Bug - Getting stuck "in combat" for extended periods of time for no reason
I feel I should add that this seems to be proximity based.
As in…I can stand in the same area for minutes without being attacked yet still “in combat”, yet when I do move on eventually combat will end.
I play a thief as well and this happens to also it most likely has to do when we stealth
So I am tearing out my hair about this bug or feature or whatever it is. I play a thief and I use a lot of evasion and stealth to get around the map so that I can pick my fights. I’ve noticed it before, but now that I am in Orr it is beyond frustrating. Several mobs tag me on the way to where I want to be, but I teleport away and then pop stealth to drop aggro. Many times, however, I find this doesn’t actually get me out of combat. I stand around, waiting for my health to refill and it doesn’t happen, even though nothing in the immediate area is looking at me funny. I try to engage a nearby mob hoping to reset it, but that doesn’t work. I can’t figure out what causes me to remain in combat some times and not others.
It doesn’t happen all the time, but often enough that I get extremely frustrated when I go to Orr. The worst, absolute worst, is when I fight/stealth my way to a node I want, and then can’t change from my mithril pick to the ori one because I am in combat. This is affecting my ability to chose my fights. If I arrive at my objective, I am already kittened from the start. I can’t engage the veteran or whatever until I use my heal a couple of times to fill up if needed and wait for the recharge and then just hope that no other mobs find me before I am ready to actually fight.
So frustrating.
eta: lol! They have a really aggressive kitten filter. That’s kind of awesome.

I agree, I have only played my Thief, so I do not know if this happens to other professions. But I am constantly getting stuck in combat. I have a stealth/back stab build based on crit damage. Mobs run from me when I go into stealth, yet I get all my damage from stealth attacks from behind or the side. I also am cursed with being stuck in combat on a regular basis. These mobs run away from me, but yet, I am still in combat. Two things to fix.
1. Mobs running faster than usual to get back to their start location so you can not backstab. Too many mobs act like robots on reset. The AI seems to be obscure when dealing with stealth actions.
2. After being in stealth, not being able to get out of combat.
These particulars, make the thief frustrating.
It happens to everyone, very annoying. I’m a bit surprised there isn’t a lot of complains about it though.
I just relog(go back to character screen, then log back in) to fix it when it happens.
Other alternative to fix it is to put your weapons away (there’s a keybinding in the Options window, but by default it’s not set to anything). Once you have no weapons out and are not under a condition/taking damage it seems to reset.
Pet AI awful. Sword root+Aussie latency unmanagable. Lost playstyle, lost legendary, given up.

Yea if mob is close to you even not attacking, you stay in combat. Char-select solves but meh.

Definitely a problem since the last patch. Game seems to be accruing bugs instead of shedding them since launch. This one is particularly annoying if you’ve run past a mob on your way to a vista. You cannot get the vista unless you log out and back in. Even if your weopons time out and get put away, you’re still labelled as “in combat” and cannot view the vista or switch out weapons. I’ve had this happen in some really odd places as well.

I just came here to post that I was having this problem last night as well – it can be very frustrating. Bumping in hopes of a bump in priority – I’m sure Anet has their hands full.
I constantly become stuck in combat in WvW long after I have stopped fighting and can not move at full speed. Has anyone else been having this problem?
Playing necromancer with dag/foc + wells, no conditions
I have this problem with my thief all the time. It pretty much kills the entire “pick your battles” side of the class dead.
I realize that a mob needs to be considered “in combat” for a few seconds after you stealth so that their health doesn’t just reset when you’re winding up for a backstab, but this is just stupid.
i play a necro and this happens to me as well.mobs would be chasing me then i run on top of a rock where they cant reach and i would be stuck in combat mode forever.logging out fixes this but its still annoying
It seems to be happening more and more often: being stuck in combat. It makes it impossible to heal yourself, to swap weapons, to change skills, to adept your combat style for the fight… and so on.
Usually it can be fixed by killing a mob or walking further but this is sometimes not possible. Like after killing a group of mobs, being on low hp and running to safety you get stuck in combat. No way to go: out of your safespot are mobs, you don’t regenerate health and you can not teleport to safety. Logging out resets sigil stacks, mantra’s and the consumable with the wrench icon.
And today I noticed a new upgrade to this bug: being stuck in combat and killing a mob used to get you out of combat, but that didn’t happen today. I killed 2-3mobs in a row trying to get myself out of combat, but nothing happened.
They need a better way to stop auto-attack, it you need to be able to toggle it off, the option where is suppose to stop when you switch targets doesn’t seem to work, or at least last time checked.
This has been happening to me for a long time, I just always thought it was probably me doing something wrong somehow.
I play a thief too and when this happens I tried everything listed above. Go in stealth to try to drop aggro, defeat a random nearby mob to try to drop it, run away and more stuff, it all doesn’t though.
It’s especially annoying when you want to travel to a way point for instance but you can’t because it says you’re on combat…
Today it REALLY pissed me off though as I tried to get in the halloween jumping puzzle map but couldn’t enter the stupid portal after defeating the keeper of waves because apparently, I was in combat. Before I could get out of it (after like 2 minutes) the portal had already disappeared…
It also annoyed me in boss fights or any other strong creature. What would happen is I would go in hiding as my health depleted just to regain a little and the enemy took like 3 seconds to get out of combat mode and auto-regenerate most of his health. Why do the monsters go in regeneration mode after 3 seconds while I have to wait several minutes to get out of combat mode?
PLEASE fix this, it has made me rage more than once in this game.
This happens to me often when I manage to evade a mob by running, the game does not seem to recognise that I am out of combat and usually killing something fixes it.
I notice it mostly in multi-layered areas. It seems the Z axis isn’t always accounted for when calculating distance.
