This is an issue that has been popping up quite often. When I’m in a large group, all of us taking out a single champion or legendary enemy, more than often me and numerous others of the group won’t get any champion loot box out of it.

Now, it’s no problem if this happens only once or twice or something, but this has been happening a few too many times for it to be just a simple glitch.

It only seems to happen when in large groups of people, which is basically every single world boss encounter with champions that drop loot since the megaservers started.

Another thing that’s also noteworthy happens at the claw of Jormag. When in phase 2, there are some champion icebrood that spawn. I’d be hitting these champions non-stop, and while the icebrood trolls and icebrood kodan go down quite fast, the icebrood wolves and the icebrood goliaths have quite a bit more health. Usually, before their health drops to about 50%, Jormag becomes vulnerable, causing all of the champions to die. Now, on a few rare occasions, I still get loot from these only half-killed champions, but more than often I’m left with nothing. I don’t know if this issue is related to the above, but it is also something I don’t quite understand.

On the first issue: before you receive loot you have to do a certain % of dmg against a monster. In large scale combat it sometimes occurs that part of the group won’t reach this percentage (especially condition based builds) this is why you won’t get loot. i agree that in larger scale combat the loot system could use a little bit of tweaking.

On the Jormagg issue: For as far i know almost all monsters of the jormagg boss fight have had their loot removed a.k.a. they don’t drop loot. You should be able to find that in patchnotes on from a while ago.

Yeah, the loot from the champs at Jormag was removed totally when they revamped him the last time before the feature update. Now with the feature update they added more Champs (wolve and goliath are the old ones) to the fight and these champs can drop boxes at the moment.

I’m still not sure if that is now wanted or just an oversight and they also get the loot removed at some point.

There are a lot of Champions that do not drop loot boxes with the new mega server. Champions in Fire Elemental, Champions at Shadow Bohemeth. Listen Anet either Champions drop boxes or they don’t. If they don’t then don’t name them Champions. Make them Elites or something else. All champions should drop boxes. I use to get so much loot before the timers of the mega server screwed everything up. Now im lucky to get even a single box droped.

Behemoth Champs were nerfed directly after the feature patch. I even remember that there was a patch shortly before i killed him where a friend just told me : oh .. the champs here don’t drop anymore.

I noticed the same, sometimes I only hit once arriving late and I still get the bag… while other times I’m making a decent damage the whole fight but I don’t get anything.

There’s been a rumor about a 50-player contribution limit per champ, and it looks plausible (with both current situation and events like Assault Knights).

It really looks like it means more to “register” yourself at a champ rather than to do enough damage; I checked it several times on Beasts at Ulgoth and on Avatars at Wurm, and I can say that indeed if I tag the champ before everyone else I’m almost guaranteed to get the loot, but if I stay at the champ for the whole time and DPS it down I may not get loot if I was late to tag it.

20 level 80s and counting.

It’s obvious that they didn’t consider all the consequences involved with the large numbers of people now participating in the World Boss events. The stats on many events haven’t been properly adjusted and with so many people attacking one target, it dies a LOT quicker than before, ensuring that not all those involved are able to get in enough hits to qualify for the loot, try as they might. Being in a group helps, but it’s certainly not a sure-fire solution. From chat comments, this appears to be a common complaint. Hopefully we’ll see some tweaks soon.

As far as champ loot goes, ALL champs should drop loot. If they’re not going to drop loot, they shouldn’t be called champs, simple as that.

At least with the champions at behemoth you know they aren’t dropping any loot, the experience popup still appears and you still get credit for the kill. Now where we get into the fun are the enemies like the Avatars of Blight before the Jungle Wurm where you don’t get any kill credit/experience/loot despite doing a ton of damage. Or my personal favorite, the frozen maw. Sure I might do enough damage to get credit for the event, but I certainly don’t do enough damage to get credit for a champion kill or bag.

That is of course ignoring all the frozen maw pre-events related to mega-server scaling.

Yeah, I know that there’s also a lot of champions that don’t drop loot, such as at the Shadow Behemoth, but the champions at Jormag have been dropping loot again since the feature pack.

That rumour that Lishtenbird mentions there might explain a whole lot though, and if this is true, then this is a very crappy system :/

This is 100% true. When the war beasts at Ulgoth spawn, I get in and do some damage on each of them as soon as possible, then stay and smack around the 3rd one until it’s dead. I’ll get boxes from the first 2 I hit, and nothing from the 3rd (despite doing what I estimate to be about 200k-300k damage on the 3rd).

The same goes for the Avatars of Blight. Also, one thing that’s a bit annoying about these guys is that as soon as the last one dies, the event ends and the Wurm starts. For about a split second when the last one dies, you’ll see the loot prompt, but it seems like the event completion erases all of the avatars and their loot. I’ve tried mashing F as quickly as possible when it gets down extremely low on health, but it doesn’t work. I can only assume that the loot prompt is shown briefly because the client has not yet received the notification that the event is over, thus during that brief period of latency between client and server it thinks there’s an opportunity to collect it.

edit: in response to Saucermote, the Avatars of Blight do drop loot. Go for the farthest one from the mass of bodies and get in as much damage as you can before they swarm it. If it isn’t the last one to die, you will get a champ drop. This is also why I hang out near the champion grub before it spawns; getting in hits as early as possible guarantees me credit and a drop.

I know the Avatars of Blight drop loot, I get it occasionally, I meant to use them as an example of poor scaling of events for large mobs of people, where no matter how much damage you do, you very probably won’t get loot.

Any drop from any enemy spawned by an event must be moved to the event rewards, and given only upon success.

For example:

  • Those staying behind holding the enemy back will not get the rewards from he lord. This messes with WvW, as you get people rushing to the champion and bursting it, and not everyone who participates gets rewards, and not everyone focuses on the actual task: capturing the location.
  • There’s people that will harass players into failing events so they can farm. Move the drops to the success of the event, and put a timer one those that they could potentially keep from eventually finishing, and ding. No reason to fail on purpose.
  • If a champion event has added enemies, someone focusing on clearing adds so the rest have an easier time will have no bags, while those greedily focusing exclusively in the champion with an autoattack wil likely get the rewards.

Also, the system that calculates participation does not seem to take into account the armor and health of the champion, neither CC or non-damage snares. Someone with a more support-oriented build that literally kept alive a bunch of Berserker players that would have died otherwise are likely to lose the champion’s rewards.

So, I’m frankly puzzled by how no one has mentioned this yet…

How many of you have been testing while in a party?

I have basically no problems getting champion bags for valid champions that actually do drop loot while in a party, unless the majority are low levels or condition builds (or semi/partly afk/space cadeting)

I never seem to have a problem receiving credit and bags for all 7 Ulgoth champions, for example, when in a group. It’s an absolute struggle for me to, solo, unless I’m on a full zerk character.

It’s always seemed to me that champ bag (and loot in general) credit is determined by a % damage, which the entire party can contribute to.

This is how level 20+’s farmed and killbooster speed leveled in Cursed Shore, before the nerf of the Angaria and Arah chain. Party does damage enough to get kill credit, low level smacks them to do a slight amount of damage to tag, and receive full loot and xp.

Sadly this means that condition damage builds and support are again suffering from the new megaserver and the state of general open world PvE. You’re kind of just a burden to your party, unfortunately.

I generally run solo, so my results are skewed as such. I didn’t know that it was now a near-requirement to be partied to get more/better loot on a world boss. So we just party up with random people if guild members aren’t available for the sake of better loot? Seems a bit silly, but that does explain all the “lfg” and “lf1m” etc I see at world bosses now.

Tried that yesterday and after reset at the Svanir Shaman, and at least got loot both times, while i never got loot the last times when i first tried to destroy all the 3 portals.

In the case of Claw of Jormag:

Since the feature patch, the new champs that spawn during phase 2 do drop loot. However, the ones that were in the game before the patch (the champion wolf/wolves and champion goliath) continue to not drop loot. So, if you really want champ loot from phase 2, just go for the champ mobs that aren’t wolves or goliaths.

Yeah .. avoid the champs that take forever to kill and just look for those that go down quicker since the ones with the gazillion of HPs are also the ones that (normally) don’t drop anything.

Actually, that’s not entirely true. Today, I actually got a loot bag from an icebrood goliath, and I remember a week or two ago, I got a champion lootbag from the icebrood elemental that spawns in phase 1.

It’s always seemed to me that champ bag (and loot in general) credit is determined by a % damage, which the entire party can contribute to.

I view the last part of that as a bug. I certainly didn’t use their weapons/skills for those in the group. Either I did the damage or I didn’t.

Taken to the extreme, why don’t natural groups contribute to the damage.

It’s not clear that this is a bug: it appears to be the game working as designed — even groups have to deal enough damage so that members of the group get credit for a bag drop and the members have to deal enough damage to tag the foe for loot. However, the new common schedule for bosses means that zergs are bigger and (for a variety of reasons) do more damage, so the requirements of “enough damage” have increased.

Is this a good design? Probably not, but changing the current mechanism for per-foe and per-event loot tagging won’t be simple. Instead of addressing this single issue, I hope that ANet takes a comprehensive look at rewards during events. For example, there is no way to get rewarded for stripping boons, rezzing, or keeping NPCs & players alive.

Yeah, I’d say it’s intended game design. Everything about GW2 pushes people to working together and social play. Frankly the party tagging system is one of my favorite features of GW2 – I would literally pay to have this in other MMO’s.

As the above poster stated – this model works great for the previous system with moderate to small populations at events. The new megaserver system makes getting in your fair share of damage much harder due to the sheer numbers of people- which is further compounded by the fact that people are grouping up to make it easier for themselves.

Would be really nice to see other actions factor into event and perhaps loot credit, but it seems pretty dauntingly difficult to execute and implement fairly.

And yes, there are now sometimes champs at the pres and they drop bags.
