Last year, I stopped playing GW2 and I was on the Gandara server. I reinstalled the game yesterday and to my surprise, when I log back in, I’m on Whiteside Ridge. When I try to transfer to the server I was originally on (and wanted to stay on!) it’s asking me to pay gems.

I never received any confirmation of this server change, and I’d like my characters to be placed back on Gandara without having to pay real money to undo a change I never requested or approved.

What can I do?

https://en.support.guildwars2.com/ and ask a question.

There are two possible reasons for this.
a: in the first months of the game you couldn’t guest and becasue of that limitation server transfer was free. When you stopped playing you transfered yourself to Whiteside Ridge. The moment that guesting was introduced as well as the end of free world transfer was announced in game but also through social media and well before the actual moment. So basicly this option would mean that you made a user error. Depending on how long you activly played on whiteside they might be kind for you to give you a free transfer, but they are not entitled to do so.

b: The other possibility is that you got hacked and the hacker transfered you.

So first step is that it is important to ask support what the reason is.
Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll open a ticket.

I’m 100% positive my account hasn’t been compromised and that I didn’t transfer servers myself, even though it probably sounds typical of me to say that I’m sure there was no error on my part.

Arc – go to My account at the top of this page and click security and verify your authorized networks are correct (and yours). If a foreign entry is in there then you have been compromised.

To my knowledge there has never been an unexplained server transfers, that is, no in-game issue has transferred someone without player prompting. I have seen players accidentally transfer when they thought they were merely looking at the list of worlds. But more likely — although you may not have seen the effects yet — is that your account has been compromised and it just has not been stripped yet. I agree that checking your authorized networks is a good idea. Further, check your inventory, as sometimes a hacked account is used for holding stolen goods and you may find you have more than you expected.

Feel free to contact Support by filing a ticket through the “Ask a Question” tab on that linked page. They will be happy to help you.

I agree with Gaile. The other issue is if an account is compromised, they may be simply keeping it in their “stable” of accounts and have just not got around to using it yet.
I had the displeasure of speaking to a game hacker several years ago. He told me he would gain access to a dozen or so accounts and keep them in reserve, only accessing them when needed to replace an account that got banned.

That is precisely what I meant when I mentioned that possibly the account was compromised but that compromise is not yet visible to the account owner. Hackers do gather their ill-gotten goods whenever they can, and then use them as “needed.”
