I was shocked last night when my husband’s account was suspended for 72 hours for an inappropriate name. After perusing the forums and submitting a ticket, I reassured him that he should be able to log in this morning (as I had read in recent posts that first time offenders are reinstated immediately after the ban with the inappropriate character flagged somehow). Unfortunately, he is still unable to log onto the game.
Naturally, we were a bit upset and very confused. We put quite a bit of thought into choosing our names. We even Googled his names last night to try and understand why, but found nothing offensive. All I can hope is that it is a mistake and will be corrected very soon.
Is there any option to defend a name once it is flagged? We will certainly change it if we naively chose a culturally offensive name (We are older and some terms just don’t mean what they did when we were young ), but we would like to argue for the appropriateness of the name if it is at all possible.
ANet employees are only human and can make mistakes. We think we may be the unintended victims of one them, both for the surprisingly inappropriate name and the lengthy suspension for a “TOS-abiding citizen.”
Hoping it’s all cleared up quickly, as I’d really like to game with my husband this weekend.

The name contained a word for defecation. It’s a casual word, and certainly most of us don’t find it offensive. However, because we reach such a broad player base — around the world, multiple age groups, races, cultures, and genders — and because players cannot censor/block the visibility of a Display Name, we do censor names that contain that word.
The error was in suspending the account, and that will be addressed immediately.
Thank you for your understanding.
Account is unsuspended, with our apologies. For a first-time name issue, we generally censor the name (to require renaming) but do not suspend the account. This was the part that was “human error” and it has been rectified now. When your husband logs in, he will be required to rename the one character, but there will be no penalty in doing so.
Thank you for replying so quickly. He is currently staring at his screen trying to decide what to rename his charr.
Our nine-year-old will be so sad that Foo Foo had to go. His name came from a cute little sabre-tooth moose lion cub from a Nickelodeon cartoon show. Here is a link to the show’s wiki showing where the name actually comes from.
If he just took the “p” off and made it Foo Foo Cuddly Oops, would that be okay? That would remove the potentially offensive nature of the name, without destroying the identity and fun story behind it.
He doesn’t want to be suspended again, so he asked me to post and be sure before he makes it permanent.
Absolutely! Nothing wrong with that whatsoever, and it’s quite delightful.

Thank you!!!
This was the most polite customer support/customer conversation I have ever had the pleasure of reading.
I’m also a fan of Foo-foo

Thanks. You made me smile.
Just curious, following the same pattern of thought on “potentially” offensive names, shouldn’t Poobadoo (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Poobadoo) be given a suspension for his “unacceptable” name? He actually has 2 references to excrement.

It’s not personal. The fact that your first notice of inappropriate name gave you a suspension is a mistake. Unless the name is extremely grotesque it’s supposed to just be a rename – no suspension – the first time.
Also, it’s considered bad manners to “necropost” – this thread is months old since the last response.
Hope you put in a ticket wiht support and get back in soon.

Indeed, do not necropost and do not use half information if you do post.
When agreeing to the terms of service you also agreed to abide the naming policy. By choosing an inapropiate name you breached those terms of service. Normally with most breaches a first offense will result in a 72 hour ban. With MOST inapropiate names support is nice enough to let you get a way with a warning and a FREE name change (keep in mind this service normally cost 10 USD). In some extreme breaches of the naming policy (ones where it is very extremely clear that it is inapropiate) you get a 72 hour suspension (and still the free name change afterwards).
If this is your first offense and if you believe your name was not so inapropiate that warrants a 72 hour suspension, you can file a support ticket. Keep in mind that the handling of support tickets also can take up to 72 hours (though in my personal experience, it is in most cases a lot faster).
The amount of caps in your message do show you are upset bout this. But I would urge you to keep it civil and correct, in the end it is something you want from them and you made a mistake. They are just doing their job
Good Luck!! :P
