send a support ticket about this? If not, one of you can try to take a bite at it to see what the staff would say about it.

The game is region locked for account creation. You have to create your account and have your inital login from the correct region. i.e. eu game in the eu, and us game in the us. After the initial account creation however you can log in from anywhere in the world. So, unfortunately your EU copy will not be useable unless you also create your account in the EU zone and have it validated there. You can not validate an EU copy in the US.
It’s in the support FAQ. Search is your friend.

Yes but we are not in the US. We’re in Argentina which is in the “third” region, called simply “Other”. There are no “Other” versions of the game, just US and EU and SUPPOSEDLY for us it makes no diference what we purchase. And that’s what i need confirmation of.
I’ve sent the Ticket but they are yet to respond.
