Bug or Misunderstanding? Contribution for World Events
Honestly, there’s no telling what’s going on with contribution. I’ve seen weird occurrences like you’ve listed. I come in at the end, as a guardian, do one ability and get a gold medal. However, I can be around for a world event like a boss, do damage the entire time and forsake getting others up because it takes too much time, and I’ll receive nothing. No medal at all.
If you say something about not getting credit for a boss kill, you’ll often get told, “Do damage.” I’m sorry, but that’s not what I want to do. I want to support my allies, but ANet’s contribution system does not reward that gameplay. I know there’s no holy trinity in this game (supposedly), but if that were actually true, there wouldn’t be a healing stat.
I submitted a feedback ticket about this issue and was responded to with, “Post this on Twitter, Facebook, etc.” It was adorable considering I’m not sure things like this will get much attention. Too many players assume the system is golden and doesn’t require work, but it does. Otherwise, players who like to play as a support character or even a tanking character will find another game to play. Probably one that rewards them for doing a role and doing it well.
Sometimes I think that less you in event – bigger award you get. In 90% times :S

Maybe it calculate your involvement with time as one of factors in a way that your dmg, heal or whatever you were doing is extended over that time. That’s why it works this way. I found it weird too. There were even times when I received gold medal but didn’t remember to participate in any event at that time. Probably I run through some and didn’t noticed it.
Is this a known bug, an unknown one, or am I misunderstanding something?

oh, i’ve noticed this as well. what was interesting to me was running the assault on the dome of svanir on both my guardian and my elementalist. nothing above silver, on either of them, and i couldn’t heal/support on the ele without getting only a bronze. so if my playstyle includes supporting or helping, i feel like i’m being penalized. on my guardian, i was MORE often able to get silver on that event, and gold on the rest, even tossing out some support, but i think that’s because the guardian’s support style ALSO has lots of damage included in it, where the ele’s water attunement just … doesn’t. food for thought, this probably SHOULD be looked at. if we’re contributing, whether in support, or rezzing folk, or doing damage, our participation should be reckoned with that in mind.
additionally? keep in mind that on my ranger, i almost consistently get gold, no matter what, except in the svanir event. that one for her has been consistently silver. oh, and also? flat ground, nothing in front of my ranger but her bear’s wide butt, and she’s getting obstructions? guys? what’s up with that?
I believe on bosses it goes with what % of total damage you did to the combined event mobs (a world dragon that spawns adds wills till net you gold if you pound on the adds). However, I also noticed that combo fields and conditions on enemies seems to get a lot of credit also. Laying down combo fields seems to net a lot of credit on enemies, in addition it seems to award you credit for each attack through your combo field towards event enemies.
To that end though, if you run around healing and buffing people for an event you will probably get low to no participation. I’ve found the most reliable way so far though, is combo fields, conditions, and damage. They don’t factor in healing yet though.
