Cannot Leave PvP Matches
If you leave a pvp match, you are screwing over everyone else on your team.
The game forces you to finish playing your match, and rightfully so.
Quitting a match early essentially screws over 4 other players.
I would compare it to forcing a child to sit in a corner and think about what they have done.
If you aren’t going to play in a pvp match, don’t queue up for one.

1) Your empty place on the roster can’t be filled if you decide you don’t want to play in a match even if you did leave or were booted.
2) Going AFK =/= logging out and trying to play the game elsewhere. You are clearly not afk if you are complaining about not being able to escape a pvp match.
3) Griefing other players, intentional or not, in the form of AFKing pvp matches, joining then leaving, or simply not showing up is not tolerated.

In case you missed it , there is no longer “hotjoin” in any pvp except custom arenas.
Also, Arenanet is the one who does not tolerate griefing.
If you did not want to hear factual information, maybe you should not have created a thread complaining about mechanics which are in place to punish players like you, and keep them out of the rest of the playerbase’s hair.

The only thing I can think of is that players may be swapping characters.
Yes they are swapping charaters. They are not “leaving and joining as if it is hot join.” People change classes based on set up all the time.. Some people purposefully queue up as a light armored class, get in the match, switch to heavy armor class or like an engi. This way their team has more heavies because of the way match making works or is supposed to work. Of course that doesn’t mean they will win but some people think it helps… Anyway if you queue up and can’t committ to the next 15 mins then you shouldn’t be queuing up at all. You are really screwing over other players. Go to custom arenas if you think you may have to go afk.
Also as far as weapon and skill changing goes… This is how unranked and ranked matches work. As soon as the match starts you can’t just switch them… Honesty you should have done more research on the wiki before posting all this. You may still benefit from looking up what Unranked and ranked matches are.
If you get booted from the queue after selecting the map this just means there were not enough players who clicked accept for the match because they were afk or declined. So the queue restarts for all the players that were supposed to be part of that particular match.

You are slightly mistaken, OP. The PvP game mode where players can freely join and leave at anytime is “Practice”, more commonly known as Hotjoin. If your game time is such that you are frequently interrupted or need to go AFK, then I strongly recommend sticking to Hotjoin. It’s the “PvP-lite” where people go to practice new builds or just to muck around and have fun, where really anything goes and nothing there should be taken seriously.
The “Play” (Unranked) and “Compete” (Ranked) game modes feature a lock-in system where if you join the match, you cannot leave. If you try to log out and log back in again, it will put you right back into the same match. If you occasionally see people leaving and joining in these game modes, it is because the same player is switching characters. (Usually because they have studied the enemy team roster and decided to swap characters to one they feel can “counter” an enemy player. It’s a practice I don’t quite approve of, but it’s currently allowed.)
