I have a serious question about account security here.

It’s pretty common sense that having multiple factors for logging in increases security, and that each factor should be unique in order to prevent one compromised account from compromising ALL of your accounts… so why do we log in with our email address? if they know your email address, they’re already halfway to hacking your account, and vice versa.

Most other games require you to log in with your forum username, battletag, etc.

Look at it like this. I already know your forum name, it’s displayed right next to your post. I have no idea what your email address is, so why would using your forum name be more secure?

Make sure to use a unique email address for your game account, that isn’t used anywhere else, and no one will know that email address. That’s the best advice.

Your email address sometimes shows up on your friends list in game instead of your forum account. I don’t know what causes it but it happens. I thought you could try to message someone over the forums and it’d show their email as well.

I haven’t heard anything about that glitch in over a year. I think it has been taken care of. PMing someone on the forum doesn’t show their email address or any personal information, for that matter.

Many emailaccounts can use aliasses. I know that gmail supports this, as well as many others.

Let’s say my email adress would be (it isn’t btw) ranique-tha-best@gmail.com
Then you could make your emailadress for GW2:
Ranique-tha-best@mercuryrocks.gmail.com

The way domain name resolution works is that mails will be sent to the gmail mailserver anyways, and they ignore the ‘mercuryrocks’ part but just look at the part before the @ to see who the mail is for.

However, for logging in the game you need the full adress:
Ranique-tha-best@mercuryrocks.gmail.com as your account name.
