Chat suspensions
I see lots of people swearing in chat. It doesn’t bother me so my filter is off, and from what I can see they don’t often get reported because they keep at it. But when someone tells me “you kittening kitten, go kitten yourself” etc, I’d report them, and I’m sure others would too. There’s a pretty big difference, isn’t there?
It is legitimate, you agreed not to swear, use faul language and so on. You did click I Agree when you started to play, didn’t you?
That chat filter is not a licence to swear (do some searching in the forums). I did turn it off and yes if someone find it funny to use the f* word in every line he or she types, I will report.
It is pretty silly to ban someone for profanity , and the length of the ban is even more silly..
Well, when you guys make a top-selling MMO, you can put your own rules in place and let everyone verbally abuse everyone else. You’re not entitled to a platform to broadcast your profanity.
Furthermore, I don’t know why people always assume the offended party didn’t have their filter on. People misspell words all the time to get around chat filters, and it’s perfectly possible to be verbally abusive without using a single filtered word.
People don’t get a suspension so much for profanity as they do for abusive language. If you got a suspension then it was because you cussed someone, not something. There is a big difference.
The filter is there for people who don’t want to see any foul language at all (and as some people above mentioned, trolls usually find a way to get around it anyway). Others have no problem with seeing foul language, but do take exception to being insulted or abused. Again, the filter is NOT an excuse to be rude or abusive. If you are banned for “language”, odds are good it’s because you were abusing someone, not because of the language itself.
The terms of use for this game mention, last I looked, nothing about a profanity filter. They simply prohibit the use of abusive language and profanity. THe filter can be turned off because some people don’t trust it, and sometimes it gets false positives (at launch, I recall seeing people talking about running groups through “Kes*** Hills” – similar to how the forums like to messup sometimes, turning “Kessex Hills” to Keskitten Hills").
People don’t get a suspension so much for profanity as they do for abusive language. If you got a suspension then it was because you cussed someone, not something. There is a big difference.
You can get suspended for language, but generally that means you you are using an excessive amount of profanity. The GMs do make allowances for non-abusive slip ups.

Not really. Try playing LoL. I do. It’s horrid. Not a single game without someone cursing at the enemy/own team. It’s irratating. Can’t play 3 matches in a row. I personally like how GW2 handles these things.
With that said:
I often too see curses in map chat. The difference being it’s not pointed at anyone. Say someone is throwing stuff in the Mystic forge and says: “F… this Mystic toilet!”. That’s fine by me and probably by most inhabitants of the server. Or after a long struggle at Grenth temple people like to say “F… yeah!”.
Oh, I also have it turned off btw:)
And as for the length of the suspension (they use the term ban to mean permanent closures, not temporary ones) 72 hours is the minimum suspension time. The ToS/EULA is considered your first/only warning.
It’s pretty silly that people think that it is ok to shout words like you said out in e.g. a full square. If you do that in your home town police will remove you and detains you.
There is no difference on being in Lion’s arch (or any public map chat) or being out on the street. The way some people talk there actually should deserve them a one way ticket to mental hospital.

If you think it’s legitimate to ban/suspend someone for using offensive language, then remove the option for a chat filter because it’s clearly useless. Doesn’t matter if someone is actually being offensive, the chat filter option is there for that reason. Banning someone for swearing is far to drastic a measure and makes “security” look very squeamish. People argue, it happens. Stop trying to be everyone’s mom and dad.
PS I know none of the development team actually cares about any of this considering the millions of players, but that is selfish.
Your language was horrible. You sign the User Agreement when you join the game; you have access to the linked Rules of Conduct, etc. No game I can think of would allow what you said to remain in chat, or allow the person who said it to remain without some sort of action.
The language filter is not a license to swear. We built it for players to try to protect themselves, but at no time does it permit offensive chat.
