Yes, swearing is not acceptable behavior in this game. If you swear in /map, there’s a good chance you will be reported. You can swear in your guild chat or in whispers to your friends, but if someone reports you there you can be banned as well. It’s all in the ToS and EULA agreements that you agreed to before playing – standard agreements found in other games as well, just that the agreements are being upheld here.

? so can you not turn it off in map chat pretty sure its an option if your still wet behind the ears?

I’m kinda sure that would fall under #1 under the TOS. No matter if they have filters turned on or off. If you don’t want to get banned try keeping what you say clean. I’m not being mean or anything but we all got to watch what we say.
TOS #1)
While playing Guild Wars 2, you must respect the rights of others and their rights to play and enjoy the Game. To this end, you may not defraud, harass, threaten, embarrass or cause distress and/or unwanted attention to other players. This includes posting insulting, offensive, or abusive comments about players, repeatedly sending unwanted messages, reporting players maliciously, attacking a player based on race, sexual orientation, religion, heritage, etc. Hate speech is not tolerated.

The ban was justified. Just because there’s an option to turn it on or off doesn’t mean I have to. There is a ToS for a reason. If you can’t follow it, maybe you should go play a different game.

sorry dont agree at all there was no hate speech and didnt make it unenjoyable for anyone except for those who had debate in map chat about the election for over 45 minutes while people are trying to join runs is it ok to sit there and spam a debate about the election in map chat for that amount of time if they can ban me well I guess whats fair is fair and those people that were involved should be banned as well but i can promise you it was all one sided yep darn sure.

Did you ever consider that this filter isn’t of much use for people that don’t speak English? I turned it off, because sometimes that filter shows —- for perfectly normal words or names in my language. Just that there is a filter is no reason to swear in a chat. You are not the only one around, and English is not the only language spoken in map chat! It is not to you to say that people can ‘turn that filter on’ because you can’t behave yourself

This has been clearly explained by ArenaNet staff on more than one occasion, too. You say there’s a reason that there is a filter, as though you put it in the game yourself. Always assume that local and map chat has kids, and act accordingly and respectably.

You could just have blocked the user talking about election and moved on. There still no reason for swearing within game. Only result that could come from doing so is someone reporting you. Which someone did of course and you found your self with a 72 hour ban.
Again I’m not being mean or anything at all. Just block them if you don’t like what they are posting. Really no since to get your self banned over something that could been voided in the first place.

They did add the feature for a reason, but its not the reason you thought. The filter is an extra layer of protection, not the only layer of protection.

The devs are pretty reasonable about what is said in the different channels. If you had a one-off swear at something (not directed at anyone in particular), that would not have earned you the suspension. From the sound of it, you had an entire litter of kittens happening, which is not acceptable and earned you the vacation.

Profanity is still not acceptable in GW2, I try not to say or use any information that could be used against me. I’d advise to be more careful about your wording.

I remember when people were saying that GW2 was going to be the “wild west” of language and bad behavior, but it’s turned out to be maybe the “cleanest” game out right now.
This is glaring if you log in to any of the other titles after a month of GW2. I’ve played MMOs since the 1990s and apparently had gotten desensitized to the trolling, insults, and profanity. But when I logged in to my old game recently to make sure my mailbox was empty it was amazing to see what I had been tolerating.
I sent some sign-off messages to old friends and reminded them to behave if they come to GW2.

ArenaNet have got a good amount of things wrong with this game, but one thing where they did right was to ensure and promote a good community.

Well i think if they made a server for 18+ only server that would eliminate all this nonsense plain and simple. Some of us can handle a little swearing or joking in a harsh way some can’t. It’s just like call of dutys series you have parents who let there 5 year old children play a Rated M game take and section off the 18+ people no issues how hard would it be to label a 18+ server.

Doesnt matter how you or anyone else justifies an immature attitude. You are playing ArenaNets game, and you follow their rules, or meet their punishments.
And before you try to mock me, i couldn’t care less what people say in game. As far as i’m concerned, you can say whatever you like around me, within reason. However, that doesnt change the fact that it’s still arenanets game and rules.

ArenaNet Communications Manager
We’re not going to make the Potty Mouth Server. There are rules, and you agreed to them when you joined the game. You disagree with the rules, but your playing on our private servers, and we intend to keep the game world pleasant for our players.
A server can have all sorts of things happen, and political chat is one of them. Move on and ignore and you’re fine. But offensive language has nastier outfalls, and it’s not allowed.
So, yes, you can swear. No, you may not. And if you do, and if it is seen or reported, action will be taken. That’s not a ban that is a suspension. Please make better choices in the future.
