Exactly same location for the attempts to get into my account! Thing is, the guy managed to get in and spent a day farming materials before sending them to his other account… lost everything and rollback not possible because the technology isn’t implemented to the game yet… lame.

Wish we could completely country or even state lock our accounts. That way no one across any border could ever access our account.

I’m starting to think ANet got hit. No other tech site that I am registered to has this email address. They all use dummy accounts. Guild Wars 2 is the only game that I have registered to my main email account. Thankfully I have different passwords for the game and my account. I to received an email this morning stating that someone from China tried to access my GW2 account. So, that leads me to state the obvious.

Anet hasnt gotten “hit”. Your own security has lapsed. If arenanet had been compromised, its pretty certain that out of 2 million + accounts, a couple of thousand at best were compromised.

What you are seeing now is no different than in any other MMO. Just because its happened to you is the reason it seems to be rampant. It even has it’s own name. Red car syndrome.

My security has lapsed? Right. When I clearly stated that both passwords for this game and my email account are different. Maybe you should learn to read properly and not make a fool of yorself.

How am i making a fool out of myself? Wheres your info about anti malware apps, anti-virus apps, checking that your email isnt compromised, perhaps a deep level reformat and reinstall to be sure you dont have any stray apps.

It’s you thats not making any sense. Not me.

Simply having different usernames and passwords isnt a guaranteed way to keep your accounts secure.

My computer was straight up rebooted from square one a couple weeks ago. Might as well have been opening the box for the first time. No downloads, no torrents, not even steam. Just straight this is the game, install it, play it. Computer is crazy fast now, loving it. But I have twice now had my account hacked. First time, kitteny password, my bad. Second time? After the virus scan, and having a history of playing mmo’s and never having this issue before even with kitten passwords? Something is going on and it is not on my end.

simply going on a random website can have a keylogger download in the background, or you can get one from any flash ad.

You still need to check and not simply say " i formatted weeks ago."

Just because you havent had an issue with other mmo’s doesnt mean you wont with any other. You are saying the same thing everyone does when they get compromised for the first time.

You need to find out where the compromise happened, and its not on arenanets side. Otherwise EVERYONE would have their accounts accessed, and not a few thousand.

You cna blieve it or not, thats up to you, but the more you refuse to troubleshoot your own system, the more it will happen to you.

Just because you think your previous online accounts were never compromised doesn’t mean they weren’t. You admit to using passwords that are not the best. It would not surprise me if your previous accounts were compromised and you just didn’t know it.

A list of close to half a million (yes, half a million) Yahoo emails and passwords was posted online a few months ago. I couldn’t believe the passwords I saw. I would not be surprised if several thousand or so of those accounts are registered with GW2, with unchanged passwords. I’d also bet that if the people weren’t required to change their Yahoo passwords, many would never even know that their account credentials were leaked.

My friend got hacked. The great part is that the person changed e-mail and ArenaNet sent a “Oh by the way, we hope this was you that did it” but didn’t MAKE someone click on the link to reset the password.

This is the worse MMO security I’ve ever seen. Seriously ArenaNet.. why do you allow people to reset passwords and CHANGE EMAIL ADDRESSES without a FORCED confirmation or some type of security questions?

Completely mind boggling.

Thank you for understanding and for stating the case so clearly.

I encourage everyone to read Mike O’Brien’s new blog post on the subject of security and take the recommendation and our new practices to heart!
