I just bought GW2 and I am trying to play with my friend and the game is telling me I can’t play on his server. How can I resolve this and play with my friend.

You can:
Ask your friend to transfer to a server that is not full, so you both can have accounts there.
Wait until the server is not full. (This could be quite a wait.)
Create a character on a different server, and guest to his/her server. (You will not be able to take part in WvW while guesting, but all other parts of the game are available to you.)

Transfers either cost gems (the amount is determined by the population of the server) or one can delete all current characters and transfer the account at no cost.

You will have to wait till a spot opens up. Or start playing on a different server and pay for a move with gems or delete your chars when there is room on the other server and move for free.

Or your friend moves with the above options

Your server of choice may not drop from Full until ArenaNet increases the server population cap again. The game’s price was just recently lowered; this may (and hopefully will) cause a substantial increase in accounts, and server population caps may be increased again in the near future. Remember, you can always create an account elsewhere, and guest to Blackgate. =)

I play on Blackgate, it’s mostly a US server so population dips quite a bit at night and early in the morning. You might want to give it a try when you wake up or maybe late night before bed.

Server Population is really a Current Load indicator.

Son is trying to get account on Blackgate to participate in WVW.

Question for ArenaNet: Does the initial home world select screen update population automatically?

New account logging in for the first time and have to select our home world. Will the population change while the home world selection screen is up or will I need to restart the client to see an update of the servers population status?

You don’t have to restart the client to see changes, but you do have to close and re-open the World Selection screen. I log in at all hours of the day and night, and I have not seen Blackgate move off full since it became so, this time. If it does change to Very High, it must be at that state for only a few moments. We may see a server cap increase, some time in the foreseeable future, as more servers are becoming Full, again.

But, hey! There are many servers that would welcome your son, or anyone else, into their WvW community! =)

If a sever is not selected at character creation the only available option is cancel on world selection screen. Cancel in effect restarts the client. I’m hoping for an anet answer about this since my goal is to be able to leave the home world selection screen open and watch for an opening to join a full server.

Have tried on Blackgate at all hours and nothing. Every other MMPOG I have seen allows for more than one server. Basically, I can build a character on a server other than my friends’ and play there, and IF there is ever an opening, kill that character off and start over in the small time there is an opening if I am lucky.

That is not much of a solution. I am kinda sorry I spent the money. At least we did not waste another $50 for the wife.

You are allowed to be on multiple servers. Guesting allows you to interact with people on servers other than your home world. But if you wish to WvW on another server, you just have to pay the Gems to transfer. Should you want to represent another server for WvW, you just have to pay more Gems after the wait period is over. A cheaper alternative to this is to delete all your characters, and then you can transfer for free.

If I understand what you are saying, you can do that. You can make a character on a server and then guest to other servers in the same group, North American or Europe. Then if an opening comes up you can transfer for free by deleting your character(s).
