I noted that the airship parts that are found in cargo boxes did not go into my packs, now I find that they are a kind of currency. So, what gives???

they go straight into the wallet. to check how many you have open your inventory and click on the coin icon at the bottom left. or just look beside your gold amount when in Verdant Brink.
