First person view. Period. I’m tired of not being able to see what’s going on in tight spaces (jumping, combat, etc), and I’m tired of having my back be a featured element in every single screenshot I take.

Your artwork is beautiful, your map features lavishly detailed… please let us see them.

All I really want out of the camera at this point is first person view. Not for running around normally but for small spaces and taking screen shots.

agreed the camera viewing can be problematic, and when my mouse refuses to grit when turning, it gets annoying, and fighting with the mouse to control jump’s for vistas is a head mess and a half, but that being said, you cant exactl expect the gw1 style controls with the dodging in place(if like me nd use to gw1 style camering for PoV) having to buy a mouse for my ;aptop to play gw2 was a MUST, to ba dmy mouse is cheap and cuts out every few seconds(not all the time though)

This so much. Please please please let us have a first person mode.

Also, the camera’s collision is “sticky” (high friction) and thus gets stuck when it hits anything in the world (most notably annoying when doing vistas and jumping puzzles). Please change the collision to be more like the player character collision that “slides” off of things, as along with a first person mode it would go a long way to making vistas and jumping puzzles less frustrating.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for the feedback! While there hasn’t been an “official” post on this subject until now, I want to assure you all that we are taking your thoughts and concerns into consideration. As one of the previous poster’s noted, we are currently spreading our resources among a large number of issues (account security, game security, etc.) and working towards a point where we can improve the camera functionality.

In the meantime, if you have suggestions or comments on ways we can improve the camera, please keep your feedback concise, constructive, and consolidated to this thread. While we may not reply to every comment, we’re constantly going through the forums and reading your suggestions.

Thanks again!

Thank you for taking the time to read and respond to this topic, and for the great news. Also, for letting us use the Game Bugs forum for essentialy a suggestion thread.

Ability to change FOV would be really awesome. In some cases like dragons fights or Eye of Zaitan fight it gets increased for better viewability by the game and, in the latter fight it gets stuck in that way after the fight is over. Yes, it’s a bug. It gets reset with relogging, but it’s so much more convenient to have it that way, or at least to be able to do that.

One of the key drawbacks of having the FOV at it is now is that we’re missing many of the tall buildings/large structures, since their top parts are completely out of the view. I was shocked, when watching a vista in Cursed Shore it showed me an enormous skyscraper-like building piercing the clouds. I was like “how i couldn’t notice it before”.

The answer was easy, i never looked up near it, because, well it’s hard and a bit pointless with this FOV:)

I would love the ability to move the camera up or down, similar to the option to slide it left or right. As an asura, looking at grass it really exciting, but sometimes I like to know what’s going on in the rest of the world, too!

The major thing for me is the rapid zooming in and zooming out that is extremely awkward. I mean I can understand the camera moving in because of walls and major set pieces like boulders and whatnot. Most of the time, however, it ends up zooming in because I walked past some bump in the ground geometry, or a twig, or a table. Using the camera in CM is a nightmare with all those tight corridors and objects in the scenery. It’s just jumping in and out over and over as I move past the stairways, doorways, and the clutter of objects in each room.

They definitely need to make the camera stick to much less of the objects in the environment, and zoom back out at a steady pace instead of just jumping back out to the first position.

Also this is a minor thing, but don’t make the camera immediately jump to the character as you move the camera to look up. One feature that make’s the camera of World of Warcraft work is that you can look up and around without getting a big fat view of the character’s head. They have a zone where you can move the camera up and it will not move in closer to the character until you move past that zone. Something like 0-45 degrees below horizontal, and the camera would still keep it’s original distance from your character. Guild Wars 2 needs this, especially since so much of the environment art is up above and all around the characters.

Of course I don’t really know as much about it as the original poster, but I do know if it’s been done before it can be done right here. The game is amazing otherwise and I do hope this gets fixed.

Isn’t the problem of FoV related to being able to see to much of the playing field relative to others? Game play might be broken if FoV goes out to far, particularly in PvP. Basically, a wider FoV forces everyone to play with a wider FoV because if you don’t, then those playing wider have an advantage over those that do not.

That’s a flawed argument. To prevent anyone from having an advantage, a game would have to force 800×600 resolution for everyone. It obviously doesn’t, because that would be ridiculous. Don’t forget that GW2 FOV is not standard – it is much lower than any other game on the market. It’s not like I want something extravagant – I want something I got used to playing on the PC during the last decade…

And I’m sorry to put it bluntly, but I don’t really care about someone being at a imaginary disadvantage, when the current, flawed solution gives me migraines each time I try to play for longer than 15 minutes.

Today I did a couple of dungeons and my right mouse camera was constantly getting stuck. I just could not move the right mouse camera, and if it moved it moved for a short distance and then got stuck again. I also kept deselecting my target every time I released the right mouse button.

I don’t want to use the keyboard to turn my character and being able to steer with the mouse is much more enjoyable to me, but this weird glitch is driving me up the wall, I keep dying and kiting is super hard when you can’t occasionally steer your character. The bug seems to happen randomly, in small confined spaces as well as large open areas.

I hope this can be fixed…

No this isn’t a flawed argument, apparently just one you don’t care for.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field_of_view_in_video_games

As you can see, all things being equal a larger FOV DOES allow the user to see more. UNLESS anamorphic scaling is used which then introduces letter boxing. I don’t have a dog in this hunt, but was just making the point that by having various non-anamorphic FOV settings, it might make the game harder for those that prefer lower FOV’s to play, setting them at a disadvantage.

BTW, screen resolution does not let one see more, it only makes the pixels smaller, making the same picture look smoother. However, as the above article shows, Aspect ratios DO have an effect on amount shown. So a 4:3 picture shows less than a 16:9 ratio. It just depends on how the aspect retio is handled.

I understand your frustration in having unhealthy outcomes to playing a game, and I hope for your sake some accommodations can be made. Personally, I’d like to see frame rates faster than 30fps, and closer to 60 fps as these make the game more comfortable for me to play.

Great write up. The game making me nauseous is my worst issue, although the bouncing/stuck camera, especially in PvP is a real problem too. i’ve lost fights simply because I can’t get the camera under control.

In PvE, I have to have a break ever hour or two, for at least half an hour or so, for my stomach to settle again before I can continue playing. Whenever I have to do a Vista, the nausea threshold becomes about 5 minutes, but I still then have to take an hour break to recover. Basically this means I can not even contemplate trying a full on jumping puzzle, as I wouldn’t make it to the end without being physically sick.

WvW is better, I guess due to more standing still sieging, and more flat ground. SPvP is also generally OK, probably due to short matches and not a lot of closed in terrain.

I totally agree, especially the extremely narrow FoV makes me feel sick and I almost feel claustrophobic when being in a Room/House or look at a wall of mountains (like when trying to get a viewpoint). And i have to say i never experienced anything like this in a other game until now.

Also the Camera Orientation is very bad. It has to be possible to make the Camera look “more upwards”, because right now i almost never see the sky and loose all overview when walking in hilly areas.

Please change it, it really is ruining the whole game for me.

So eventually I found myself fighting a huge dragon (minor plot spoiler potential in large pic), I’m sure it’s animated and textured with great detail… and if I actually want to hit it and its minions, all I get on my screen is a foot.

While it’s a nice gesture to include a picture of the boss above its health bar so we don’t forget what the rest of its body looks like, I think this issue would be better solved with better camera controls.

Seriously, a lot of this great art’s just going to waste with players never managing to get a good view of it.

I’d like to sign this.

I find the camera movement HORRIBLE.

I want the screen to stop moving when I stop moving the mouse, not a fraction of a second later.

It’s bearable in PVE, although there have been some things I’ve not been able to do because of it (jumping on pipes and so on) but for PVP it is the worse thing ever. By the time the cameras stopped moving the scenerio has changed and so I’m always a fraction of a second behind what’s going on.

Please AN, fix it. Proper linear control. Don’t make me buy MOP.

Edit – A small addition to the annoyance is that the mouse pointer disappears when using the mouse to turn view angle which means I don’t know where it is when I want to place spells. Please stop it from doing that too.

Another edit: Imagine you are viewing your char from behind, you right click and turn the camera angle, what it doesn’t do is turn your character, so it doesn’t look as if you are looking around. As a 40 man raid leader I take a dim view of not being able to see what my raid are doing or if they’re looking in the wrong direction.

From a social point of view it takes out the “feeling” of playing a person, I’m not explaining this very well I know, but imagine you and your friend are standing around and something really cool happens neither of you actually turn to look at it – I know you are but because (Wrong! you’re) Your(!) character doesn’t turn it takes the realism and social feel and connectedness out. Let me know if you understand what I’m talking about lol.

Dunno if its been said but ability to turn off auto rotating camera on death please.

When I die I like to look around and see if there’s people near me or what my team is doing.

Having the camera auto rotates looking straight down is off putting in making a decision if I should warp out or wait for a rez etc.

Some people may like the downed auto rotate camera but some of us actually still want to see whats going on in the map around us.

Every time I zone, my camera zoom level is reset to a default. I don’t want the default, but I don’t want to re-adjust the zoom after every single load screen.

It seems that this is fairly new, but perhaps it’s been this way for a long time and I’m just now noticing it. It’s most noticeable on my Norn characters, but all characters seem to be suffering from the same issue.

Clearly not a game breaking bug, but annoying nonetheless.

Any commanders desperately need a wide FOV, in wow I zoom out so far I’m a tiny little dot so I can actually command my troops based on what’s going on on the field because when you’re commanding it’s more like playing a strategy game than soul caliber.

The talk about it being game breaking is silly, if they fix it for one, they fix it for all.

A great last point. There was always something bugging me about it but I didno’t know what. To put it simple, LMB should move the camera, RMB should turn the character. What we have now is a sensless mess with tons of improvisation. Free camera? Really?

The game currently has the same camera controls and behaviour that GW1 had. However, GW2 is not a flat, 2d click-to-move hotkey-fest like gw1 was. It’s very much 3d this time, and a lot more movement and action oriented. Notice I didn’t say “positional”. Because gw1 was more about positioning and unloading your skills statically. The same camera just doesn’t work here.

If you read my post, you’d see that changing your resolution already increases your FOV. This is not just a subjective statement, check out the screenshots, which were made without touching the controls in between. Furthermore, people with multi-monitor setups already enjoy the benefits of a wide FoV.
If it was truly gamebreaking, then the game shouldn’t have given people with more than one monitor an unfair advantage, nor to those that cut their vertical resolution intentionally, as I do atm.

I’m playing on a 16:9 22 inch monitor, and one way I’ve found to avoid the nausea headaches was to play in windowed mode and to narrow the screen, both top and bottom by an inch. Not sure what the widowed resolution is but this http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/644/gw008gk.jpg is a full size screenshot.

Also with the cammera predicting movement, it’s very annoying when the cammera goes too far one way, slows down then moves slowly back the opposite way for a bit untill it lines up :s and thats anything upto a couple of seconds AFTER I’ve taken my hand off of the mouse

But at least this game has one good thing going for it, the ground textures are amazing, really highly detailed and all.

Not sure about the rest of the world as you only get to see that via vistas, as inorder to see whats happening infront of you, you have to point the camera down (you can see the angle in the ss), I don’t think I’ve seen the sky/horizon yet in anything other than vistas

(A good way to fix this would be if I could just ‘add’ the 2 inches I’m missing from a full screen image to the horizontal FoV I am playing at to the top, this would give me a horizon and even some sky!)

If you do try and position the camera pointing forwards to get a horizontal view it ends up dragging on the ground and pointing up your toons backside filling the screen with your character

It ended up being a real dissapointment in the Kralkatorrik fight, the limited vertical FoV and wierd camera positioning basically destroys the encounter You want to see the massive dragon you are fighting, but if you angle the camera to see him (pointing up), you get a screen full of your toon and no way of telling if your standing in crap on the floor or have mobs after you as the bottom of the camera view stops just above the waist of your character.

But if you want to see the ground so you can see the warning marks (point camera down/horizontal), you can’t see the head target icon so have no way of knowing if you are inrange, and all you see during the event is it’s feet.

Was left sorely dissapointed in my first dragon fight, leaves you feeling rather depressed about what it’s gonna be like for the other dragons :/

Ahhh this old misnomer. Unfortunatly If you are Rich and can afford to throw a few thousand at computer hardwear upgrades, then you can already have this ‘advantage’ Below are 2 links to the FoV that a single full screen monitor player and a 3-screen Eyefinity player has of a single area.

3-screen Eyefinity setup

Single 16:9 single screen set up

So, to say giving people with only a single screen a greater FoV to stop them from being ill is going to affect pvp, then your very much mistaken.

So if your concerned with people in pvp having an unfair advantage with FoV, shouldn’t you be campaining to have Eyefinity Technology banned from every present and future game that has pvp in it.

Have a nice day

A plea to the community

Before I begin, I’d like everyone who doesn’t have an issue with the current camera and controls to refrain from posting how they don’t have issues. That’s fine and I’m really happy that you can enjoy this otherwise great game. But dismissing the problem does not contribute to the discussion, since the problem is there, with its roots in the camera algorithm. If you don’t experience the problems present now, I assure you that you wouldn’t notice any changes if they were made later on, or if the camera behaved differently to start with. And that’s perfectly ok.

I’m sorry, but I’m going to disagree here. If someone is ok with the actual camera system, but as consequence of your post here, ANet makes changes that he dislikes, then he WILL be negatively affected by your thread. So everybody should be able to voice his opinion in this thread, and not just the people agreeing with you.

I’m personally fine with the camera, but what I noticed is that the “inertia/latency” effect increases on low performance computers, and decreases on higher performance ones. In my personal and professional opinion (of someone making real time graphic software for like 20 years) is that the “problem” is on the graphic engine’s side. It’s not network related, it’s not LCD screen related (all modern LCD screens have a 5ms response time), it’s purely graphic engine related when it’s under heavy load. We can also expect future drivers from both ATI and nVidia to fix this.

NO,

-camera smoothing is a toggle button, you can leave it on smooth

… the “problem” is on the graphic engine’s side….

professional or not, you cannot know what causes the camera inertia unless you see the code. It could also be an issue of a not frame-rate-independent camera smoothing algorithm. If it would be a engine limitation (which i highly doubt) the camera zoom (=camera position) change on wall hits would also be slow, yet they are instant

i cannot understand how anyone can be remotely fine with the current camera. I am constantly fighting the viewport and it never feels right

I edited my post to reflect this. The input lag is performance dependant, and probably the cause of negative acceleration and stuttering, backed up by massive FPS drops when turning.

As for the camera inertia, it’s built into the game as a feature, which should have an option of being turned off, since there is obviously a huge amount of people that dislike that feature. Other camera issues such as the FoV and wonky behaviour are also something that needs addressing.

The plea was put there, since there have been multiple attempts of making a similar topic on gw2guru and reddit, which were effectively ruined by fanboys and people who have no clue what they are talking about. For example, people saying to reinstall the game, or that their gaming mice have features that detect inertia in games and fix them.

Besides all, the downed camera is still need fix. It automatically turns to the ground after being idle for 3-5 sec and too much zoomed into character.

Ok sick and tired of people telling me the reason that (only) the camera causes issues to me in this game is because my computer is wooden.

I was wondering if someone qualified would answer me if I’d be able to play this game with EVERYTHING on low and run it generally smooth with this setup:

Nvidia GeForce 9400GT 1GB RAM, directx 11
Intel® core™ 2 QUAD CPU Q9300 @ 2.5ghz
6.00 GB RAM
Windows 7 ULTIMATE x64

Could my system in anyway possible be the reason im having issues mainly with the smoothing and delay when turning?

Thanks in advance, Ten
ps how come you only find gw MINIMUM REQ’s and not RECOMMENDED? Since minimum is usually the “you wont be able to run it but pls buy anyway” req, and recommended is usually “ah yea, you’ll run it. Go buy” req.. Just wondering since I’m BY FAR able to run this game on minimum req yet it runs like… yea.. someone without legs or sumthin. (dont count fake legs n kitten)

Please dont make me have to support MOP =)

pps LOL at how the censur changes words xD Kitten lol

I really want to enjoy & play this game every night, but the laggy/delayed/acceleration-effected camera controls makes it a chore

I can live with graphical bugs, camera clipping etc, but control over your character is a core part of any game – and if you don’t feel in control or comfortable with the control you have it will just always ruin everything.

I shall struggle and keep playing, but hopefully the camera control is tightened up some point soon so I can devote more time & have more fun <3

Nice post.

The main issue for me is the way that the camera zooms madly in and out all the time. As far as I can tell the system draws an imaginary line back from the middle of your character to where the camera should be. If it comes across anything it thinks is solid along that line then it moves the camera towards the character until it’s in front of the object.

The problem is that pretty much everything in the game counts as a solid object except for small plants and underwater weeds. So if you have a fence which is 90% see-through with a few posts, the camera keeps trying to zoom in when you go past all the posts.

What it needs to do is to ignore these objects and just let them pass between the camera and the character. We don’t need to be able to see our character 100% of the time. As it is sometimes you can get yourself in a position where you just can’t look around, or even up in the air properly without finding your view an inch from your character’s head.

I don’t remember the problem being quite so bad in Beta, so not sure if they’ve changed something, but it seriously needs sorting out.

^ This is my main issue.

In case it helps any in fixing the issue, I use a gtx560Ti and was getting ~40-60 fps on max settings with (max camera speed)and the camera issue was horrible. I put fps cap to 30 and the camera was slightly more responsive.
I put all settings to absolute low capped at 30 fps – camera seems more responsive, but still can not ‘twitch’ gesture.
I have removed fps cap and am playing on absolute lowest settings and the camera delay is a lot less pronounced (sitting at >120fps) – but still noticeable

Face 0°, twitch to the left 90°, mid-movement (at 45° left) twitch right 90°. You would expect to now be facing 45° to the right with a 1:1 camera movement ratio, however due to the camera delay it seems to cancel some of your initial movement and throw you to either 10° to the right or 70° to the right.
(I hope this example actually makes sense/is understandable to more than just me xD)

The camera problems need some work, getting some of the Vista’s can be a right pan when the camera refuses to behave. Thanks for the brilliant post.

Signing every word in opening post. It annoys me to some extent, but a couple of my friends refused to play this game due to camera issue.

Just let the players to turn off all acceleration, smoothing and other modifiers to camera movement.

A a general example of how the camera should response, please take a look at some not very new PC-only shooters. The best example would be Team Fortress 2.

It would be so nice if the devs would go and look at the view and camera of GW1 and then replicate it in GW2. Never happen, though.

In my opinion, replicating the GW1 camera is the prime reason for all of the problems.
Both cameras have inertial panning, narrow FOV, a tendency to focus on the floor, targeting mechanics, and even the bugs I documented on YouTube (see 1st post).
Both cameras turn around your character, both when using LMB and RMB, not directly turning your own character. Both have the “free camera” and “turn 180” keybinds which are an unneccesary leftovers in this day.

The fact is that the camera algorithm worked on a flat, jumpless 2d world in gw1, which also a more static-strategic oriented game compared to GW2, which is trying to be a 3rd person action game.

However, you can’ change the max zoom distance, rebind Space to F, tweak the targeting algorithm and call it a day.

Sorry for not writing as well and eloquent as I should. I’m on vacation and the only thing I have is my smartphone

The sluggish, rubber-band effect is NOT due to the performance of the PC. I run a 680GTX with a 4.4GHz i5-3570K and have excellent gaming performance with every title I run, including GW2. (btw see
www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=gSUu8rt9DiA as linked in the OP – “GW2 camera acceleration” – for the effect.) My GW2 mouse pointer shows normal, minimal lag.

I’ve tried different monitors, keyboards and mice … same rubber-band feel. On my ageing laptop with an ATI 5650 … same rubber-band feel.

It’s the camera which is slow.

For those familiar with Skyrim, it released with the same camera “features”, but players are able to change the settings in a config file to improve camera responsiveness and FOV. Why not give us a couple of sliders? Allow us to set FOV and acceleration to our own tastes and comfort.
