This issue pertains to a number of jumping puzzles that are overly reliant on dodgy level geometry, but the most recent example being the exterior “window sills” of the SS Topsy Turvy when attempting to access one of the golden badges.
When attempting to perform a running jump on the narrow window sills, the character often does not respond to the jump command and simply continues running, therefore falling off the edge instead of performing a running jump as intended. In this case, the jump occurs well before the end of (the visible representation of) the ledge, so timing shouldn’t be an issue, but it is, since the lack of any jump at all makes it impossible to recover from the error.
When the character falls from the ledge, there is no way for them to return to the upper level except by waypointing. It is also expected that the character should be able to fall, and die, being resurrected by the skritt and returning via the tunnels. However, this seems to not work consistently or have some kind of hidden prerequisite, as the skritt often do not appear and the player is forced to pay for a waypoint either way.
