best statistical loot in the game. We want everyone on equal power base.”

Hi, after suddenly two of the same opponent realm’s keep lords bugged out and turned invulnerable, which was kinda suspicious, this encounter just happened to me:
Now the thing is I’m an elementalist, decked in green+yellow level 80 items that max power/precision/crit damage stats, and also have fire+air traits maxed, so my damage is basically the maximum possible attainable. Together with this I use arcane shield and mist form to negate the downside of being a glass cannon somewhat. Rare items certainly have “better” stats than greens, but only by a few points really (like +2 more power on a piece of armour etc), so maybe the damage output could be increased by a bit further, but not really doubled or anything. Or so I thought, because this just happened to me:
I was hit by an elementalist’s Chain Lightning for 6.1k damage. My own chain lightning hits for around 1.4k and crits for maybe 2.2k or something around that number.
So I was wondering how it was possible that this opponent elementalist apparently deals 250% of the damage I deal?
Mind you this is the first time this happened to me, although I’ve been playing WvW a lot, but this really made me suspicious. Even if he was decked in all orange items I suppose they could not possibly increase your damage by a factor of 2.5?

Just test it at the pvp playground. There you have maxed gear.
Antiriad is correct though, even with me having maxed out damage and Exotic Level 70 gear, along with maxed out Exquisite Ruby Orrian Accessories, my damage is approx 2000-3000, I don’t really understand how he could have dealt 6000 damage to you without using a Bolt; even then, very iffy. I have a 45% crit chance with a ton of +% Crit Damage.
do you have some kind of debuff on you?
do you have some kind of debuff on you?
Combat log doesn’t show debuffs so I can’t check, fight was over almost instantly basically (he hit for another > 6k with Lightning Strike, together with that Chain Lightning) so I couldn’t really see anything apart from checking the combat log afterwards.
Is there actually a debuff that could have caused this? (I only know of those 4-10% vulnerability debuffs out of my head right now.)
Btw on a side note for those who are not familiar with elementalist: Chain Lightning is the staff’s auto-attack skill (ie first skill).

facepalmed at the part about having basically maxed out gear in greens and yellows… LOL
the other elementalist probably has all exotic gear and exotic upgrades in all his gear.
exotic = dark orange
normal(white) < magic (blue) < green (masterwork) < rare (yellow) < exotic (dark orange) = mystic(?) = legendary (purple)
You don’t have anywhere near maxed out gear if you’re still in greens… The numbers may not seem that big but they make a big difference.
Also, I seem to do way more damage in WvW than in PvE. So that might be contributing.
He could also have 450 more power from food + stacks of bloodlust. So there’s that.
Edit: Toss in a bunch of might stacks, up to 25% more damage from vuln on you, and it’s probably possible.

Chiming in here, with full level 80 T3 gear + best possible gear combinations/traits/food etc, I highly doubt gaining 25% more damage is even possible at this stage of the game, if your doing 2.1k crits and the other person hit you for 6.1k, that is a huge difference in damage.
Exotic gear isn’t that much better than rare gear, certainly if that player was fully decked out in T3 that player would definitely do more damage, but shouldn’t practically double nearly triple the damage output so those numbers your quoting, something is also iffy about that.
Edit *Also, pie ~ What your saying is feasible but highly unlikely – that would require very careful planning, the best food available etc.. I highly doubt that would happen this early after launch, you might fight something like that in sPvP in the near future but I still highly doubt it right now.

Did some math. At 80, an ele with full exotic berserker gear, using a staff, has the following advantages over one with equivalent Masterwork gear (using Exquisite Ruby Orbs in the exotic gear, the 65 green ruby gems in the masterwork):
165 more defense
185.5 more average weapon strength
275 more power
20% more crit damage
Add in 250 power for bloodlust, and 200 power and 10% crit damage from a truffle steak dinner, and that puts him at ~910 more attack and 30% more crit damage. A single guardian with a staff could add 12 stacks of might for another 420 power. 25 stacks of might would add 875. A banner of discipline could give him another 10% crit damage, and 25 stacks of vuln would add 25% damage.
Of course it’s unlikely that all of this happened. But it’s really pretty easy for a lot of it to have happened. The gear, bloodlust, and food are all mostly passive, and all it would take for the rest would be a few coordinated players. It’s not nearly as unlikely as you seem to think.
Example: One ele as described above, one guardian, one rifle warrior. Guardian uses Empower, warrior uses for great justice and banner of disciplines into a fire field created by the ele, then uses on my mark and brutal shot. Ele now has 18 stacks of might and +10% critical damage, target has 15 stacks of vulnerability. It’s entirely possible this could even happen accidentally.
It’s a lot of damage, sure. But I really don’t think it’s a bug.
