Helpful note for inappropriate names
Still i think A-Net is a bit too overzealous about their naming policy. If one have wild enough imagination he or she can report (almost)any name as inappropriate.
ArenaNet’s policies and code of conduct are more than a mere guideline, they are enforced. Best when creating a name, don’t choose something risky that can end up as regret.

i kinda got the same problem, my acount name and character name is “Toversletje” now when i try to log in on the charracter it gives me the option to change the name and it sais Toversletje is not allowed. Toversletje is a dutch name and unless they have a dutch person working at arenanet who decided about my name i dont see why they decided i should change my name. This name sounds so much worse when you try to translate it to english. Im using this name in every other game i play and i have never had any problems with it. alot of dutch people talk to me saying, haha nice name and stuff but thats about it. In dutch its more laughable and enjoyable than when u try to translate it. im not being suspended or anything and i think its strange im not getting any notification or something since my acount name is the same. i would love to see some1 from arenanet reply to me. if not im thinking of writing a ticket since i would realy like to keep this awesome name.
best regards, Toversletje
I’m simply explaining why I’m right.
@Toversletje
I think you should be suspended for 72hrs and you account name forcibly changed.

It doesnt matter in what language you write your name. As long as it uses inappropriate or obscene words someone will find it offending and report you.

1st of all i wouldnt mind at all to change my acount name. 2nd as you may have found out its alot worse when you try to translate it to english. also the translation that google is showing isnt 100% correct.
click the link and look at example 8… that should clear it up abit.

It doesnt matter if its correct or not. What matters is what you get if you try to lookup/translate that word.
and thats where i disagree, shouldnt it be about what the name actually means? not about what the google search engine tells you it means? i dont know where you are from but if your native language isnt english you will probablly use the translater sometimes “even if it is for fun” to translate your language to english and see what comes out. if you did im sure you also noticed that alot of what it tells you is incorrect.
the reason im even mentioning this on the forum is that i just want to have a chance to get my beloved name back. i dont wanna be looking back someday thinking “GAWD! why didnt i try?”.
as for now, i always pick my names very carefully. i dont want to have an character with a name that i dont like. i deleted my level 39 ranger becouse i didnt like the name and id rather make one with a better name. so now i cant play on my elementalist until i come up with an equaly good name as Toversletje. Im trying to come up with funny names intended to make people laugh abit when they read it. thats what Toversletje always did for me in other games. its a great way to meet new people just becouse they whisper me about how funny my name is

In any debate about names, about “Should that or should that not be flagged” I remind folks that we have players from all around the world: different cultures, languages, ages, genders. And that means that we take care in name situation, particularly because players see names without choice — they are not filtered by an individual’s settings (unlike language in chat).
We don’t react immediately on a name report (unless it’s obviously bad) but instead review to see if it truly needs to be blocked. I think we’re pretty lenient and yet respectful of our community and of keeping the game pleasant for everyone.
