Back Items Without Level Requirements Only Take Tier 1 Gems
I have the opposite problem! I bought the guild assassin backpack for 5 gold and I have applied an upgrade to the unused slot. My other character just got the strong back brace from personal story, but only the tier 1 gems can be applied. I meet the level requirement for the higher tier gems so why can’t I use them?
You can’t slot a gem that is higher level than the backpack
Don’t know if it’s working as intended or an oversight, but the Mad Memoires:Complete Edition item from the second path of the scavenger hunt does not accept either the rare Orbs nor the Exquisite Jewels.
It does accept the tier 1 pebbles though.
I ask in case since it has the same stat range of the spineguards gotten from the personal story and those do accept the exquisite jewelry.
I’m having the same problem. If this is intended that sucks, because it makes the Mad Memoires: Complete Edition from Act 2 pointless (other than being purely ascetic) because I can put a good upgrade in my other back piece that has the same base states.
I noticed this also, I hope it is a bug
Okay so I found a way around the bug… just use a transmutation stone on it, but I’m not sure if you need the item later so I have yet to do it.
(I think whats causing the bug is the special text in the books description this replaces the text which makes it work)

The completed book doesn’t have a level. Trinkets without a level only allow pebbles.
So, it’s behaving consistently with other items (including the P-story back-trinket you get midway through the storyline.) Did ANet intend for this to be an L0 item? Perhaps they want the only high-level back item to be from the personal story. (However, it would be nice if they made it something like L55, since that’s the recommended level required to get the 12th memoire.)

True, but then why does it have around the same stats as the level 80 personal story back brace?
Not trying to be mean , just curious on it all. I did expect it from the first back book due to it being blue and quite noticeably low stats, but having the green one aswell ,which matches stats is kinda “odd” , hence the bug report to see their stance.
Personally though, id wish there were more way to get different back slot items save for personal story or guild one , since i don’t want to spend 5g on an extra 2 stats :p.
I just bought a Guild Backpack and I can’t upgrade it with any Jewel. The issue is the same with my Mad Memories: Complete Edition. My Mad Memories (Act 1 edition) is upgraded with Exquisite Coral Jewel (transmuted) and can still be upgraded, so I know something is wrong.

It would be nice to know if this is intended or not. I could just transmute the skin but then I would lose the flavor-text. And I don’t know if it is still needed somehow when the event goes on.
Is this working as intended? I am too lazy to do story for a back piece so I am using the Mad Memoires but I cannot socket it with an exquisite emerald jewel or emerald orb.
I am also having the same issue.
My guess is that because the item doesn’t have a level requirement it’s behaving like the backpack item you get early in your personal story questline and will only take a tier 1 gem (without fillament). Hardly worth slotting one…and I hope they find a way to fix that so it will take any gem/jewel up to the character’s level.
The Book has no level requirement limiting it to only accepting +3 stat items. Makes it pretty useless.
Shadow of the Mad King backpack Mad Memories: Completion Edition – Unable to put any type of Jewels into it.
I do not know if this is a bug or just how it is, but it says it has a slot but unable to put anything in the slot
Also having the same issue. Tried everything, all levels and qualities of jewels, mars and talismans and NOTHING seems to be working along with the item !
The second book (i haven’t tried on the first one) has an unused upgrade slot that i can’t fill with a jewel nor an orb, even though my previous equipment is filled with an exquisite coral jewel.
really really annoying bug right here. please fix this, i really don’t want to buy a lvl 60 backslot item …
Hi All,
i have just reported this issue as in-game ticket too.
The problem is that i cannot upgrade with a LVL80 exotic gem the “Mad Memoires” backpack. I presume that the reason is that the item has not level requirements and the gem does. Normally the upgrade cannot be more powerful than the item, so…
I believe that in this case the general rule can be removed, im i right?
Otherwise i have a problem because i have deleted the personal-story reward backpack.
Thanks for your attention,
Bye,
M

I personally had guild backpack with appropriate ruby and just transmuted it with the book. You might be able to tackle it this way?
Is anet going to fix this or remain the same?
As noted above, the item doesn’t have a level of its own, which means you can only upgrade it with the simplest items (pebbles). However, like any skin, you can transmute it onto the back trinket-item from the guild armorer or the one you get from your personal story.
