This bug has been in the game after one patch in fall last year, so over a year. I’m not aware of Anet ever acknowledging its existence. There was one old thread in these forums where an Anet employee asked to see examples of this error from users who reported it, but made no further reply.

I get this error quite often if I try to sell multiple items too fast. I’ve read here on the forums before from other members that it is an anti-botting measure. I have never seen an official response from the devs so that makes me think that this is true and they are not allowed to say.

Well, if its an anti botting measure, it is inhibiting my play. Im not selling fast at all, but I may be selling a lot of items.. the game make sit almost impossible to sell fast. You have to click the item, then click sell, then click ok, then click another item.

They don’t seem to want to comment on this “error”.

If it is for bot prevention, why would they make it look like a bug or bad programming ?

It is VERY annoying when you have 150 or so items to sell.

I gave up clicking “OK” after selling something as it doesn’t do anything (There’s not a choice like “OK” or “Cancel”), I don’t even understand why the OK is there, it’s just an extra thing to click, so I don’t bother and just move on to the next item, it doesn’t make any difference whatsoever to the “Error attempting to sell”.

And after you sell the first maybe 8 if your lucky items, then you get the error every 2 or 3 items, it drives me mad.

the OK is just a confirmation that your listing went through. no need to click it, you could just exit out of the window or click on the next item to sell instead. I like that part.
the error happens if you sell around 7 items during 30 seconds length of time. so if you sell 7 items, then wait 30 seconds you should be able to sell 7 more. or sell 1 item, wait 4 seconds, sell 1 more, etc.
if you noticed, I just outlined how any TP-selling bot would be programmed to sell 20,160 items per day. which illustrates why this error is not intended to prevent bots (if it is, it’s a noob method).
what it is intended to do, no one has been able to prove. server congestion doesn’t make sense, as you can buy items as quick as you can click. my bet is currently either failed bot-control or shoddy programming (like the game will cache your item for sale client-side, then send it to the server every 30 seconds or so, but due memory-allocation error, they only gave it enough memory for 7 items)

This is, as far as I know a botting prevention thing. It is really annoying, but so are many of the other punishments you must endure because a few cheat.

“Rather to let one guilty man go free, than to punish an innocent man.” Does not apply in Guild Wars 2. Once an exploit is found, everyone gets punished for people using it. Hence: food that is account bound, not being able to sell food to merchants, Diminishing Returns, once a day nodes…the list goes on and on.

“You cannot legislate morality.” could easily be changed to “You cannot program out bad behavior.”

But programmers and developers will continue to try, to the detriment of us all.

Can you provide a quote for that? The patch notes didn’t mention it.
