The last 5 times I’ve logged into the game from the launcher, it has immediately thrown me onto the character on my first slot without me choosing. Can you please fix this? It gets annoying that I have to wait for the game to load before I have to go to the character select screen to change out to the character of my choice.

You might try a -repair of the client. You can find instructions in the Knowledge Base accessed through Services/Support at the top of the page.

If that does not alleviate the issue, you would need to post in the Tech Support sub-forum or contact Tech CS for assistance, as posting in the Game Bugs sub-forum won’t give you personalized service.

OP, what could be happening is, if you dewindow while it loads the character select screen, or have a chat window or somesuch over the game while it loads, and you’re typing, GW2 will force you to rewindow when the character select screen finishes loading. It also accepts a wide variety of of keypresses as “yes I want to play this character.”

I have MANY times tabbed to an IM window to talk to someone while waiting for the character select screen to load and ended up loading into the wrong character because while I was in the middle of typing, GW2 put itself back over the IM window and then went “Oh, you pushed the space bar! YES! I will load the character you requested!”

If you aren’t typing, however… then I have no idea.

It’s not consistent. There are a couple of unlucky accidents that have to happen in a row for you to pop into a specific character. There are a couple of ways to work around it:

1. turn off auto-play — takes longer to get into the game when you alt-tab back.
2. use the -autologin command line argument — this skips the 5s timer in auto-play, which is good if (a) you are as impatient as I am and (b) you don’t share your computer with anyone else (since you have to store your email+password in plain text).
