They can no longer be interact with (or rather there is no one next to them to interact with), hence they can’t be used to fill the Karma NPC’s heart.
P.S. Why is it that with each update on this map there are always more bugs then before, or so it seems?

Because bugs are an invasive insect and once you thought you killed them in one place, they actually just moved to another.
