My last suggestion.
There doesn’t need to be a “progress bar for infractions”. Why would Anet implement a system that tells people that they can be bad for X amount of infractions? Wouldn’t it be better for Anet not to give people a specific number so those said people will be afraid that they just incurred another infraction and they think they will get banned if they do it again? Anet’s system works. It keeps people (some people) from insulting, cussing, or doing other bad things and makes them think twice about it. If you got ip banned, it was for a reason. You must have received lots and lots of infractions, because I’m up to about 20 and haven’t received a single ban.
You get an increasing suspension length each time you break TOS. First offense is 72 hours, next is either 7 days or 2 weeks. Not sure how much longer you get after that but if those first two didn’t teach you that you needed to watch what you typed, what makes you think that some bar would?

Because I assumed permanent bans were only for people hurting the game like bots, etc and knowing there was a block feature and an optional language filter never in all my years of playing mmo’s would I imagine they would justify a permanent i.p death for inappropriate language and I would only direct it towards people who are not offended and would never attempt to bypass the optional filter.

You agreed to the TOS, saying you read it. Once you got a few suspensions that were getting longer and longer, you could have googled it and read it. In the future I recommend you don’t agree to legal documents without reading them first.
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/legal/guild-wars-2-conduct-breaches-outcomes/
So what happens when someone breaks the Rules of Conduct?
“In the interests of keeping things pleasant for the majority of players, we’ve set up a system to deal with lapses in behavior. We think you’ll find the system is fair, balanced, and reasonable.
The system involves two types of administrative action: temporary account suspensions and permanent account terminations. Those who fail to observe the Rules of Conduct usually will have an administrative “mark” placed on their Guild Wars 2 account that results in a temporary account suspension. However, in the case of an extreme breach-such as using a game exploit, attempting to hack the servers, or acquiring a large number of marks and moving into a “frequent violation” status-the account will be permanently closed.
When an account is temporarily suspended, the player is unable to access his account for a specific period of time. Under normal circumstances, a player can clear marks from his/her account and eliminate the risk of lengthy suspension simply by obeying the Rules of Conduct. On the other hand, if a player accrues another mark on his account within a relatively short period of time, the subsequent suspension will be longer. A record is retained of each player’s complete account history, and accounts that are frequently involved in violations of the Rules of Conduct and/or the Guild Wars 2 User Agreement (the “User Agreement”) are subject to termination”.
From reading this document I gather you must have gained a large number of infractions and very long suspensions, one right after another. Again, if those didn’t teach you to moderate your typing then a bar wouldn’t have either. Also, it’s not cursing on game that gets people in trouble so much as cursing and abusing other players.

I disagree. You shouldn’t be doing anything that would cause infractions in the first place.
My opinion is:
Why we have a profanity Filter in 1st place? im no ok whit this kind of ban, I know Bad words have to be maybe infracted, But IP banned? i think is to much. Also is no good for Anet’s popularity.
Maybe some day you will learn that using bad words in the internet is not as cool as you think it is.

Yet it creates a pleasant in game experience because people can read map-chat without having to scroll through potty mouth spam.
Filter /= license

Accounts don’t get an IP ban for just cussing. To get an IP ban means botting or cheating was going on.
I have a lot of problems with this whole thing, I just cannot believe anyone would waste their time with an IP ban. An IP ban only works if you have a static IP, which very few actual users would have. On top of that, all anyone would have to do is call their ISP and ask for a new IP, so I do not believe there is an actual IP ban, support (I would hope) is smarter then that.
And finally, a perma ban for chat abuse? You must have REALLY gone over board on a number of occasions, if you do not examine your online behavior, it’s very doubtful you will make it in any online game.
Why did you behave like that in the first place? I mean we act like total idiots in guild chat as it’s private and all but we usually keep it clean in say or map chat.
Sorry for your loss but it seems you brought this down on yourself.

A perma ban is not appropriate for someone who is doing no damage to the game itself.
It would of been fairer to have been permanently muted since I was still psychically playing the game like anyone else, and no I would never cheat or bot…I specifically when out of my way to report them when I use to play runescape, that sort of thing really bothers me.

It doesn’t matter if you think it is unfair. Those are the rules you agreed to play by. If you got a suspension for violating the rules that should have been more than enough warning that what you were doing was not acceptable. If you disagreed with that tough luck. If you continued such behavior after a suspension again tough luck because you were warned.
If you feel you wasted 5 years of your life over a game then I don’t necessarily see being banned as a bad thing. Now you have so much more of your life to experience than toiling over a video game.

I’m most likely gonna settle on The Elder Scrolls Online I would just remain here if given another chance but that will never happen.

Also again…..gem sales. banning people who are not harming the game will hurt it in the long run…I myself was planning to continue buying them and I would want them to avoid anything that could potentially hurt them knowing if the profits start sliding they may meet the same fate as City of Heroes in the near or far future.
Well anyway I’m sort of beating a dead horse here I know even if I promised to purchase a million gems every year for the rest of my life they would still rather keep me out…I’m sure they may one day begin to consider giving anyone else another chance sometime in the future but just not me.
Dear Sonicwhip,
I am under the strong impression you are not truthfull here. I will explain the reasons. You are complaining bout an IP-ban and taking a big ‘I am the victum’ role on you. You keep reacting to people who are commenting on your suggestion. But you do not react to the fact that your story just doesn’t add up!
An IP-ban is a very very heavy meassure that is not taken by Arenanet unless you (or in this case your claiming your brother) did things that are extremely wrong. I’m not talking ow he called someone lesbian wrong. I’m talking bout being a thread to the game and the community wrong. Massive botting, Hacking cheating, RMT-ing and morelikely all of that then just one thing.
As a brother you should take more responsability.
You are asking for a second change and you will get one (assuming your personal account has never been used for bad things). That is to throw your borther out of the house (or if your living with your parents to move out yourself), taking distance from him and what he does. And take up a new internetconenction and a new associated IP-adress. If you follow the rules and your brother isn’t using that same IP-adress Arenanet will have no trouble with it at all.
As for your suggestion itself. This is a bad plan for the simple reason that there are bad people (like your brother) who do anything to cheat. They even make caluclations bout how many accounts they have to hack. Giving them ways of tracking how long a hacked account for example is usable makes them utilize these numbers in their advantage to plot bad things. Besides that, there shouldnt be an amount of times you can break the rules, you jsut dont break the rules. The fact that people are given a second, third, fourth, etc. change isn’t a right. Nobody has the right to break the rules.
Arise, opressed of Tyria!

If you ask any Anet employee they will tell you my permanent ban was for 100% chat related incidents only.
Edit: I meant that suggestion only for people doing minor things like inappropriate language. someone who is a hacker should get an automatic perma ban.
No offense but I remember your name.
A little while ago, maybe a week, you posted about your ban. I was unable to read it becaise every second letter was kitten. It was quickly deleted, which everyone commemted in knew it would be and all felt that you were probably banned for good reason.
Its good to see you with a more respectful tone, but the problem is it is too late.
I wish you good luck in your gaming and hopefully a lessoned learned.

I wrote that minutes after finding out I was permanent banned, it was in the moment.
again I did not attempt to bypass the filter.
You can argue your point all you want and say you shouldn’t be banned, but even though I don’t work at ArenaNet I can pretty much guarantee your ban will not be reversed. It might be time to find a game where you can behave as you wish without penalty, and I’m guessing you will find a lot of like-minded players in that game, whatever it may be.

I think that game is called Solitaire

Or a single player game like Skyrim. And I am being serious here. OP seems to have problems with self control where other online players are involved and would probably do better with this sort of game.
I was thinking more like a multiplayer game where you can control who you play with/against, sort of like a co-op game where there are several players. Left 4 Dead 2 is one such game, but I’m sure there are many more. Chat is restricted to those in the game instance, and some of those games will likely have voice chat that is limited to the participants. People can say what they want without any penalties, if the right game is chosen, aside from possibly annoying the other players who can hear/see the chat.

Anet understands that sometimes people say things that aren’t meant to be offensive, but some people take offense to.
“(Homonym for a structure that holds water), that nppc really hits hard!” for example.
That’s the kind of thing the filter is meant for.
And Anet really does IP bans? That’s kind of… old fashioned/likely to hurt an innocent, it would seem to me (considering how some places will cycle through IPs)

I have been permanently I.P banned(friend tried logging in his account on my computer) for saying bad words in the in game map chat.
-snip-
First, I don’t know what you mean by saying “IP banned.” We terminate (ban) accounts, and we suspend accounts (give a time-out) but I’ve never head of us IP blocking. I am quite sure we do NOT do that.
I understand that you regret that your language incidents resulted in an account termination. I cannot remember this happening in Guild Wars 2 before, but looking at the logged chat, it was bad in many different ways, and those offenses took place over the course of many months.
We’re pretty clear about our expectations, and the escalating system usually makes it clear that we’re serious about not having offensive language in the game. (You can read about that here: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/legal/guild-wars-2-conduct-breaches-outcomes/ So as I said, it’s not common for someone to get a second chat violation, and really unusual for someone to keep racking them up.
Nothing to be done about this. The account termination is in conformance with our Rules of Conduct and User Agreement.
