Fastcast click-on-release
Must be used with the number keys on your keyboard. Press and hold the number for your skill, then release the key when your mouse pointer is where you with to activate the skill. Does not work with mouse-clicking the skill icon.

thx I figured it out! (Mods can delete)
It seems that you are using your left mouse button to click on the skill to activate it instead of pressing the associated bound key for the skill.
You’re right, activating the skill via left click will lock the cursor and camera and the aoe spell is unable to be positioned properly.
It’s best to hold the bound activation key for the aoe spell and release the bound key to fire it at the target area.
I feel that the cursor being locked upon left click-holding on the skill box actually is a bug, as the cursor should still be able to move to the desired position for deployment.
Until this is fixed you should instead use the bound skill key for holding, positioning and releasing for deployment of aoe spells.
- Weapon Skill 2 = AoE Spell
- Weapon Skill 2 = Bound to #2 key
- Hold #2 key and move cursor to position aoe target at desired area
- Release #2 key to deploy at target area

It would be cool, though, if you could click the icon to activate, and then drag your pointer to the target. I am a mouser more than I care to admit. I really miss the GW1 feature of being able to move my camera view while right-clicking over the skill bar. That way I could keep my pointer over the opening combat skill I generally use, and be ready to activate it on a moments notice. In GW2 I lose a precious half-second moving my pointer into position. Keyboard is faster, and I use it whenever possible. But my fingers don’t reach all the skill keys while I have one hand on my mouse. Thinkin’ about looking into a left-hand controller of some sort.
