It seems you possess a very particular set of skills…

Anyway, can you please clarify for me- offensive chat?

We all slip occasionally, dropping a s- or f-. Is this okay as long as it isn’t malicious, excessive, or discriminatory?

Hmmm… It seems that anything I say here might be taken as an Outline for How to Get By With Swearing.

But in the spirit in which the question was asked, and in a general sense, we are all gamers, and we all understand the occasional “slip of the tongue.” Dropping a Naughty Word Bomb can be overlooked from time to time, it all depends on the circumstances, whether it was targeted or not, and exactly what was said.

Clearly, “Oh #(*%^, we lost” is entirely different than “You are a #*% @)%$&-ing @O%&(^.” Not just because of the increase in words, but because it’s directed at an individual.

My best suggestion: Think before speaking. It’s really that simple. If you can’t say it at work, in school, or around your sainted Aunt Bessie, you should resist saying it public channels. And to predict the question, yes, we’re more lenient in what is said in Guild Chat, as long as those listening are ok with it and do not report it. Reported offensive chat via any in-game medium is reviewed and has the potential for being acted upon.

Hope that information helps.

That does help, thank you.

.

I’m not going to dignify your straw man arguments with a proper response,

You couldn’t form a proper response anyway, but thanks for trying.

What was typed is all true and to the point and brings valid questions to the forums. Just because fan boys care not to remember what has actually happened and transpired doesn’t mean everyone will.

How does their previous actions against players using in game systems not go with this topic? Right, they do. Anet’s previous action will always shine light on how they operate and choose to respond to situations. Previous actions against players were wildly over done and never acknowledged. So, judging by track record it is more than likely to happen again than not.

Secondly, just because you read some poor saps opinion and he used the magical word now thrown around by every fan boy, “Straw Man”, doesn’t mean you know when and how to apply it. The above is inductive reasoning. Learn the difference.

I looked at the squad color, and I would not call the two colors “substantially different” They’re very similar, to me, almost the same. Now, it’s a good point that impersonating a GM is a serious offense, and we can report them, but I might look at making the colors a bit more different.

Yeah, I’d have to agree. My color weakness is with reds and greens, but if these weren’t side by side I’d have a hard time telling which is which. There are minor details like general chat versus a whisper, but I think these could be too easily confused off the bat.

Then again with the strict policies in place, it might not be a substantial issue.

I take your comments on board: If that screenshot is representative of GM and squad chat, the gold is very similar and that can cause confusion (and possible griefing).

Let us have a few days to look at this (due to the holidays) and see if there’s a way to make GM/Gm chat more obviously different from other in-game chat strings.

Thanks for the feedback, guys!

Quick question: These golden whispers will they be blocked from players view if the chat box settings are on don’t show whispers and game messages or are they considered something else?
I don’t plan on ever getting one hopefully but i would still like to know.

If someone has turned off whispers, then I believe that player will not get the warning. This is the player’s choice, of course. We will not make a different or additional effort to contact the player. Again, the warning is a courtesy, and whether (1) a player puts her- or himself in a situation that earns a warning, and (2) blocks whispers, is entirely the choice of the player.

May I humbly suggest you consider some sort of screen print message in large font and some godly thunder / reverb.

That some may be turned from their wicked ways and resume the path of righteousness – or at least harmlessness.

I could have SO much fun with this! For instance, I totally want to record a “Turn away from the Dark Side” message. Or maybe “This is a warning. Go forth and sin no more.” Or “You are standing on the edge of an abyss. Step away! Take the path of non-cheatiness!!”

Ok, I should stop now.

So…where’s the kickstarter for that feature?

Could use a different font for the colorblind.

Ps. On a side note, having trouble seeing red aoe circles, differentiating between rare/masterwork/exotic champ bags and other items, and differentiating between /whisper and /party chats. Thanks!

On a serious note, I’ve seen and contributed to continued internal discussion about this subject. We do understand the situation. Years ago, I got a very nice e-mail from a Guild Wars (original) player who told me about how both he and his brother were colorblind and what challenges that posed for them to play games. I did some research and was quite surprised to learn that approximately 11% of males have some form of colorblindness. I truly understand the challenges, and I know the team does, as well.

The chat displays the players’ names bold, so the formatting isn’t restricted to colors. So for GM whispers, you could turn the text itself bold and the GM’s name additionally italic or so. This would also stress the importance of the message and would work independently from colorblindness and similar scenarios.

An alternative would be underlining, but that’s ugly as hell.

I don’t play with my sound on most of the time, I’d never notice it. Particle effect would be nice though.

How about some annyoing particles/effects down at the chat window (like nyan cat rainbow colored confetti or something) that will be there until you read the warning? Then it simply cant be missed.

Put the ArenaNet logo at the start! The same used by ANet employees as a guild tag.

That’ll make sure it can’t be faked.

Hey I like this idea. Unfortunately I don’t think we have the capacity to add images to chat string. (Otherwise, I’d have had a frog preceding every single line of my chat, since 2004. ) I will ask about it, though.

It’s a relief to see this. I admit this with trepidation, but I always have this nagging fear that my thousands of hours in play will eventually net me a ban, just for some exploit I didn’t realize was an exploit, or something else. It’s nice to see that it won’t come without warning.

And of course you’re always welcome to discuss the matter in a support ticket if you’re in doubt about something. Rest assured, too, that in the very unlikely event that your account were inaccurately flagged — and again, that’s a very, very rare situation — the team will react as quickly as possible to your ticket.

But I agree with you that having warnings for certain activities is a good thing.

Hello Gaile, I thought you would have retired by now. I like this new warning system. It would be very helpful to those being harassed by other players while using their maize balm. However, we dont have an option to report people for camping ambient spawns or stealing our kills while using our maize balm, which we paid for. I think another option for reporting players is needed. I am afraid I will get my own account in trouble with the current report options. Perhaps adding “Harassment, verbal or non verbal” to the list of options would be appropriate. Thanks

Getting inaccurately flagged seems to happen more often than unlikely, or I am unlucky. I had a name flagged and a perm ban before. Both was undone by support.

Hi Zach. The “non-verbal” makes me ponder, and really, the best way to handle non-verbal harassment — anything that would be impossible to find in chat logs — is to submit a ticket. (I’m really not sure what would define “non-verbal harassment” but the team could at least review the ticket to figure that out.)

Players have suggested that we expand the list of issues that they can report in the game. At the present time, the team is focused on developing some really cool behind-the-scenes tools that will allow us to better support our players. In the future we may be able to look at expanding the in-game report system. In the meantime, for issues of harassment of a verbal nature, please choose offensive chat and the report will be reviewed as soon as possible.

No offense, but submitting a ticket is a long and unpopular process. Among all my friends, I’m the only who actually know how to use a ticket. Many players think the only way to report a problem/infraction is to use the IG tool. So they report hacking/harassment under the category “bot”, because they know that GMs hate bot users and so they hope GMs will look closely at these accounts.

And remember, GW2 is PEGI 12. Does a 12 yo boy or girl know how to submit a ticket ? Where can players learn how to use it, except on this forum ?

One big problem with submitting something, be it a bug or bot report, is the realtime nature of the game. You don’t have the time to enter required information. Depending on the nature of the incident, it may be in the middle of a battle where you don’t even have one second of spare time.
If there were a mechanism to to remember or record things, so I can report what happened 5 minutes ago, I could and would report much more bugs for example. If I could report more griefers or other malicious players, I don’t know, however.

I had initially thought I’d want to lock this thread. At this point, I’ll leave it open. However, here are some guidelines:

  • We’re not going to say “this infraction will get a warning” and “that infraction will earn a suspension.” Please don’t ask that.
  • We’re not going to get into a philosophical discussion about “If you’re warning about XYZ, then you are required to warn about ABC.” Just… don’t go there because any form of warning is a kindness, not a requirement.
  • Any mention of “Freedom of Speech” or your other constitutional rights, or a citation of legal action, will be smote with my Bow of the Mighty Slaughtering of Fools. But then, I always have that bow at the ready.

Would you care to explain exactly who you are referring to as “Fools”? I certainly do not tolerate this kind of insulting expressions from anyone. Unless you take it back of course and apologise.

I am still waiting for an answer. If you are so kind of course.

I have yet to get an answer. Okay then. I am reporting this posting for using insulting expressions.

Have fun, on the forums, they tend to also take action against people who abuse the reporting system. Are you really reporting an Anet employee for what they named their smited tool? OR are you really that much of a troll.

I’m a Moose, a ginger moose even.
