Character name reservation
I guess this would be my ticket number? [Incident:120904-002142]
I didn’t get an email back after replying with, none of these of the above information answered my question.
I’ve only gotten this one automated email. When will I ever get in contact with an actual person, who could help me? At least a response.

Yes, Cord, you definitely will hear from someone. But right now, we’re trying very hard to work on game issues of a major scale: people who can’t get into the game, players who were hacked.
I appreciate that you’re fond of your character names and wish to retain them. Please bear with us and know the team will help you as soon as they are able to do so.

This is just getting a little ridiculous over an easy fix such as an already linked and working account.
I didn’t really know where to put this, so if it’s not this subforum, please move, but here is my question:
Why GW1 nicknames are still not released?
I’m trying to make a character right now and I’m getting this message “The name you entered is a reserved Guild Wars character name”
According to wiki and this blogpost: http://www.arena.net/blog/reserve-your-guild-wars-character-name-for-guild-wars-2-by-july-31 , players who didn’t create characters with GW1 nicknames during headstart and launch day, lose rights to those names.
So what’s up with that?
“Shortly after launch, we’ll free up all the unclaimed names for new Guild Wars 2 players to use.” Maybe they have a different definition of short than we do…
Don’t chase shadows, cuz you just might find whats in ’em – Cpl Braunsberg
The quote above is accurate. We did not specify “headstart or launch day” and in the overall scope of things, it’s still early days. You’re welcome to continue to try for the name, but I cannot say for certain when it would become available.

Does anyone know if deleting a gw2 character with a reserved gw1 name will free up that name after the 24 hour reservation for free names? or will it still be reserved until gw1 reserved names are available?
I am waiting on a name linked to a friends account which they are not going to use, so I would be able to get a character made and deleted with the name I am interested in.
What do you mean it didn’t specify… It says names have to be used during headstart or launch day.
We did not specify “headstart or launch day”
http://www.arena.net/blog/reserving-your-character-name-for-guild-wars-2
[…] and you must create a Guild Wars 2 character with the same name as your Guild Wars character during the Headstart Access period or on launch day.
After launch day (and after we work through support tickets filed on launch day), we’ll free up the millions of unclaimed names […]
I think that’s the reason why everybody thinks it should have long ended – or is there still support tickets on that?
^^^^^ This
Maybe my english isn’t so good, but this looks an aweful lot like a somewhat soft deadline for reserved names. I have no problem with people who reserved names getting dibs. but there are a bunch of people waiting to sink their teeth into the perfect name for their next alt. I myself have a thief lined up that I have been dying to play with the perfect name that is still listed as reserved, and names are very important for me. Time’s up imo, paying customers should be allowed to get access to these rather than having to wait for an unspecified time for the name to come available. I understand ANET has their hands full with other important problems, I don’t think this is too much to ask as a player. Please give us an actual timeline for these names to be released rather than cryptic and/or inaccurate responses, please and thanks

You’re right. There are two statements there, and I think that answers the question. Thanks for the help.

So would it be possible for you to give us a rough time frame of when these names will become available?
Would like to know this as well; I keep checking a name and it keeps giving me the “reserved GW1 name” message, which I assume means the character hasn’t been made yet. Looking forward to snagging it if the game would just let me. Rough ETA? A week? A month?
This is really messed up because i had a name reserved via a bro’s account for my Engineer. I really want that name so i waited a few days after release and kept trying to make the charakter. Last week i sent a support ticket and apparently, it’s still reserved for that account only.
He even deleted that charakter but it didn’t matter. The name is in the database and i can’t do anything about it. Luckily i’m enjoying my main enough but i hope they release the names soon because it takes way too long.
Gandara – WvW Warrior
I also am wishing that name reservations had been undone immediately after launch day. I spent TWO weeks holding off my main character because of a name I wanted, and eventually just gave in and made a much less satisfactory name that, until a name changing service is eventually added (if ever), I’ll have to constantly look at my character’s name with annoyance at the memory of simply not being able to name him properly.
You know what they say about the leading man? He never dies.
Glad to see that we finally get a staff response.
To echo what’s already been said plenty of times in this thread: can we get a rough estimate of when names will be opened? A week? Month? End of the year?
At the moment I’m not even playing the game really as I’m waiting on a name (two, actually)…so any kind of time estimate would be greatly appreciated.
I have my name reserved for my brother’s account too, it’s important to me, people remember me for that name, and there are people who miss me :p.
I would like to know how long can we expect the names to be reserved, I’m looking forward to play the character I always wanted.
/agreed
Or at least tell us if you announce it so we can prepare ourselves for another name-grabbing day. Would be a pity to come home from work and after weeks of daily checking read “in use”
Bunch of people waiting on names. An update on when they’ll be unlocked would be great.

This thread interests me. 3 week back-up on freeing up names? Are there really “millions” of names to free up? :|
Still waiting… and getting more annoyed = \
Is there any hope of us getting even a rough estimate on when these ‘reserved’ names will become available for players? Or, if you can’t figure that out, perhaps when a name changing system would be implemented? Because I’ll make my character up with a not-what-I-wanted-name if there’s a hope I’ll get the one I’m after later on…
up +1
same situation here :<
Same here, waiting for 4 names >.<
Tried customer service twice and below are the responses I got.
Doesn’t seem we’ll be getting the name changing option or cancel reservations any time soon.
1st time:
Thank you for contacting the Guild Wars 2 Support Team! We would like to apologize for the time it has taken to get to your issue. We are experiencing a high influx of tickets regarding character names and wanted to cover the more common ones.
CHARACTER/GUILD/DISPLAY NAME CHANGE
If your character, guild, or display name is less than what you were looking for and do not wish to restart in order to acquire a new name we are unable to offer this service at this time. We understand just how frustrating having a name other than the one you were after can be and ask that you remain patient until we are able to provide such service.
If you would like to make it known that you definitely want this service to be available, the best way to have your feedback or suggestions for Guild Wars 2 reach someone in development is to post it in a public forum like the Official Forums, Twitter, Facebook, or on a Fan Site. The more people who view and comment on it, the more likely developers will take notice.
CHARACTER NAME VIOLATION REPORTS
If you were reporting a character name for violation of our Naming Policy (https://www.guildwars2.com/en/legal/guild-wars-2-naming-policy/) please use the in game function to do so in the future.
this is done by right clicking on the person’s name in chate and selecting “Report” and then chosing “Bad Name”. These reports are monitored at all times and will be addressed faster than reporting them via the ticketing system.
If your issue was not addressed by this response we apologize for the frustration. Please close out this ticket and open a new one with a more detailed subject line so it is not pulled for responses in the future.
2nd time:
We have not announced when we will be making reserved Guild Wars character names available for use. Please keep an eye on the website (https://www.guildwars2.com/en/) for updates.
Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.
Regards,
that could mean they announce it soon or we keep checking everyday for months
so basically we know nothing. :/
I wish they would really do this ASAP…Been waiting for 2 weeks for a name.
Lately my gameplay has gone like this: Log in, try to create character with name I want, name is still reserved, log out.
^ same; I’ve been loath to make an Engineer because the name I want for him isn’t available yet :/
I believe Tom Petty said it best, waiting is the hardest part
I believe Tom Petty said it best, waiting is the hardest part
For me the hardest part is wondering if someone will take the names I wanted from my other non-linked accounts before I have a chance to use them. Not fun getting on every morning and every evening, going through the whole character creation process only to find the name is still reserved.
The juice is surely not worth the squeeze, but it would be nice if the name (which is the only restrictive part of character creation) was the first thing you did when creating a character. How frustrating to get all the way to the end and find the name is taken or reserved. How much easier and less frustrating if that was the FIRST decision you make in character creation.

Almost a month now and I’m no where different from when I started with my problem. I’ve waited my turn, this is the longest I’ve had to wait for any issue involving an online game. Not to mention the problem is on their end.
So the f2p model will come to mean “poor customer support”…awesome
pretty much from what I’ve experienced
This is rather ridiculous really…Tuesday will be a month from launch and names are still reserved, and there is no ETA from Anet on when they will finally free up the names.
I’m doing the same exact thing as XYZ—log in, name is still reserved, close game, go play something else.
I don’t understand why you let people reserve names and not make it at all available on release, or even a month after.
+1 Cord, same situation, and no ETA from Anet as to when it’ll get fixed.
The thing I don’t get is why names even have to be unique given that we all have unique account names (XXX.####). Diablo III did it right when they made everything go by the account name, and when I saw ANet doing that, I figured that’s how it would be.
To be fair I’m guessing they haven’t released the names yet is because those who have been hacked would lose their chance of getting their reserved names. But perhaps a way for the accounts with reservations to free them would be nice.
Yeah, I too would love to get some kind of response from ArenaNet on how much longer we will have to wait.
And if this goes on for much longer, then I would also like to see a way to free up the reservations from individual accounts. I’m still waiting for 2 names from my wife’s GW1 account to become available. She even created a support ticket to ask ArenaNet to delete all the name reservations associated with her account from their database, but apparently, their database doesn’t have that kind of ‘delete’ functionality (frown).
Just tried, confirmed not available yet. Maybe tomorrow
I just want to point out something. If the name isn’t available, it’s because someone used it in Guild Wars within the last 8 months, maybe is using it still. So I’m sort of not seeing why you’d be so eager to nab someone else’s name. Why not come up with something else? I mean, after all, as we say, “This is my story.”

There are many ’someone’s who aren’t even playing Guild Wars 2. And that blog post did say after launch day. The blog post implied Arenanet is expecting there to be untaken reserved names. And that they will be freed up.
An estimate time would really be appreciated.
“it doesn’t make you spend hours preparing to have fun, rather than having fun”
Guild missions say otherwise.

so are you saying that if that person who is using a name in “Guild Wars 1” and is still playing using that name in “Guild Wars 1” that the name will never be free for “Guild Wars 2” use ? Even if that person never creates a character with that name in “Guild Wars 2”
i surely hope not

I don’t want to use a name that someone might someday want to use again, i want to use a name that I myself have reserved – unfortunately with my second GW1 account. Is there any possibility to remove the reservation that from my second GW1-account, so that i can use my Character-names?
Looking through the thread there are quite a few people with similar problems. This is not a case of trying to steal a Name from someone else, but people trying to use name that are legitimately theirs.
Quite frankly is the tone of your post a bit insulting, there is no flaming in this thread, simply people trying to get a rough timeline when the Names will be available. I somehow don’t see why it is not possible to give an answer to that question – especially since we were led to believe that the Reservation would end immediately after launch.
In my case, that “someone else” is my wife, and she has no intention of buying GW2 herself. However, as these names have a special meaning to us, I would like to be able to use 2 of the character names from her GW1 account for GW2.
Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any way for a GW1 player to allow ArenaNet to remove their reservations and free them up for other players.
The original blog post about name reservations said:
You must create a Guild Wars 2 character with the same name as your Guild Wars character during the Headstart Access period or on launch day. Shortly after launch, we’ll free up all the unclaimed names for new Guild Wars 2 players to use.
That launch date is now almost 1 month ago… even players who had problems claiming their name on launch date due to hacked or suspended accounts etc should all be back in the game by now and have had plenty of time to claim their reserved names, right?
So I’m sort of not seeing why you would want to postpone freeing up these names any longer?

I want to play my story, but I can’t right now since my name is reserved for another account.

It’s not a matter of “nabbing someone else’s name.” It’s a matter of nabbing my name from my second GW account. If it was someone else’s name I wouldn’t care.
All I want to know is an estimation of how long I will have to wait. I’m not in any rush to play GW2.
An estimate time would really be appreciated.
Sorry, we don’t have one yet, but we’ll update when we do!

Oh no, that’s not what I’m saying. They need to make a GW2 account before the name reservations are cancelled.
