Q:
Dear ArenaNet,
Ever since the HoT expansion and masteries were introduced I cannot see my effective level, the only thing I can see is the spent mastery points.
When I am in an area where my effective level is different from my level I would really appreciate if I could see my effective level like before HoT.
Is there a way to fix this issue?
Thanks.
Not a Fix per se but if you bring up your hero tab, H default, it says your name, class, then effective level; being what level you’re currently getting scaled to.
Yes, I know that. The issue is that in combat I don’t usually view my Hero Panel. Before HoT it was visible in the EXP bar – and I am lacking that feature, because it has been overlapped by the Mastery Points.
Not a bug. But, you can add your suggestion to the QoL Suggestions Sticky.
Good luck.
Well, that should be originally there – the lack of it is a bug from my point of view.
Why would a level 80 need to see their effective level?
Why would a level 80 need to see their effective level?
Because effective level works vice-versa in this game.

Again, what use would effective level be for a level 80 player?
You can rest assured that a L80 has next to no issues in any sub-L80 area. It’s not really necessary to see what level your character may be down-leveled to whilst in combat.
If you feel the need to check your level, just look at any mob nearby, and (usually) add a level or two (to determine your character level). Not that it will make any difference. WAI.

Mostly because of some areas which seems a big buggy with their levels where the creatures could be significantly higher than your down scaled level. Like the ice element after the end of the tribulation cavern JP.
On the other hand in those cases you can tell from the color of the mob’s level display.

But the level 80 player gains no advantage by knowing their effective level. The issue I have is does anyone really want dev resources spent doing this when players can already go to the hero menu to see their effective level? What percentage of the player base would this actually matter for?
If you bring up your hero panel, your effective level is displayed in the top right-hand corner.

I am not referring to that I would “die” without this feature. I would just like to know the effective level of the area, and without Hero Panel. That’s all. It was working before HoT perfectly.

OP states it is not convenient to open the Hero panel during combat. I suggest checking before entering combat (by looking at the mobs’ level) and (usually) adding a level or two.
Though, I’m curious, as well, what difference it would make to know one’s adjusted level. At L80 in a sub-level map, one rarely has an issue. As stated above, only when encountering a bug, which is quite seldom.
Still, if one feels it is important, one can always play with the Hero panel open, and moved almost all the way off-screen to the left. This would allow the effective level to show at all times. =)
Knowing effective downscaled level is important in two cases:
In both cases, having the effective level display on the xp bar is a convenience and the disappearance of the number post-HoT appears to be intended behavior, i.e. this amounts to a suggestion to restore a past functionality, not a bug in how the game currently works.
Knowing effective downscaled level is important in two cases:
- If you are testing combat mechanics — there have been more than a few bugs in the formulas over time, especially with how break-points work in this game.
- If you are a certain sort of player and always want to know what the game is assuming about your character.

Well, you are 91% correct. However, I am sure the effective level icon is simply overlapped by the mastery points – this is why I insist that it is a bug. I don’t see any post that this feature was intentionally removed, therefore I am rightfully looking for it.
Here’s your ‘post’:
Because the Mastery training bar completely replaces the experience bar, players who’ve reached level 80 will no longer gain levels but will instead train Masteries.

Not a bug.

Thanks for your research, but would you be so kind and point to the part where they say “… and therefore effective level won’t be displayed anymore because of this…” ?
Because from my point of view, both could be displayed according to this article. Effective level has nothing to do with the “level 1 to level 80” part.
“completely replaces the experience bar” indicates that whatever we were used to seeing is no longer present.
However, it doesn’t matter if you’re convinced (or if you convince me) about whether ANet intended it or not. If it’s a bug, they’ll consider fixing it…or not.

“completely replaces”….can’t get much more clear than that.
Best of luck on your suggestion.
Okey, then not a bug. You’ve convinced me.
