Elementalist: Scepter and focus skills broken
I think the 2nd fire staff spell suffers from the same issue.

Interesting note from another forum-goer (hopefully mods will just merge these threads so they can find all notes in one place).:
It gets interrupted by autoattacking, along with focus fire 4 (firewall). It has something to do with reduction of the aftercast after recent patch. You have to disable the autoattack to get it working.
I’ve already made a post about it in bugs section. Feel free to post the video there as well so there’s bigger chance devs notice it.
And another note from that thread:
Yeah, it’s any skill with a cast time. If you try to queue anything that’s not insta-cast, it doesn’t interrupt the skill per-se, because shatterstone will still go through it’s FULL 1 second cast, but the shatterstone will never actually show up… Bad.

I started an elementalist today just to try it out. If I was a brand new player, and one of the first powers I have access to doesn’t work, I’d probably just drop this game immediately. You guys really need to fix this right away. It makes a terrible first impression.
I can second this. I was just leveling a new ele, and it was very frustrating.
To add to this, any skill action taken after trying to case Focus 4 Fire Flamewall will interrupt it. This includes changing attunement and instant cast skills.

I was noticing the same issue with Shatterstone and Flamewall.
It’s quite annoying. Now I have to keep spamming 1.
I also noticed frost bow going to full CD without casting a bow for getting hit and also for dodging whilst trying to cast it. No idea if this has been introduced with the patch or was the same before and I just didn’t notice it by now…?

I have to agree that if I was a new player, this would really turn me off to the game. I’ve played ele as staff for a while, just now trying out scepter and focus and immediately noticed it. Very annoying since I wanted to try something other than staff ele.

It would be nice if the mods had bothered to fix this when they patched all of that other stuff yesterday. This issue is not limited to elementalists.
I’ll add my voice to this (like I did in this thread) to say I’ve had this issue multiple times on scepter and focus with my elementalist ever since the 25th.
I can’t seem to replicate the bug out of combat but, in combat, dodging or swapping attunements right after casting Shatterstone or Flamewall will cancel the casting.
After lots of failed casts of Shatterstone, I knew something was broken here. This skill is now a channel, and gets interrupted the same way as dragon tooth does, except without the animation completing.
The channel is really unnecessary for such a bad skill, but at the very least, other skill should chain after it instead of interrupt it.
I have this bug too. Glad to see I’m not going crazy!

I noticed this problem today as well. The vulnerability from scepter water 2 is the only thing that makes water worth using for DPS. The focus fire 4 ability is also annoying since it is a combo field.
These 2 big bugs weaken my favourite weapons in dungeons.
Shatterstone and Flamewall are useless in the current state.

After recent patch, Scepter Water 2 and Focus Fire 4 get interrupted by auto attack, resulting in failure to cast said spells. I suspect it has something to do with the reduction of the aftercast.
There might be other skills broken in the same way on other weapons, though I haven’t got chance to test it yet.
I’ve played a bit more with my elementalist and I tested this a bit by immediately clicking on the ground after casting Shatterstone (scepter 2) or Flamewall (focus 4). I still get some cancels but, a lot less. So, this confirms that the auto-attack skill is cancelling those spells.
Same issues here.
For me this is almost a “showstopper” – Very frustrating.

I’ve had a similar issue while spawning an ice bow, where if you queue a skill (usually for me it’s activating the #4 aoe) for after the ice bow spawns, it glitches out the ice bow entirely so that it never spawns (in hand or on the ground) but still goes into its cool down.
Don’t worry. This bug will be fixed on July 25th.

I’ve posted in similar threads, but I’ve had these issues since the latest patch as well.
This bug isn’t limited to elementalists: I’ve had my Scepter auto attack cancel ou Smite on my guardian. I think it’s a generalised bug; elementalist scepter and focus just seem to be the most obvious ones.
Well its been 7 days since the 25th and still no fix for this they seem to be too focused on the air pirate event to bother with this so maybe in a months time we’ll get a fix for it.

I hope it doesn’t take that long; having the auto attack interrupt skills with long casting time really messes with how the game is played for everyone.

Yep, this is it. I just checked again and when I unmark fast cast ground targeting I have the same issue, has to be the reason you said, spell is targeted in between autoattacks. Try getting used to fast ground targeting until they fix this, personally I think it is much more effective then point and click but that’s just my opinion Also something working bad shouldn’t be a reason to force every player to use one determined option if they can choose between two.
Now I also wonder if this happens with other professions. We have it confirmed with ele, out of curiosity I tried with my thief using cluster bomb and it doesn’t happen. The thing is cluster bomb has 0.5s casting time and shatterstone has 2s casting time and I think there is the problem, arenanet should look into it but as usual we got no response.

Right now, the work around is to turn off your auto attack and NOT spam 1 immediately after casting it. Annoying i know.
I can’t believe there’s no word on this yet. Then again maybe they’re working on all the problems. It’s not just elementalist suffering from odd things happening with the timing differences. Auto attack being off just isn’t a long-term option. Or even short term if you value your fingers.

I’m brand new (bought the game on the 2nd) and this was VERY confusing for me. I couldn’t decide whether I’d rather turn off auto attack and spam 1 or just never use some of my spells. Glad to see everyone thinks this is a bug because that gives me hope it might get fixed.
I only just started playing an elementalist and this bug was indeed very confusing. Also quite disappointing to meet a new class with such a glaring bug, that makes two of abilities unusable in most situations.
I hope devs will find an easy to apply solution soon.

Just chiming in to say, began an ele the other night, really felt a groove with scepter/focus, then noticed the 2-skill was bugging out. This seems to have been going on for a long while – it’s pretty damaging to the flow of combat :-/
Scepter water #2 doesn’t do anything at all, even when used by itself. You can place the ground target, but nothing happens. It’s not that it gets interrupted….it just doesn’t activate at all.

Some things I’ve noticed with this in particular:
- If I initiate combat with this (from a non-combat state) it will go off without a hitch – however, once my auto-1 skill begins, then I get the issue you described.
- However, if I finish the mob(s) and go back to non-combat mode, I can once again open combat with the 2 skill without issue.
I presume this has to tie-in with the auto-attack time-somethings being talked about. I haven’t really studied the conditions though, so I’m not sure about attunement swaps or other details.
