If there’s an obstacle which is large enough to block you from walking, strafing – it will also block you from dodging,
For example on the first round tourney map (with the two bosses) the stairs leading up to the keep have two small ‘curb-ridges’ running along the stairs. They’re really small but you need to jump over them as you end up getting blocked if you run into them – despite being so small.
The dodging though, it doesn’t jump over them which looks odd and adds a new dynamic to that ‘area’ of the map which I don’t know if it was intentional.
Dodging into the little curb blocks you from moving past it like you’d expect. Which if you’re dodging not only to mitigate damage but to also get distance between an enemy it prevents that.
Last note: if this isn’t intentional it’s worth looking at similar animations such as rolls, evasive jumps and other things which are part of skills.
Edit: – only tested on sylvari ranger – I don’t know about other races/profs
