Black Screen
It would be helpful if you posted a hardware spec for someone to debug against.
In the last couple of days my screen flickers from time to time or goes totally black requiring to restart game (while other applications work fine, also ambient , battle sound and music, work fine they are not on a infinite loop). My friends see me as offline after this (even though i can hear anything that happens near my character).
This happens to me and a some other people and i don’t know yet if it’s patch (arenanet) related or due to last AMD/ATI driver update (i have a AMD videocard but never had problems with it before while playing gw2 and it doesn’t happen in other games) which pretty much was in the same time frame.
Anyone else having this problem ? I will try to revert to previous drivers and update this topic if i see any changes in behaviour.
Hello,
So I started getting this issue since a week or two, even though I did not change anything to my computer or internet.
I am getting a black screen while playing GW2 every 15m or so, though I can still see the cursor and hear the music play, thus having to restart my game.
Maybe unrelated, but I am also getting errors that the game cannot connect to the log-in server (but these do not kick me out of the game, can just continue playing).
Anyone know how to fix this?
Regards,
I have this problem!
Have you tried updating your video card drivers? If you have Nvidia, please go to their website and download the latest version.. same if you have an AMD card.
I just read another post where a user was having this same issue, but did not say whether they had a Nvidia card or AMD card.
Are you sure the drivers you are using are official drivers and not unsigned beta release drivers?
hi all im new to the game, and my problem is as follows…
I will log in as normal, play for roughly 5-10mins and the game just goes black all i can see it my in game cursor nothing else. i have to alt f4 to close the game i relaunch and it does the same thing… some days are worse than others, it works perfect but other days… well yeah
cheers heaps for any help!!
Same here. It started happening for me sometime in mid-December and I haven’t been able to play since.

I found the solution for the black screen (at least for me). It seems that routers (Netgear/D-Link/Asus) cause issues when they have port scan and ddos protection enabled.

Thank you, Nosis Tarunda, for posting that information and for finding several threads that could be merged so that everyone gets this valuable tip.

Gotto throw my info in on this.
I don’t get a constant black screen in fact it’s rare, but it’s brutal. It’s a GPU driver crash, ctrl-alt-delete doesn’t always work which means I have to either alt-tab or restart.
Once it crashed Firefox but not STEAM or Office 2013. It’s possible that Firefox is the cause or at least increases the risk. As it seems to have happened after alt-tabbing back in after reading the wiki.

This is not a router issue. I’ve got GW2 installed on 2 different PCs running through the same router. The game runs fine on my 6 year old PC. I get frequent stuttering and crashes on my 2 month old PC.
I’d been on a break from GW2 since buying the new PC and just started playing again 6 days ago. The first few days I only experienced the stuttering and only maybe once per hour. Then last night while playing with a friend I had 4 crashes within a single hour. After the 4th crash I rebooted my PC and that seemed to clear up the crashes, but I still encountered stuttering one more time.
Oddly, I split my time about 50/50 between PvE and WvW and I don’t remember having any of these problems in WvW. Even while running w/the WvW zerg.
My new PC’s stats:
i5-4690 Haswell
16 GB RAM
GTX-660 2GB – latest drivers & optimized to run GW2 using nVidia’s suggested settings
Samsung Magician SSD
750W power supply
I will look for a crash/error log tonight and post what I find.
does that black screen come with sound loop too (also driver error) ? if yes that it may be signal that your gcard has problem with power management, which may sooner or later cause death of the card..
it happened to me few weeks ago when one of the black screen crashes end up with permanent card death.. in my case it was gigabyte 66TOC (geforce 660 ti oc)
My mobo – an MSI Z97-G45 – uses Qualcomm’s Killer Network Manager to manage bandwidth usage. I disabled that and it seems to have fixed my problem.
+1
I’ve been getting a black screen on every single one of my house’s computers, all with different cards.
My main PC uses a Radeon 290x, suffers no overheating issue at all, I can run every game fine (i.e Rome 2 Total War “Ultra”, Crisis 3… any game but this one) except GW2, I’ve had this issue since the beginning of 2014, and so have my friends.
This is pitiful.
Edit: spellling
Hi, I changed my screen resolution while in game and the screen goes black since. Any way of resetting without going into the game? Right now when I start game I can hear sound but no screen. Plz help

When the game starts press alt+enter key. That should force it to window mode or viceversa.
You mean this problem? I’m getting it too now, after the most recent patch.
Looks like there are multiple “Black Screen” bugs. One of them being a game render issue, the other being some kind of network issue.
Smartcat, it looks like you might have a problem with the new streaming option. Try disabling the streaming option in settings.

Thank you Echo. This seems to have fixed it (well it hasn’t happened again since changing the settings).
