Sounds like an exploit.

Sounds like an exploit.

It is confirmed to be an ‘exploit’ in the sense that it isn’t what the developers intended.

However, I can’t imagine that ANet think it’s harmful to the community if some players take advantage of it. Repeating this a dozen times would be sort of fun; repeating it four dozen times… not so much.

Sad news… :P

Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed a bug in which ember apples remained on the ground, which will now be destroyed when dropped.

Would have been funny if they also reset the achievement for all those that cheated and put the count at like -25.

You mean people who used the exploit? This isn’t the first activity that can be sped up considerably via weapon swap. Cheating would be actively working to defeat the game’s mechanics.

Also, while I think it would be “fair” to reset people’s accounts for this (and for using T2F the first day for the JP chieve/mastery), I think it would be a mistake; it would intensely annoy a small fraction of people and provide a modest amount of misery-loves-company joy for a similarly small group. It wouldn’t make things better for the community as a whole and therefore not really worth their time.

Probably wouldn’t be a good idea to reset or otherwise punish players since the Official GW2 Wiki encouraged players to use this ‘mechanic’.

Just would be bad press, I feel.

Exploit has been fixed, still seeing people with the title though. Spose that answers those questions.

The wiki is maintained by players, not Anet. I could edit a page to include a very bad exploit but that wouldn’t make it legit just because it’s on the wiki.

It’s cheating because you’re using the same apple 50 times which is pretty obvious that wasn’t intended. It’s similar to the concept of item duping.

Edit: Fixed an error/typo

“Cheating” is a strong word with all sorts of connotations. Neither you nor I get to decide on the definition as it applies to this game ; ANet reserves that right.

Further, it’s not at all obvious to me that this was unintended — as I mentioned, there are all sorts of ways you can use weapon swap (or weapon stow) in this game to speed up things, including gathering, completion of hearts, and certain rotations in combat. If ANet thought it was “cheating,” they have had plenty of opportunity to do something about it.

We know that it was unintended because a developer said so and because they plugged the loophole quickly. I don’t have a problem with that. However, I won’t call people names for having cheezed the mechanic ahead of the patch.

The achievements asks for 50 apples to be turned in. It is cheating because you’re using the same Apple 50 times. You know, like using a coin with a string attached (think Bender in Futurama).

What if I were doing the second tier of the precursor collections and moved the materials from my inventory, while the dialog box was still open, and was able to complete that collection item? Would you consider that cheating or abusing an exploit since I could now complete the entire second tier of the precursor collection without have to lose any of the items I needed to collect?

In no way is this similar to the other times you can weapon swap to speed things up. If the use of “cheating” isn’t to your liking then we can always go with abusing an exploit. Nobody here was calling them names.

Edit: Anyway, there’s really no point in going back and forth as this was patched. We have different opinions as to what is cheating or an exploit and we’re unlikely to agree.

I am quite aware of who maintains the Wiki, and who oversees it. My point is, the Wiki is Official, and bears the ArenaNet logo. ArenaNet would have a hard time, and bad press, by punishing players for following a suggestion provided in the Wiki, that sat there for a few days. If the ‘exploit’ was harmful to the game, I’m guessing it would have been fixed earlier than the next hotfix patch to roll around, just as the ‘soul-bound to another character’ problem was.

Regardless, I’m sure a small fraction of the community used the mechanic, and reaped the benefit of a Title and a Mastery Point quicker than the majority. In a month or so, with the Festivals and other content on its way, this will be all but forgotten.

Good luck.

The ‘exploit’ was even a part of Dulfys’ guide. So I would think more than a ‘small faction’ given the popularity of the site as well as the wiki guide. So ya the achievement should be reset for all. If they don’t do that, drop it to 20 apples for the rest to get this no grind achievement.
