Q:
Crafting: Items disappear from the discovery panel.
I have noticed this issue with cooking. I was unable to find carrots in my discovery pane. Then chocolate disappeared and now Butter is gone.
Normally the item will disappear from the discovery pane when there is nothing more to discover from it… So not sure if it’s either that there’s nothing else for you to discover or if it’s a proper bug.

I’m having the same problem with tailoring around 30 in skill level. A ton of different tailoring materials won’t show up in the discovery tab and i know for sure there are plenty of recipes left to discover with those materials. Not only don’t they show up, but it wont let me use them if i drag them from the inventory and over to the discovery panel.
Elshagan: Thanks for your input. Unfortunately it’s definately a bug. The items that I’m unable to make further discoveries from doesn’t disappear, but gets colored red’ish (at least I think that’s why they turn red).
This is a matter of materials that I know for certain that I should be able to make discoveries from, but they’re simply not visible in the discovery section. I can have carrots, walnuts and onions (in that order) in my bag for example, but then the discovery pane will only show the carrots and onions next to each other.
Missywink & Lithorec: Thanks for your response. Even though I’m sad to hear you’re also effected by this, it’s nice to know that it ain’t just me though. Means there’s a chance it’ll actually get fixed.
Actually the items that you are unable to make further discoveries with are not colored red. They are removed from discovery panel. They are colored red if you still can make discoveries but arent high enough skill level yet.
Also many recipes are unlocked automatically so you don’t need to discover them and wont show up in either of the discovery at all or crafting until you get to that level.
Just came here looking for the same bug. My wool and wool thread and all my rare items are not showing up in the discovery window for leatherworking. Can’t level because all my items are about greyed out.
They are in my inventory and not showing red, just not there, tried relogging with no love.
Dragonz:
Ahh I see, thank you. Just figured that the items colored red, had something to do with being unable to make discoveries from them. And I guess it has, just not the way I thought.
So maybe it isn’t a bug after all? I was just so certain, at least in regards to the inscriptions used in artificing, that I should have been able to make more discoveries with those. But maybe it explains why I was able to use them in the huntsman craft then, and not the artificing craft.
Maybe I’m mistaken then, I’ll have another look at my crafting tonight and see how it works out. Thanks for your time and answer!
I noticed this too on some occations, and i think it has something to do with exhausting the options for discovery with that particular item … BUT !
Another thing that may be happening is that the game registers ‘No XP can be gained from this recipe’ as a ‘no discovery can be made from this object’ … with that i mean that if you outlevel a certain discovery, the game may block this discovery entirely by removing the items needed for the discovery from the discovery pane.
So mainly at Amaris, as (s)he says to be sure there are discoveries to be made with those items: would creating an already discovered similar level item still give you XP?
In more words, you can discover various ‘inscriptions’ that give more/different options for the weapon-bonus you add to a weapon; there seem to be various that give a similar level to the weapon crafted; As you gain more XP these inscriptions obviously grey out, now if you did not discover a certain inscription yet, for a certain weapon-lvl-outcome, does it still let you discover another recipe of that lvl.
Sigh this only seems to be getting more confusing, lets try an example :P
- You unlock inscriptions made with: blood, bone, nails (exampled materials)
- You could discover inscriptions made with: dust, scales; but you only discovered the one made with dust…
=> now you keep crafting untill the options for blood, bone, nails, dust are greyed out… Can you still discover the inscription made with scales?!?
I will try this myself, when i gathered enough materials to try this out, but it may be interesting for Amaris to check which recipies he is expecting to make, but the game won’t allow. As any bug usually has a cause, it may be that ‘gaining 0XP’ from the item removes them as an option to discover them, as a result removing the crafting materials from the discovery pane…

Majorfish: I have the same problem with items being greyed out and thus, having difficulties finding anything to level my skills with. Which is why I felt certain that the disappearing items was a bug.
I have been getting the same bug with cooking. I think it is an actual bug because it is happening with one item in particular (walnuts) that I haven’t cooked with ever. I was so excited to find this new item, and then when I went back to cook with it, it wasn’t showing up in discovery. Since I haven’t ever cooked with walnuts before (or even seen a recipe that used them), it isn’t possible that there just aren’t any new recipes for me to find.
I have also not been able to use blueberries in discovery, and probably other items as well.
I have also been having this problem. I actually switched my original crafting choices because so many of the (very necessary still) items were not showing up. I picked up Jewelry. I just hit level 50, and as soon as I did so my Piles of Glittering Dust no longer show up in the Discovery Panel. Items I know to make that require this mat show up just fine, but not the mat in the discovery panel.
I am pretty sure the cooking thing is not a bug as I have items that are within my level going red and several items refusing to show at all and some of these items I have never cooked with at all, I am also getting other items which people say are showing not showing and vice versa it only started since last night. Also has cinnamon sugar pile been removed from the game.
surreal my glittering dust has never showed up in the discovery bit, if thats any help, but you can make the items that need it
@Arghore that makes no sense as in cooking you need alot of lower level stuff to make other stuff later on, so if you skipped them until later you would not be able to make other higher recipies if you did not discover earlier.
Same problem with armorsmithing, Currently at 100 and only see two items labeled for lvl 100. I do not see Bolt of Wool in the list either, nor do I see Bolt of Jute in the list. Do not see Small Fangs, nor do I see Small Totem and those items are listed for lvl 100.
Do not see Small Fangs, nor do I see Small Totem and those items are listed for lvl 100.
Aren’t those used for auto-learned recipes though – ones that you get at 100 crafting automatically? I don’t remember them being in recipes that needed to be discovered.
Discovery for tailoring/leatherworking/huntsman generally consisted of:
- Combine insignia (auto learned or karma bought recipe) with 2 item parts (e.g. tunic padding and tunic panel) to get item based on the insignia used.
- Combine base material (e.g. iron ingots) with a gold material drop that doesn’t go to the collectables storage (e.g. charged slivers) to make a rune/weapon upgrade item
- Tailoring/Leatherworking: Combine base material + other material + rune of holding from the crafting npc to make bags
Other recipes were either auto-learned, or had to be purchased. Most base materials themselves are often not used for discoverable recipes (cooking is an exception). e.g. Leatherworking never used bolts of cloth as discoverable items – it’s “base material” for bags/etc was usually leather pads.
Not seeing the small totems or small fangs in the discovery tab sounds right – there were no discoverable recipes for those if I remember correctly.
Having items that were previously listed vanish may be a bug – but only if the last recipe discovered did not use that component. Otherwise, you just ran out of discoverable recipes for that ingredient – other recipes using it may need to be purchased from a karma vendor somewhere.

I have the same problem with tailoring, i checked out the ingriedients for a recipe on internet, and went collecting them. As soon as i had everything i went to a cratfing station to discover the recipe, but then Only a few ingriedients showed up.
the materials were in my inventory and they still could be used for unknown recipes.
So.. Hope anybody has a solution.
I am having the same issue with salt and cooking. There is a recipe I need to learn to continue with my cooking, but it requires salt. If it is true that the items disappear, then salt has disappeared before it should have. I know for a fact that I can make other items with salt (i.e. Bowl[s] of Watery Mushroom Soup. This requires 1x Mushroom, 1x Packet of Salt, & 1x Bowl of Poultry Stock). Due to this, please don’t say this ’isn’t a bug’ and is ‘working as intended’. I know for a fact it is a bug. In fact, everything was working fine until the second patch on the day before launch. After that patch, salt disappeared.

This is a bug. I have the problem with both walnuts and tangy seasoning. In the case of walnuts, I’m trying
to discover the recipe here http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Walnut_Sticky_Bread
My cooking skill is high enough for the recipe and I haven’t already discovered it, nor was it auto-learned. The walnuts and tangy seasoning don’t show up in the discovery pane and none of my pre-discovered recipes use these ingredients.
BTW, the way the Red items works in cooking is an item will turn red in the discovery pane if either…
1. There are no more discoveries left from that item or,
2. Any further discoveries from that item require a higher level of cooking skill.
If you drag a red item to the discovery pane, underneath it will tell you how many more discoveries you can make from that item. If there are none it just says 0. Otherwise, it gives you a number under which it will say “required rating” followed by a red number telling you what your cooking skill must be to get more discoveries from that item.

I think you missed a line of text on the wiki
The following recipe must be learned from a Recipe Sheet from Lionguard Auda before it is available.
That isn’t one you discover.
Hey, good catch Azimov! You’re right, I completely missed that. That’s odd though, because I have other ingredients I’ve got nothing left to discover from and they still show up on the discovery pane. AN should probably change the UI for this to make it consistent so it doesn’t look so much like a bug if there indeed isn’t one. Perhaps in addition to the red items they should also have greyed out items. Then they could show ALL of the ingredients you have no more discoveries for in the discovery pane. That seems more intuitive to me.
I think they were trying to keep it from getting too cluttered, because showing all of your past cooking items (for example) on the discovery pane would make digging through those quite inconvenient.
Is there possibly a filter for Show Only Those That Give XP, like there is with the recipe tab? I’m not at home so I can’t check.

No, there’s no filters in the discovery pane at all. Perhaps you’d agree that having the greyed items there wouldn’t be so hard to dig through if it auto-sorted for you? I’m thinking it could list all the greyed items first, followed by the red, and then followed by the currently useful items for discoveries.
Also, I’d like to add to this proposed UI change a tally at the bottom for players like follows…
Known recipes : 65
Recipes left to purchase/acquire : 29
Recipes left to discover: 93
Unknown recipes which can be discovered at current skill level: 12
I know I would find that very useful.
So I’m having a issue that all my items don’t show up in the discovery tab. I am unable to craft in armorsmithing. I’ve tried dragging to the discovery box , putting the items in my inventory and nothing seems to work.
This is my 2nd post with problems I have been having and yet no response from the game makers at all. It’s like I don’t exist to them. I really feel that I would rather have my money back for the game. I would think that you would be more worried about the customers than just releasing more sales to the public with to many bugs.

Oh I have no problems with having even unusable items on Discovery. I was just speculating on why they aren’t.
Maybe a filter, like on the Recipes pane, would also work on the Discovery pane, to show/not show whatever you want would work out really well?
I also like your tally idea a lot!
I’m pretty sure that crafting isn’t bugged just some of your understanding of it. You do not need the ‘discovery’ tab in order to craft. The tab is only for discovering new recipes not for crafting recipes that you already know. To craft items you already know you use the ‘production’ pane.
Dragonz was right in that items disapear when you’ve made them all, and that red items were items that still had discoveries available but you were under levelled. I think the issues is that you’re expecting more use from each item than you actually get. Once you go up a tier, the items are no longer used and ‘similar’ items take thier place.
Going through the bug ‘examples’.
Artificing, things disapearing at 75 ish were because at 75 you change to a different set of ingredients. You stop using ‘green wood’ and move on to ‘soft wood’. All of the inscriptions previously made using green wood dowels and bronze plated dowels are irrelevent for the new discoveries. Those new discoveries use inscriptions made from soft wood dowels and iron plated dowels. Instead of combining with tiny totem, tiny scale, bone chip etc. you combine with small totem, small scale, bone shard etc.
Basically, once you’ve created the healing green inscription, the malign, mighty, precise, resilient and vital green inspcriptions, all of the previous components e.g. tiny venom sacs, vial of weak blood, the dowells etc will stop showing in the discovery pane. Once you’ve created a (in the case of artifacing) focus, scepter, staff and trident with each inscription there is nothing more to be discovered, and the inscription will vanish.
Moving on to Piles of Glittering Dust disapearing at level 50 jewellry. At level 50 jewlery you automatically learn the recipes for transmogrifying gemstones using glittering dust. At that point there is nothing new to learn so it vanishes. The next level of transmogrification is unlocked at level 125 and uses a pile of “shimmering” dust. These are added to the ‘production’ pane.
The same sort of examples is true for all the ‘issues’ being reported. Each item is generally only used for a small amount of ‘discoveries’ and then is no longer listed on the discovery pane.
TL:DR
Each level of crafting uses a different tier of components. e.g green wood dowels->soft woods dowels, small fangs->tiny fangs etc.
Once everything that can be discovered with an item has been crafted (or automatically added to the production pane), the items are no longer on the discovery pane.
The discovery pane is NOT the main screen for crafting. That is the ‘production’ pane, and new recipes are added as you level up without you having to discover them.
If ALL your items are not showing on the discovery pane, it’s time to start playing in a slightly harder zone to get drops of the next tier of items.
Still TL:DR
Use the production pane too!
Table Warfare Miniatures - Armatures, Custom Miniatures, Moulds etc.
Kaz,
The point being made here is that not all discoveries have been made before that item disappeared. An example is that I can’t “Discover” a filigreed amber jewel that I didn’t do when I was still on Copper, because the amber pebbles don’t appear any more.
I haven’t needed to, so I didn’t much care, but I definitely have seen this happen.
An example is that I can’t “Discover” a filigreed amber jewel that I didn’t do when I was still on Copper, because the amber pebbles don’t appear any more.
Have you made sure to have the pebbles in your inventory?
They changed it so you can craft straight out of the collectables tab, but stuff needs to be on your person to show in the discovery pane.
For me, the above reasons don’t apply at all. I’m level 24 in Huntsman, only off of making many of the basic items. I’ve never used the discovery pane before, and it’s only listing my bronze bars and glittering dust (and shimmering dust, but that’s in red). It does NOT show my vials of weak blood, or venom sacs, or any other crafting items which are at my level. At best, I’m putting this as a poorly explained mechanic, worst (and I’m hoping) a bug. I can’t discover ANYTHING at the moment, because almost no items appear in the tab.
I’m levelling artificing, at skill level 44 currently – I’d just used a self-created Mighty Green Inscription to discover Mighty Crude Focus (so the item was working fine in the discovery window), and ran out of inscriptions to do more so bought some from the AH. Now the AH-bought Mighty Green Inscription do not appear in the discovery window, even though all 5 other types do.
Definitely a bug, there’s no logical reason why it wouldn’t show up. Yes, I have it in my bag, just like all the other ones. I can also use the inscription successfully to make items I’ve already discovered that use it.
I strongly think it is a bug. I quickly leveled to 150 in jewelry, but I can’t even get to 50 in tailoring because there are only about 3 ingredients that will appear in my discovery pane, even though I have every available Tailor ingredient for my level. Ingredients like “Tiny Claw,” which are rated “Tailor (25)” will not appear in my discovery window even though I am a level 41 tailor and I have not discovered anything using “Tiny Claw.”
Seriously, something is wrong.
Just because an item is used by a profession doe not mean it has discoverable recipes.
Tiny Claws are used to make some insignias, so you do have recipes that use them.
Basic tier armour crafting has 6 different types of insignia, and 6 different armour pieces, these are where most of your discoveries come from.
There are also runes, but these are a bit more mixed up as to what items combine.

Which weapon have you not found a “Mighty Crude” version of that you are expecting to discover still?
It sounds like you have already gone through a stack of the inscriptions so maybe you did them all.
You should monitor how many undiscovered recipes things have by putting the inscription in first.
I seem to have the same problem. I am currently at level 0 for armorsmith crafting and I have tons of crafting matrls, I have tried to put the basic copper ore and tin to make xyz and neither will show up in the pane, They are both in my inventory and I have extra slots. I cant believe this big of a problem exists…basically I cannot craft ANYTHING. I have even tried a different craft and I have the same problem.

Nothing is wrong – these are not used for discoverable recipes.
- Tiny Claw is used in the Precise insignia recipe – which is auto-learned. It’s in the Production window at level 25.
- The Precise insignia, when made, will show up in the discovery window.
- You combine the insignia with two components that are made from armor parts recipes that are ALSO auto-learned and listed in the Production window.
e.g. You have in Production:
- Bolts of Jute (auto-learned at level 0)
- Stretched Rawhide Leather Squares (auto-learned at level 0)
- Jute Tunic Panel (auto-learned at level 0) – uses 4 Bolts of Jute, 1 Stretched Rawhide Leather Square, and 3 Jute Thread (thread purchased from the crafting trainer)
- Jute Tunic Lining (auto-learned at level 0) – uses 1 Bolt of Jute
- Precise Jute Insignia (auto-learned at level 25) – uses 1 Bolt of Jute and 3 Tiny Claws
The Jute Tunic Panel, Jute Tunic Lining, and Precise Jute Insignia combine in the Discovery Panel to learn the recipe to create a Precise Embroidered Coat (blue quality, level 15 to wear). The tiny claws themselves are NOT used in discovery – they’re used to make components that are then used in discovery instead. (Note that there are other insignias that are autolearned at level 0 – you don’t have to wait for claws at 25 to create armor).
Tailoring, Leatherworking, Armorsmithing, Huntsman, Weaponsmith, and Artificer all work in this way. Jewelery crafting is a little more complex, Cooking more complex again. Cooking has a lot more recipes that are karma-bought and has a lot more 4-item recipes and “make this to make that to make the other thing” recipes. That said, ALL rare/exotic level insignias for the 3 armor and 3 weapon crafts are ALSO karma-bought.
I seem to have the same problem. I am currently at level 0 for armorsmith crafting and I have tons of crafting matrls, I have tried to put the basic copper ore and tin to make xyz and neither will show up in the pane, They are both in my inventory and I have extra slots. Have a look in the next panel down – “Production” – and create some of the armor components. The process described for Tailoring above is identical to the process for Armorsmith except you’ll use bronze instead of leather – create an insignia and 2 armor components, and use those in the discovery panel.
Edit: For everyone – once you’ve discovered a recipe, it is permanently available in the Production window – you won’t be able to recreate that exact recipe in the Discoverable window a second time (though you can craft multiples in the “congratulations you’ve created an XXX” popup that is shown when you first discover the recipe).

Auto learn? how does that work? Who said nothing is wrong? how can I be level 0 and not have but one ingredient show up in my discovery pane? I cant even put in copper ore and tin…the simplest thing to make.
Since you are starting at 0, use the recipes that you already have for basic components like copper ingots and bolts of jute. This will start leveling your craft. You don’t have to discover these.

On the left column of the crafting window is 4 icons. The second one down is a hammer – this opens the Production window.
In the Production window on the left next to icon column is the list of known recipes. You will find the recipe for mixing copper and tin already here, since it unlocks automatically when you spoke to the NPC trainer to start learning the craft.
By “autolearned”, I was referring to recipes that simply appear in your list of known recipes when you are high enough to make them. You cannot ever make those recipes in the discovery tab, because you automatically know them.

Walnuts, Basil and Salt all do not show up in my Discovery Tab at all. This is at 0 cooking with only the very beginning recipes known. So to all you people who keep saying that there’s nothing wrong, there definitely something bugged. And those are just the three I saw. Hopefully a patch will be forthcoming soon to fix this problem.
P.S.: Yes, I learned cooking on a fresh character JUST to test this very issue. Stop saying nothing is wrong.

Walnuts won’t show as far as I can see, because the food recipes using them have to be bought with karma and the dye recipes using them unlock automatically.
Salt and Basil should be shown if they are in your inventory (not your bank)…if they are not, then that does sound like a bug, since at level 0 in the craft there is no way you could have learned all their recipes.
Could I suggest attaching a screenshot with the discovery tab and your inventory both open showing the salt/basil in the inventory but not in the discovery pane so that ArenaNet have something to work from to see that this isn’t just confusion about how the discovery pane works (which has been the case for a lot of the previous reports).

I’ve had the same issue with leather working for over a week now and am stuck on 148 and unable to discover a lot of recipes listed in the database including any satchels etc.
The satchel recipes are learned by getting the recipe scroll from the mystic forge, not through the discovery tab at the crafting station.

Discovery crafting may now use items directly from a player’s bank.
I noticed that my salt and strawberries disappeared from my discovery window, so this bug is still around My bug showed up after I purchased strawberries from the Trading Post, and my salt disappeared after I purchased it from a vendor.
This bug is definitely still around. I can’t make any slot bags because my ingots wont show up in the discovery window : (
FireBelcher.3510 – Salt will disappear from the ‘discovery’ window if you have discovered all the ‘discoverable’ recipes. Same with Strawberries…and all other ingredients. However you can still use salt through the production window to make things. If you haven’t discovered everything with these things and they aren’t showing up then it’s a bug (OR the recipe has to be purchased from a karma vendor and can’t be discovered).
Phaenilix.3124: Check the production window rather than discovery, you should be able to make bags from there? Ingots wont show up in the discovery window if there is nothing new to discover with them (or possibly you aren’t high enough level in the crafting?).
Still sounds to me as if a lot of this issue is people misunderstanding the crafting system rather than it being a bug. Although what Cloneofyou.2467 mentions does sound like there may be some sort of bug in there somewhere!
While some people might not understand crafting, I can tell you that I have been stuck at 148 jewelcraft for weeks now waiting for this to be resolved. I have never ONCE seen a peridot in my discovery window (it’s level 100) and have never had the chance to craft with them, whether it was earring, ring, whatever. Someone even suggested I had a corrupted file and I just tried to repair my launcher and still logged into the same problem.
This is a bug, I need sour cream for a recipe at crafting level 250, I have the other 3 mats – they show in the discovery tab, the 49 sour cream I have do not…..

I’ve had a nearly identical problem on my engineer for the past 2 or three days. On my engineer only 8-10 materials from my bank/bags will be displayed on the discovery page. I know for a fact I haven’t discovered all the recipes from the non-displayed items so there isn’t anything I’m aware of other than a bug that could cause this. It would be nice to know that they’re working on fixing this but from what I’ve seen this is fairly uncommon so I’m worried this will be going on for a while. Also my other characters don’t have this issue, only my engineer.
