Bought the game today, only to find out about how the system works with full servers and creating characters. If I was playing by myself I’d just roll on a lower pop server, but I have a friend I want to play with (Who also plays with other friends) so I have to be on Jade Quarry.
Is it a real “24/7 full” thing, or is there commonly space available at odd hours?

If you delete all your characters, you can move for free and be with your friend. There is a limit of one move per 7 days, so keep that in mind. And yes, if the world is full, you need to try at different times of the day and I bet you’re there quite soon.

As I am more or less only trying to play with my friend, on their server, I would appreciate it if someone would let me have another swap, as I really do not want to wait 7 days to try and get onto his server.

Unfortunately, there is a 7-day cooldown on any and all server transfers. But you can guest to any server within your region, and play with friends. =) You can not, however, partake in WvW whilst guesting. Welcome to Tyria, and happy adventuring!

I don’t mean to sound too negative, but the idea of rolling a character only for it to be deleted if/when I can play with my friend is not very appealing, and I bought the game in large part just to play with him. It’s more or less useless to me if I can’t play with my friend, and guesting is not a substitute for being on the same realm.
Although it may not be the optimal solution, there is little difference between guesting and home server (other than WvW). You do not have to delete your character(s) to transfer; you can purchase gems (either with cash or in-game gold) and transfer all characters when the opportunity arises. =)
I stayed up till 4 AM looking at the server list and the 4 servers stayed full the entire time. Even if I hadn’t stupidly blown my transfer, I never would have been able to switch, and I’m not going to stay up till 2 every day trying to sneak on.

I understand your feelings, but your judgement bout arenanet is wrong in my opinion. Off course it isn’t nice to not be able to play with friends. But in an open world MMO there has to be some limit to how much people are allowed in a map. each map has maybe 500 foes in it. if there wasn’t a server limit, there might be 5000 players on a certain map?? how nice do you think it is to have to run like hell to reach a foe when it spawns or be limited cause you can’t have enough time to be able to kill.
The servers have limits cause of that. To help you minimize the impact there is the guesting service. But asking for the limit to go away would be as bad as what is happening to you.
I know it sucks, but all you can do in this game or any other is guest till there is room or get your friends to go to a new server. The system is as reasonable and player friendly it can be within the limitations of reality.

I guested one day on two different servers to find open temples for karma armor. From my experience it looks to me that you can log into another server exactly twice in 24 hours. This means you had better only want to play with your friend or family twice every 24 hours. If I’m wrong about that, please explain how you can guest back to the server.

How to guest
From the character selection screen, choose World Selection. Choose the world to which you wish to guest and click on the Guest button (next to the Transfer button). After confirming your choice, the game will place a suitcase icon symbol next to the guest world. The next character you play will be guesting on that server and continue to do so until you logout, change characters, restart the current character. To guest again (or with another character), repeat the same steps.
You are eligible to guest as many times as you like, but you may only choose up to two guest worlds every 24 hours.
You can guest to the same two worlds as many times as you like within the 24 hours; you can choose two different worlds to guest to once every 24 hours. Hope this helps explain how it works. =)
I read all the replies to this poster and I am 100% with the OP. I also just had 2 friends buy the game who could not get onto my server. They thought they got 1 free transfer so rolled on another server and waited til a chance to transfer came up. It did last night!
Boy were they surprised when they got asked for a 20$ transfer fee…

Many games charge (up to $50) to change servers. We allow a player to gather the costs in the game, at no additional fee, or to buy gems to accomplish it more quickly — as the player desires. We also allow the player to delete his/her characters — as I have mentioned in at least 20 threads — and transfer without any cost in gems. This option is particularly helpful for new players, and as you mention your two friends are new, this option should appeal to them.
Quite honestly, I am not sure why anyone would feel he/she was entitled to “one free transfer.” That is not posted anywhere, and as far as I know is not the norm in other games, either.
