“it doesn’t make you spend hours preparing to have fun, rather than having fun”
Guild missions say otherwise.
Oh no, that’s not what I’m saying. They need to make a GW2 account before the name reservations are cancelled.
What? So if John Doe from GW1 never makes a GW2 account, John Doe will be reserved indefinitely? This is not what was promised via Arenanet’s blog post about freeing up names that have not been taken.

no , what he said was that Jhon Doe needs to make a character in GW2 with that name before AN releases those names for all GW2 players or lose the chance to use that reserved name.

Which means, if John Doe NEVER PLAYS GW2. NO-ONE can ever use John Doe for a name? It will NEVER be released? Which is NOT what was promised.
That makes no sense at all.
I think we’re mistaken in that
You’re misinterpreting what was said.
“They need to make a GW2 account before the name reservations are cancelled.”
That means John Doe has to make a GW2 account prior to names being released in order to claim his reserved name. Once names are released, it’s possible for someone else to take that name before him.
Does that clear it up?
On another note, I really appreciate your replies Gaile. Hopefully you all can get everything sorted out and release the names soon…
Also waiting on a name. To add to the “good points” with what I hope is another, I’m sure a lot of us would be happy to make a character with an original name once we know for a fact the name we really want has been reserved or taken for good, at which point we sigh and use something else. Having to constantly check whether the name is available or not with no ETA is a very un-fun tease. :p “Yes” or “no” is better than “maybe; keep checking”.
Yeah, this is getting pretty ridiculous. We’re almost one month from launch. Perhaps they should have stated, “Names from active Guild Wars 1 accounts will be reserved indefinitely despite GW2 being a separate game.” It’s ironic because they pitched GW2 as being a new game wholly distinct from GW1.
@Slurry
Look, either way, the names should have been released already, or soon to be, as said in the blog post. If they are changing their tune now in saying that reserved names will never be released, I’d be very upset, more so than ANY OTHER CHANGES they have made so far.
Dude, I’m not angry. Definitely not at you either, you’ve been a great help. Gaile’s replies are ambiguous to say the least; they also indicate they have put no thought into the releasing the names at all, which concerns me. These ‘hints’ you refer to are not helping anyone, if anything, they add greater confusion to the community, this whole topic is testament to that.
Call me pedantic, paranoid, or whatever, but if Arenanet doesn’t have a definitive stance on releasing the names, then I will continue to see it as an issue. Assumptions deriving from their ‘hints’ are just troublesome.
Hmm, N.B. seems like if no one has posted yet for the second page of a topic, you can’t see the first page at all. So this post is to alleviate this problem.
I just want to point out something. If the name isn’t available, it’s because someone used it in Guild Wars within the last 8 months, maybe is using it still. So I’m sort of not seeing why you’d be so eager to nab someone else’s name. Why not come up with something else? I mean, after all, as we say, “This is my story.”
Eager to nab someone else’s name? It’s not their name if it’s not in use in GW2. So I’d like to start “my” story but unfortunately you folks are clinging to the past, preventing me from using a name that should be fair game. After all, this is GW2 not GW1.

Well, I’m glad to hear that. Your prior post seemed a little emotionally-charged, so sorry if I came off as rude.
Really, the best thing right now it to just…wait. We can’t speed up the releasing of names—that’s been made rather apparent by Anet’s lack of a “definitive stance” as you put it. And from the sounds of it, we’ll be well notified when they plan on releasing names, so it won’t just be something completely under the radar I don’t think. For now it’s just the waiting game.
I’ve just been playing other games to pass the time while waiting on names…GW2 isn’t going anywhere any time soon as far as I can tell.
Example what is happen now:
a)guy played gw1 reserved his nick and dosent use it yet.
b)guy who bought gw2 cant use this nick beacuse its reserved.
“All pepole have Special Nicks for them and want use it now to make a new story.”
So why we need kept waiting and SPAM makes a new character to check us nick is reserved or maybe not? Time is up for reserved nickname its my idea and alot of ppl here too. “I dont wanna felt bad beacuse i didnt play GW1” I understand 10-20 days reserved nick but they dont use it YET. Please for fast response A-Net.
At least we’ve had some replies, thanks Gaile, but I guess it’s back to waiting for me….
I would just like to add my voice to the mix; I’ve also been waiting on my own GW1-second account names to use in GW2.
I think we’re all willing to take our lumps and use names which are not our first choice… but only if we’re sure we’ll never ever get the names we really want.
Thanks!

To be fair, I’d like to clarify that you did not have to specifically reserve a name. If you bought a GW2 account and linked it to a GW1 account, then ALL the GW1 names are reserved.
I had something like 15 characters across 2 GW1 accounts. No way I’m using all those names in GW2… so theoretically someone could be waiting on a name I will never use. :/
I also had 8 Characters in GW 1 and I’m not using even 1 of the names…with some i use the same second name so others are free to take them.
I think the time should be soon to release them seeing as the game slowly starts looking good. Less updates aswell.
bump because this is just becoming uncalled for by now
Wow I am very surprised all those names are still reserved. I went to make an alt today and had a heck of a time coming up with a name for her. Several of the ones I tried (that I thought were even unique) were “reserved” names.
updates and hotfixes ever where, and not any information of when we can use our reserved names.
Seriously, its been long enough. If you have not picked up your reserved name by now, you are unlikely to miss it.
Please at least let us know WHEN you plan to do this!
Thanks!
We do not have a timeframe for this. We do understand that for some people, this is a significant question, but we’d also appreciate if these posts don’t arise every day, when a simple check through the Search Engine will show that … we do not have a timeframe for this.
When we do have a timeframe, we’ll be sure to update this thread and note it!
