As you probably are aware, with the release of “The Nightmare Within” update on November 12, 2013, newly-purchased infinite gathering tools are now account bound. This is a great change, and one that was much-requested by our players.

Soulbound infinite gathering tools can be exchanged for account-bound versions through the Black Lion Weapons Specialists. These NPCs can be found near the Black Lion Traders in every city that hosts a Trading Post. For example, in Lion’s Arch the Black Lion Weapons Specialists are located on the second floor and can be reached by taking either stairway adjacent to the Black Lion Traders. Note: Be sure to un-equip any infinite gathering tools before speaking to a Black Lion Weapons Specialist because these items cannot be exchanged if they are equipped.

Now for those of you who purchased, say, four of the exact same item for the use of four different characters, we will be happy to give you a gem refund for any multiple items you have of a specific type. For instance, if you purchased three Molten Mining Picks to be used by three different characters, you should convert one of those picks to an account-bound item for use by any character on your account. Upon deletion of the second and third Molten Mining Pick, we will issue a gem refund for the additional Molten Mining Picks you no longer require. So again, the first of any specific infinite gather tool must be converted — we will refund gems only for duplicates of the duplicate named item.

If you would like to receive a gem refund for your extra soulbound infinite gathering tools of a certain type, please contact Support. Visit the “Support” tab at the top of this page, then choose “Submit a request” and choose “In-Game Issue.” Fill in the form, and in the section that says “Issue – No selection” select “In-Game Item” and then “Other.” Explain what items you currently possess and a support agent will guide you through the conversion and gem refund process.

I have one (maybe silly) little questionon this:

For instance, if you purchased three Molten Mining Picks to be used by three different characters, you should convert one of those picks to an account-bound item for use by any character on your account. Upon deletion of the second and third Molten Mining Pick, we will issue a gem refund for the additional Molten Mining Picks you no longer require.

I bought 2 bone picks. One is now converted to account-bound. The second, character-bound one, lies in the characters inventory. Do I have to delete this one myself, before applying for a gem refund, or should I keep it in the inventory as proof, that I do have two picks of the same kind?

thanks,
Z.

When you fill out the request they will send you an email explaining what to do (you will delete it at their request).

Of course, be patient. I deleted 5 molten picks about 19 hours ago and still no gem refund. It took 1 hour to get the email from support to know procedure.

So expected it to take a while essentially.

Hi Gale,
Thank you for the clarification. I sent in a request and received instructions on what to do. I’ve been busy and haven’t done so yet which maybe was a good thing.

I’ll review the email again, and was going to before i followed the instructions because I am a nervous guy when doing such things. The thing is I didn’t see anything in the instructions that they had to be tools that you had extras of. I bought the different visual effect ones only because they were soulbound and I couldn’t bring myself to buy extra of the same exact same look. (Ie a molten pick and a bone pick)

If that is truly the case that is fine, but I just wanted to let you know that the instructions when received via support may be a little unclear on that part.

If you were in contact with Support and working through the gem refund process, then did what you described, no problem. If you deleted without contacting Support first, please discuss with them.

Note: We ask that you contact Support before deleting items, so you’re sure to go through the gem refund process properly. If you’re not sure how this all works, CS will be happy to work with you!

Actually, they are giving refunds for duplicate tools since they changed them to account bound. There’s a post in this very forum about it.

If you have more than one of the same type of tool, open a support ticket and request your refund.

The refund process is intended for duplicates of the same item. For example, if you had two Bone Picks, we could refund one. But with two separate items, the refund offer does not apply because they are different items.

They may look different, but they essentially do the exact same thing. Is this really a materially different purchase than people who bought multiples of the exact same gathering tool?

Of course the time it takes for Anet to effect these refunds isn’t free, so I can see where at some point you would have to say, sorry can’t help you on that one.

Sure, I bet we can help you! If you have identical items — that is, the same exact item (not two different items of the same type) — submit a ticket to Support and we’ll get you fixed up.

To be clear, here’s what I wrote about the “same item” requirement: The refund process is intended for duplicates of the same item. For example, if you had two Bone Picks, we could refund one. But with two separate items, the refund offer does not apply because they are different items, even if the function is the same.

But when you released the Molten Pick, you advertised it as the last pick i will ever need, so I bought one. Now you release another one with a more versatile functionality. I think those extra sprockets while mining are nice and we can always argue about different skins.
But why am I forced now to spend another 1000 gems for my extra chance at sprockets and you dont refund the 800 gems for my old pick? Or why cant i just upgrade my old pick to the best functionality in game?

The functionality referred to what kinds of nodes it mined – and it mines the same nodes the watch work pick will mine. It would be nice for the other two picks to get a small bonus (chance at azurite pebbles for Molten!) but this is the kind of thing you risk when you buy something – that sometime will come later that has something you want.

On the plus side, you only paid 800 vs the 1000.

I’ve seen this rumor in a few threads, and I can’t find anywhere ArenaNet said this is ‘the last pick you’ll ever need to buy’. Here is the actual text when the Bone Pick (the previous pick) was released:

’New—Bone Pick

This gruesome mining pick is made from the toughest ossified body parts around and is guaranteed to gather even the most valuable metals without ever breaking!’

If you have another source, I’d be thrilled to see it. =)

In order to ask about that phrasing I need to see it. I’m sorry — I’m definitely not meaning to say “If you can’t show me, it wasn’t said” but I don’t want to take a team member’s time to ask about this if I’m not able to point at it, you see?

A lot of times, people say “It was on the Guild Wars 2 Official Forum!” But it was there because a random forum member said it, not us. That could be the case here. Or maybe there was content that said that. I just don’t know.

I guess really whether or not that statement was made is somewhat off the original topic, anyway. Items differ, and what is valid at the time of the sale can change. It would be foolish and time consuming and extremely costly to refund everyone every time we offer a newer, better items.

If you sell items over a year, and then say “This is the latest and best” that’s not to suggest that previous items weren’t good, just that the most recent is the best. And if in the past, the item offered was the best of its class, that can change too as time passes.

I’m thinking of a certain store I like that has “The greatest sale of the season” and “the best sale of the season” and “the best sale of all” and all sorts of things. Basically, they have stuff on offer.

I haven’t gotten generic smartphone 5s because my husband says he’ll leave me because he hates generic smartphone company. XD (this is a joke, but it has been said)

Anyway, the difference, I think, is that the phone has a shelf life. It wears out, gets slower, gets cracked or damaged, but the unlimited mining pick has no obsolescence. Or at least we thought. I planned on buying all incarnations of these tools (and have) because I’m a collector and love new skins. But I now feel like the new ones make my really nice, say, elementalist themed ones, obsolete, and that really disappoints me, since I love my main ele and now I feel like I have to change her tools (I do know it’s silly to care, but as an RP nerd I really love them)

Edit: I really hope this makes sense.

It’s probably not possible to upgrade the current tools to give similarly themed “bonuses” is it? If not, I get that. It would be really cool to get azurite again, though, but I dislike that idea because that’s hardly fair to people who did not get the molten when it came out (unfair advantage, I guess). Anyway, it would be cool if we could “transmute” skins (and maybe get the second tool back skinless or something?) so that we could get the best of both worlds by spending the extra 1000 gems. I don’t know. I’m just spouting ideas that would make me happy, and I get that not everyone would agree.

Eh, anyway, I’ll still spend mondo gems on the store. I’ll never stop, because I like the stuff too much.

This case is very different as the new mining pick is better because it produces higher output, and therefore more gold per swing, than any previous pick. It also has a functionality that cannot be replicated in-game without using the gem store item. That latter point isn’t normally a problem because the gem store always releases items that are purely for convenience, but this isn’t just for convenience. On the contrary, Gaile, this item produces a net profit for the user; it is actually giving you more gold in the grand scheme of things. And it’s not enough to say “Well, Sprockets aren’t worth a lot now” because the free market and supply and demand determine that value; the price can change. It is in this way that the Generic Smartphone analogy completely breaks down because that upgrade is entirely convenience, like most things on the Gem Store.

A more appropriate analogy might be as follows:

What if you joined a bank that gave you a 0.06% interest gain on your money if you spent $100 in March, but later on in August the bank has a sale where, for the same price of $100, gives you a 0.08% interest gain and if you got the previous upgrade, you’d have to pay the whole $100 again to get the extra money. This is a shoddy business practice because it is dealing in actual currency that dictates how the person can pay for other goods. I definitely would be in an uproar over that, and I believe it is safe for me to say that many others would as well.

Hopefully that helps shed light on why it’s not okay. I don’t hate you guys. Au contraire, I love ANet and have supported you for more than a decade. I just think this is a very shoddy business practice, and I think the people who endorsed it simply don’t realize it (and I would like very much if they did).

And for the record, Gaile, I have Generic Smartphone 5, and it’s worth it for the convenience. :P

If you sell items over a year, and then say “This is the latest and best” that’s not to suggest that previous items weren’t good, just that the most recent is the best. And if in the past, the item offered was the best of its class, that can change too as time passes.

It’s still a shoddy business tactic and scares users like myself into never buying upgrades or convenience items for fear that something down the road will come out that’s better. This new pick really disappointed me and shot a lot of my confidence in the gem store. Now I can’t even bring myself to get the Salvage-o-Matic because “what if something better comes out”.

RisingDusk — really? That makes me think of a good friend and former neighbor. He worked in the tech industry, but never bought himself a home computer. Why? Because he was afraid that “they” would offer something new — faster processor, better video card, improved RAM — and he’d then be “behind” in his tech. So he went without because somewhere, down the line, another something came along that outperformed what he could have been using, with great pleasure, for years!

I am using a… let’s call it “Generic SmartPhone 4,” and I know I should upgrade to the 5, but I worry that the minute I do it, the Generic SmartPhone 6 will come out. And about daily, I tell myself, “Just go get the upgrade” and I’m going to do it this weekend, but I should have done it months ago.

Sorry, long post. The point is, I wouldn’t let “what might be, by and by,” influence what you do in the here and now. Just my opinion, of course. Your mileage may vary!

I don’t personally have much of a problem with the new pick, or at least not to the degree that others seem to, but I do see a pretty significant difference between technology that evolves and improves through innovation over time, and what we are seeing with the new pick. There is a large difference, IMO, between, “the technology has advanced to the point that the new phones are capable of so much more than was possible before,” and, “we could have included this feature in the mining picks previously released but chose not to, and are not selling an upgrade option other than completely buying the entire product, including the features for which players have already paid, again.”

When a new app is put out for my generic Smartphone 4 I do not have to buy an entire new phone, including all previously owned apps, to get it.

Some option to upgrade existing picks, even if for a nominal charge, might not be a bad idea.

I dont want to speak for everyone, so i link a related important topic about this new Infinite Gathering Tools.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Watchwork-Pick-Non-inflammatory-please/first

As you can see here, lot of player are against that and considere its a very bad moove for some good reason, and that need some fix. Lot of discuss and proposal actualy on-going in the topic. (Basicly, a bonus we cant find out of gemstore isnt welcome at all. Same for a vertical progression in permanent gemstore tools.)

Its really a big issues if you read that and all related topic.

I dont actualy know where is the right place for this, here, or in this other topic, then sorry if i made a mistake for link that in the wrong place.

Sorry for my bad english.

Yes, I see your points, Lilith, and I respect there are many different ways of looking at things. I just don’t want RD to feel bad, or betrayed, or somehow feel negatively towards us, as a company. That really is all I’m hoping, because I <3 ArenaNet and I believe we do right by our players.

Thanks for your replies on this issue Gaile, and I do know that you personally make a big effort to do right by the players (this is obvious to anyone who reads the forum, I think). From what I’ve seen others posting, and from my own perspective, this tool release has hurt the company image among many of us. Perhaps this could have been avoided with different messaging around this and previous product releases, but the product itself, without any further comment on the thinking behind it, is raising a warning flag that maybe the gem store’s governing principles that many of us like about this game (cosmetic rather than balance-changing products) are at risk. That is giving some loyal players cause to feel “bad, or betrayed.”

I don’t feel upset.

Thought I’d put my 2c in, because usually when we are fine with something we never say anything, but when we’re upset we speak up.

I feel more inclined that I’m a consumer, I can hold out for improved products or buy a product right now with what features the product currently has. If later a more improved version comes out, I don’t believe it’s my given right as a consumer to expect a free upgrade. Some products this is just not even possible, clothing, food, electronic equipment, it even happens with software/digital downloads. I own Microsoft Office 2007 and when 2010 came out no one upgraded me to 2010 for free, and I didn’t expect it.

This was the release page for the molten mining pick: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/red-hot-new-items-in-the-gem-store-now/

nothing about the last pick you’ll need to buy that I can see.

Thanks for the link .

I believe I remember now – is there any way to check the little splashes that rotate when you open up the gem store – there’s usually 5-6 of them and they cycle every couple of seconds? I’m thinking that is where people saw “The last pick you’ll ever need” (because I remember seeing that phrase too, but not “on the boards”…)

That does sound like where I remember seeing that.

So far image captures I’ve found are:

Copper-Fed Salvage-o-Matic

  • Salvage without the fuss!

Chop-It-All Logging Axe

  • Chop-It-All
  • Unlimited Logging
  • Limited Sale!

Consortium Harvesting Sickle

  • Unbreakable!
  • Permanent Harvest Sickle!

Molten Pick

  • Never run out of mining picks again!

Bone Pick

  • Never run out of mining picks again!

Jack-in-the-Box Scythe

  • Unbreakable!
  • Permanent Harvest Sickle!

Dreamcleaver Logging Axe

  • Logging for any character for all time!

I am wondering if that statement evolved from the Dreamcleaver splash, though the “Never need to buy another X again!” or “The last X you’ll ever need!” sound way too familiar and I know I’ve seen it on something.

I can’t find an info pop-up on the Gathering Tool 3 Pack sale…might’ve been on that. But it may also have been on the original splashes for these above listed items, or their re-introduction splashes…I don’t know if they were different from eachother.

cant we just add little bonusses to the other 6 gathering tools? like getting spores with the dreamcleaver and passiflora with the consortium harvesting sickle or something? or would this start the same discussion for all the people who never bought those tools because they didnt have the options back than.

Honestly I’ve been a huge supporter of Anet since GW1 betas,
and while this won’t stop me from playing.
I can understand why it’s got people all worked up.

  • -20% Chance to Drop Watchwork Sprockets is a definite advantage to 0% chance
so this leans on the Pay-To-Win side as opposed to simple convenience.
those with other mining picks (Even Infinite) will not gain as much value out of
each gathering node (on average) as those with this pick
  • -Previous releases (Molten Pick —> Bone Pick)
(Consortium Sickle --> Jack in the Box Scythe)
    (Chop-it-All Axe —> Dreamcleaver Axe)
had established a “Cosmetic Change Only” precedent
  • -Obsolescence, “Infinite” mining picks don’t run out of uses, so if you do spend
full price to buy the new pick when you already have an old infinite pick, you
“Waste” the old pick as it cannot be sold, so it just takes up room in your storage.
  • -The More you supported Anet by purchasing previous items, the more you are
    affected.

If this was planned, than treating Gathering Tools like Weapons
(with alterable skins & sigils) would have been a better plan

If not feasible than perhaps as proposed above simply adding a method to upgrade an existing pick to add %drop stats.

Analogy-wise I think this is more like having a car you can neither sell nor rent and having the dealer offer a new car that runs off wind and sunlight unlike your existing gas guzzler that gets 3 mpg.
Sure you don’t NEED a new solar car but it provides a distinct monetary advantage to it’s owners.
So an engine conversion package would be a nice offer :-)

Gaile, honestly I think the kind of attitude Arena Net is taking with this ( i will no mention the Cultural Armor) makes people just go away… if you check you will see that since i bought the game i have already spend over $2000 or more in this game, and I started to slow down on my gem purchase exactly because of this… why should I invest in something now if in a few days i could have something better, or a better way of seeing this is why should i bother to invest if the investment will no be rewarding against the guy that bought the pick now for the same money have better features?, and you guys just could upgrade all the mining picks.

I am in the software development business (for car manufactures) what do you think if our customers would do if I sold them a software and on the next month i sell the same software with better features to another client for the same price?? for one, i would lose my customers for sure…

please have the team at least reviewing this.

What happens if the players that actually put money in the game stop doing it because is just not worthy??

Guys, for the most part I think this has been a civil and helpful conversation. I want to thank you (well most of you) for keeping a constructive tone, and sharing your thoughts.

I believe I understand your position better now, and that’s always a good thing. If my “Generic SmartPhone” analogy wasn’t quite right for you, I apologize. It made sense to me. It makes sense to me now. But I understand some of you don’t agree.

Anyway, this thread started as and is intended to provide information about a support-related situation that involved item refunds. I’d like to keep it on that topic, because there still are some people who may desire to request such a refund.

If I could ask you to share your thoughts on the item in the appropriate forum — I am pretty sure that would be the Black Lion Trading Company Forum — I’d appreciate it. Please know I am not trying to deflect or shut down the discussion, just get it where it belongs and is most likely to be noted.

Thanks for understanding.
