For some reason, Piles of Vile Essence and Piles of Putrid Essence don’t show up in the discovery panel of the huntsman station.

I’m having a similar problem, but mine is green wood planks with my artificer.

Materials only show up in the discovery panel if there are still recipes to discover from them. If you’ve unlocked all recipes that involve Vile essence, then it won’t show up in the panel any more. My guess is that, as a 400 huntsman, you’ve done exactly that. There is nothing more to learn from Vile essence, so it no longer shows.

As an example: put one of the items that do show up in the panel (say, Ecto), in the discovery box. It will say “X possible recipes.” Once you’ve discovered all of them. That particular item (Ecto) will no longer be displayed.
