Cliffside Fractal Hammer Bug [merged]
Yeah… happened to me before… the hammer is in an unreachable place when dying.
It would be nice to have a timer for this to respawn if it is not being carried.
Ok same bug again.
I was engi an had med kit equiped when i picked up the hammer, later i did change my healskill with the Hammer in my hands.. he just disappeared.
We wiped again, and we saw the hammer lying there for a second and he despawned BEFORE we rezzed. We counted for revive but still the hammer did not spawn again.
Free the captured colossus.
It happens twice for me.
It is not possible to reset this hummer by group suicide.
Hummer disappears-> Game Over.

Same here yesterday. Usual wipe din’t help.
Just had this happen, player fell off with the hammer and it disappeared. Party wipes, hammer flashes for about half a second on the pedestal then disappears before you can get near it. Had to abandon the run.
Happened to me 2 times in the last 2 days. If you’re unlucky enough to fall or to have someone else on your team fall with the hammer, you might as well say goodbye to everyone and disband the group. The hammer doesn’t respawn anywhere on the fractal.
Same for our guild run on 49lv(3rd fractal) , we wiped several times trying to reset, disband party , relog/charselect, with no result
Doing fracals on daily basis, this happened for the very fisrt time since months.

My friends got stuck on this and I went to help.
All left party except for me and the opener. We both died and saw the hammer spawn.
So I went thief, jumped into the mists and died right next to the pedestal (using teleport).
One he died too, I saw the hammer spawn for a second and disappear.
So I timed respawning with the time he died and managed to begin picking up the hammer before it disappeared.
The hammer clearly appears, with the text and “press F” dialog before disappearing.
Had this happen yesterday. A pug thief picked up the hammer and fell off (or got downed at the edge by the mobs—not sure) at the chest seal. Bye bye hammer.
We all suicide, and it doesn’t appear to come back. So we suicide more, making certain everyone is dead before anyone resses. Then we suicide and spike-res. No hammer. We try this some more, and I die in the fire near the pedestal where the hammer would respawn. Turns out, the hammer was respawning! It just disappears again shortly after someone resses. We eventually try everyone leaving except the instance opener, and the instance opener dying and ressing. We search everywhere for the hammer, just to see if perhaps it’s respawning and telporting somewhere else on the map.
So we then try and dodge roll to grab the hammer right after respawning. You can get there fast enough to be able to hit “F” to try and pick it up… But there’s no way to actually even start the animation to pick it up by hitting “F”, because it despawns so rapidly.
So somebody gets their mesmer, and tries blinking to the hammer instead of dodging. About as effective as dodging for it.
Our mesmer then drops a portal from the player respawn to the hammer respawn. Can get to the hammer fast enough to hit “F”, and partially finish the animation to pick it up before it despawns. Many failed attempts, before we realize this isn’t enough.
Then, we get the idea of placing a portal, AND a time warp at the hammer location. Time warp makes various actions faster, like gathering from a node faster, so we figure it might work with the hammer, as it’s at least worth a shot. Can you guess what happened? We got to the hammer, and partially finished the animation before it disappeared. No idea if the time warp actually helped or not.
All hope is lost. We abandon the run.
I’ve seen this happen as well. (I thought we thoroughly tested all possible work-around, but Zui has us beat! We tried blinks and portals and blinks+portals, but didn’t think to try Time Warp.)
Happened to us as well. Exactly as described:
- someone is in combat, with the hammer, falls down the cliff. Hammer disappears.
- hammer nowhere to be found. We searched all levels.
- forced group wipe
- the hammer appears on the pedestrial for a split second, then disappears
- we searched for the hammer again on the whole map on each levels, no hammer.
- no change on more foced wipes
- unable to procceed.
Happened to us 2 times in a row on 49 today and some days ago on a lower level. Not funny.
If a video could help you in tracking this bug down: I recorded both sessions completely and can upload it somewhere, if you like.

Not just in combat. If someone falls off the interior platforms (near the seals), they are teleported back to that platform, but without the hammer. That is: the hammer wasn’t dropped, it disappeared. Near as I can tell, being in/out of combat is irrelevant.
Separately, people can fall off the scaffolding on the exterior and the hammer falls from their hands when they are downed. In that case, the hammer can be seen, but (sometimes) becomes inaccessible. This can definitely happen outside of combat as well as during.

Ok, so I was the instance owner, 2 people left, and i told the other 2 to log out to character screen…so they all leave, and I’m the only one, right ?
so when I’m dead, the hammer is there to be picked up, but as soon as i rezzz the hammer disappears
it completely stops progress 100%
blocks it entirely it happened yesterday and it happened again today
I’ve had this bug three times now and posted in these forums about the bug with no response a couple weeks ago.
However, I believe these posts need to be more specific to help Anet fix this bug if they choose to fix it.
I’ve had this happen to me only at the chest and the arms. Specifically this will happen when you are at the seals. If you drop it getting to the seals you can still reset it (if someone else has had a different experience please reply). The game mechanics change a bit for falling off when you are at the seals. If you fall at the seals the game mechanics move you to a spot near the seal and put you in downed state. This makes it possible for your party to come rez you. This is also where the problem occurs. A player with the hammer who falls while at the seals will lose the hammer. It will disappear. I believe the hammer used to spawn on top of the downed player before the last major patch. Regardless, before the last major patch, this was not an issue because the whole party could wipe to respawn the hammer. Obviously this doesn’t work anymore as other’s have pointed out it only spawns for a short time before disappearing from the platform.
This is also slightly different than losing the hammer on your way up to a seal. If someone falls off the hammer usually ends up floating in the air somewhere near where they fell. This doesn’t happen when someone falls off near the seal because they don’t actually fall, they are just moved close to the seal in a downed state as explained previously.
If anyone else has any more specific details – or if you find that some of my info here is incorrect – please let me know with a reply.
Note to OP: It might be helpful to update your first post with the more specific details and put (updated/date) after the title, that way it might get a dev’s attention as we get more details on the bug. I don’t know if they actually go through all the replys and read all of them.

Just encountered this very issue today with our Fractals group, the previous post describes exactly what happens. Wasted several hours today trying to do fractals, only to encounter this bug twice.
Yeah, crap like this had been bugged for months now. As mentioned in a previous post I wrote, the Molten Facility weapons testing fractal has been bugged for months now. I received an email from ArenaNet saying there is no ETA on this whatsoever. I’m lead to believe that they simply aren’t working on it. It doesn’t seem to be that hard to fix or at least change. Part of this fractal requires people to be careful when ascending. One misstep, you hit the wind spout things and fall off. Good game.
Happened to me/us in frac 29/50 as described above – no progress, had to abandon. Every time we got this as 3rd frac, so 20 – 30 min wasted for nothing!
If you can’t fix it, then take it out of the rotation PLEASE! Atm it’s just ridiculous…
No update on frac but install a bug in one. Without words.

Had this happen today on last fractal before boss, so that really blew.
Our Guard ran out to hit the seal on the right arm (if standing in front of and facing colossus) and got knocked back. Somehow dropped the hammer and it was lost forever after that. Tried wiping the party several times and the hammer did not re-appear.
I know someone who runs mesmer in Fractals so she can make someone else carry the hammer while she runs up and portals them.
If the person carrying the hammer gets knocked off while in combat or something, though, I don’t know. Maybe Anet should change it so there’s always a copy of the hammer that respawns at set time intervals at the very bottom of the map where you first kill Archdiviner. :P
(Though in retrospect the time intervals may have to be spaced apart enough that it wouldn’t be worthwhile for most people to stand there and wait for multiple copies of the hammer to spawn so everyone in the party can have one.)

This is still happening. At arms the seal knocks you back when you are too close. I warn people about this and the bug but they still get right on top of the seal and end up getting knocked back into a hole. The hammer is permanently lost. This needs fixed asap
The hammer needs to respawn with the downed player who fell off at the seal. This is how the fractal used to work. Or please take this out of the rotation until you have time to fix it.

This needs to be fixed. This is the third time this has happened to us in as many weeks and it’s infuriating to have half your night essentially go to waste because of an asinine bug. The hammer respawn needs to be adjusted back to where it was so that in the event a player falls with the hammer, progress isn’t forced to a complete halt. It’s an easy fix; fix it.
Had an issue with a hammer, but slightly different. the guy who was carrying the hammer dc. then he came back in and hammer was nowhere to be seen, when we all wiped we could see it appearing and dissapearing on the rock, but as soon as we ressed it vanished.
This is currently being investigated.
Thank you. Please note this bug occurred when you changed how close you have to be to the seal to hit it. Some players were exploiting the first two seals by hitting them both at the same time with one hammer charge. I believe this is why the distance to hit the seals was adjusted and this is when the hammer became bugged at the seals when a player falls off with it. Please refer to my longer post above for the specifics of this bug. It should be easy to replicate. (17th post down)

Just as a heads-up, I have a little more information that might be useful. I actually just wrote up a support ticket and sent it in:
A repeatable bug (reproduction rate: 100%) occurs in the Cliffsides fractal that renders it impossible to complete and forces a complete restart from the beginning of the scale. This kind of run-ending bug is unacceptable – especially in a tediously long and unrewarding (thanks to the infinite respawn = no loot enemies and fighting the final boss TWICE) fractal that shows up as a possibility for both the 2nd and 3rd, making it one of the most likely fractals to show up in a given run, at ~36%.
The glitch results in the Cultist’s Hammer disappearing from the map and becoming permanently irretrievable.
The glitch is triggered when the hammer carrier falls through the cracks in the platforms around the ARM seals of the colossus, right before the boss of the fractal. In my personal experience, I’ve only seen this happen at the arm seal closer to the boss, but the reproduction rate is 100%. Every single time the hammer carrier falls through one of these small holes around the arms, the hammer vanishes permanently.
My personal suspicion is that this occurs because when players fall through those particular holes, they are immediately placed in the downed state on the VERY SAME platform. With most falls off the level, the player is placed in the downed state at the hammer pedestal of the PREVIOUSLY COMPLETED platform, but with this particular location (and possibly others, I haven’t tested outside of the arm seals in particular) the player is placed in the downed state at the hammer pedestal of a NOT-YET-COMPLETED platform. Since the platform is not completed, the hammer cannot be placed at the pedestal where it should, but is glitched to only be able to spawn at that platform, causing the hammer to be effectively completely removed from the map.
With some of the hammer disappearance glitches on this map, a full party wipe is enough to respawn the hammer at the pedestal of the PREVIOUSLY COMPLETED platform, but perhaps because this glitch seems to bind the hammer to the pedestal of a NOT-YET-COMPLETED platform (where it is impossible for the hammer to appear), even a full party wipe does not make it possible to retrieve the hammer. Upon full party wipe, and simultaneous respawn, the hammer appears briefly (about 0.25 seconds) at the pedestal of the PREVIOUSLY COMPLETED platform, but it disappears immediately afterward, rendering it permanently irretrievable. I’ve tried many combinations of various tactics to get the system to respawn the hammer at the correct pedestal, but to no avail.
Attempted fixes: Full party wipe, full party wipe with everyone respawning except hammer wielder, everyone leaving fractal (character select) except fractal opener, various combinations of player suiciding and staying alive at pedestal, and none of them have worked. To my knowledge, there is no current solution to this gamebreaking bug, which forces a complete restart of the entire fractal run from scratch. This bug has occurred 6 times for me so far, and has a 100% reproduction rate. Every time that a player with the hammer falls into those holes around the arm seals, the hammer has permanently disappeared and forced a restart.
It would be reasonable to assume that any time the hammer-carrying player falls into a location that causes them to be downed at a not-yet-completed platform, the hammer will become irretrievable. For the holes around the arm seals, it’s 100% failure, but I haven’t tested around the chest seal etc. at all, though I do recall being downed behind that little bonfire by the chest seal after falling through a small hole in the chest seal. For this reason, you’re generally safe falling off the windy platforms, jumping puzzle, etc., but you’re very much at risk when near un-shattered seals.

This also happened to me when I DC’ed while holding the hammer. Same issue. We all tried to die to reset it. It blinks into existence on the pedestal for a few seconds while we are dead and then it is gone.
@ Tesumia. Your information is incorrect. When the player falls at a seal they are always put in a downed state at the current and uncompleted seal. It has always worked this way. They were not put in a downed state a level lower. You are only put in a downed state a level lower when you fall off the side on the way up to a new seal. In that case you can reset the hammer because it is floating in the air somewhere. This bug can occur at any level for the seals but it is most likely to occur at arms because of the holes. You don’t have to go through the hole you could also simply jump off the side and the bug would still happen.
@digitalruse. That is good to know. I suspect when the game moves you to a downed state at the seal it actually takes you off the map in the process. That is when the hammer gets permanently lost. I believe that the hammer respawns on wipe when you fall with it before a seal phase because it is still on the map floating in the air somewhere. If you DC it’s obviously off the map as well and can’t be reset with a wipe.

The hammer used to come back after a wipe, but now it doesn’t always come back.
After completely breaking our armors by jumping off the cliff for wipes, and thoroughly searching the entire fractal, we gave up.
Maybe it’s related to the recent change to the hammer that makes it work only when used right in front of the seal.
You could probably just make it so hammers keep spawning at all the altars through the fractal regardless of any hammers players have in their hands, and regardless of if they wiped or not; but I would recommend something else instead:
1. Break the hammer each time it hits a seal like at the top seal.
2. Make those endless enemy waves always include a veteran cultist with another hammer.
As hammers would keep coming, losing them becomes impossible, as long as the enemy waves consistently spawn more hammer-wielding veterans and dropping them.

This happened to me a week or two ago. The hammer was stuck floating where his body had fallen below the map.

This bug happened to my party last week and I’ve stayed away from Fractals because of it.
How prevalent is this bug and are there ways to avoid this from happening while the issue hasn’t been fixed/recognized by Anet yet?
Just happened again today. I stepped in one of the holes on the third platform, was instantly downed and teleported back to the platform. I saw the hammer spawn next to me for about 1-2 seconds and then it disappeared (I couldn’t even try to interact with it, since I was still downed). That was the last of the regular fractals, but we had to exit.
Of course, it would be great if you guys could solve the underlying issue, but if that’s not possible, how about having an interactable object next to the Anvil that allows to generate a new hammer? (No doubt there’s some ugly coding to prevent 2+ hammers from being out at the same time.)
Thank you for looking in to this. Last night a guildie fell through a hole at the arms and we were unable to recover the hammer. When we wiped, I saw the hammer for a split second (after the last person died) and had a moment of hope but alas it was gone when we resurrected.

Happened to us today again (i think it was fixed? We had a run in between my first post and this one, where we were able to retake the hammer, but maybe its just luck?).
Anyway, we will stay away from fractals unless this is fixed.
Yeah this just happened to us today. I fell through a hole, not even at the arms, but at the stomach seal and the hammer was lost. It happened at the arms for me a couple days ago as well.
It’s just really aggravating when, for instance, the crafting components of a new back-piece require fractal tokens, and yet about every time or every other time we are unable to complete a fractal run when this fractal bugs out like this. It would be nice if it could be temporarily removed from the rotation until the bugs could be fixed.

Giving this my +1, just happened to my group. Same situation as Entropic describes where a carrier of the hammer fell through the gap near the arm nearest to the gate which leads up to the boss.
The hammer had vanished previously by someone who was blown off by wind, and wiping the group did bring it back. But nothing we could do worked the 2nd time.

This happened to our group yesterday, during the breaking chest seal. I carried a hammer, made a dodge, and fell through a gap. My character returned to the platform in a downed state without a hammer. Nothing could help us in that situation and our group had to start from the beginning of fractals.

Happened tonight on an otherwise smooth run, same conditions as many have listed above (while doing arm seals, one person fell at right seal, they respawned downed on platform minus hammer, hammer completely MIA) – as it was with a guild group, we spent a lot of time trying every solution we could think of to try and reset. In addition to the methods Tesumia listed, we also tried different methods of wiping (falling, burning from the braziers, death by chanters) dying at different points to try and force an earlier check point respawn (from each of the floors, as well as all the way from spawn) blinking to grab the hammer right when it showed up on death of party, etc. We managed to get fast enough at it to trigger the picking up sound but did not actually pick up anything, and it disappeared almost instantly.
…Please fix this already, it’s infuriating to have happen towards the end of a third fractal, especially at the higher levels.

We know what’s being done:
- They are collecting data and trying to replicate the circumstances.
- For each situation, they will attempt to determine a root cause.
- They are hoping that there will be a single root cause that can be addressed by an easily adjusted bit of code. If not that, at least a single root cause.
What they are not doing is kludging a solution and potentially creating new issues.
None of that is easy to do or quick. It’s rare that any development teams discuss their methods or theories (no one who eats meat wants to know how bacon is made, never mind sausage). I hope, however, that whenever there’s a solution, it will make it into the patch notes. (ANet is worse at this than they really ought to be, for their own sakes, never mind for ours.)
My guild has decided to stop doing fractals because of this bug. Four times now we have run fractals in the last week, and every single time the hammer was lost on the Cliffside Fractal causing us to abandon the run completely.
On the area where you have to run back and forth between the two seals, there is a crack near the right seal and they push you back when you release them. Every single time a player gets pushed back into this crack. We tried to avoid it , but it seems to be nearly impossible and our Stability uptimes aren’t sufficient enough.
Keep in mind that this fractal usually comes up as #3, not #1, which makes it all the more frustrating since you are almost done with the fractal …

Chalk up another lost Fractal to this. I had a group of five where we ran the hammer up to the Chest Seal. Nobody died, fell off. I had a watchful eye on any griefing. The Hammer despawned, straight up.
My guild has decided to stop doing fractals because of this bug. Four times now we have run fractals in the last week, and every single time the hammer was lost on the Cliffside Fractal causing us to abandon the run completely.
On the area where you have to run back and forth between the two seals, there is a crack near the right seal and they push you back when you release them. You can avoid the knock back by not getting up on top of the seal to hit it. If you are far away enough it won’t knock you back although you risk missing the hit but that’s not too big of a deal. If you need to get up close to hit it do it from the side so when it knocks you back you won’t go through the hole.
