By this thread I want to take a closer look a the attack animations of the new Elite Specialisations and the Revenant.

Most of the attack/weapon animations are good and cool. But almost all auto-attack animations have to be redone or rather be replaced.


The Reaper’s greatsword:

The auto-attack is very slow. First two movements are the normal greatswords moves and the last one resembles Ranger’s Maul.
Problem: An auto-attack needs to be fluent, but the current one bugs out a bit (especially on Norn).
Suggestion: Since the auto-attack needs to be slower than a normal one (Because of the damage, that’s what you guys said.), why do you not use the Ranger’s auto-attack animation? And keep the icy effect of course. It’s a fluent animation AND only been used by Rangers for now.
That way you will have Guardians and Warriors using one animation, and Rangers and Reapers using another animation. At least it will not bug out anymore.
But leave the Reaper’s Shroud’s auto-attack where it is. By this, Necromancer can have two greatsword auto-attack animations.

By the way: Why do Reapers hold their scythe like a hammer but use the greatsword attack animations? XD


The Revenant:

Mace & Sword:
As a posted before, almost every auto-attack of the Revenant needs to be replaced, since they all bug out.
Problem: The mace’s auto-attack bugs out (especially while running) and the sword’s auto-attack bugs out like hell.
Suggestion:: Please, use the normal working animations for the mace and the one-handed sword. I know, you guys wanted to do something special, but please, not for the auto-attacks. The other skills look cool and the new ones look well done. But please, please! The auto-attacks have to stay normal and more important: stay fluent.

Staff:
I also politely ask you, to change the way the Revenant is holding his staff. He holds it like a hammer, but he can already use a hammer. Also, the way the staves are hold and the attack animations do not harmonise all of the time.
Suggestion: Just use the normal staff’s running and idle animations. For both the Elementalist’s attack animations and the Guardian’s attack animations, the normal way a staff is been hold already works out very well. And do not forget, that Mesmer’s are also holding their greatsword normaly, but do have a completely different attack animation in contrast to a Guardian/Warrior/Ranger/Reaper. But it still harmonises perfectly.

I also want my future Asuran Revenant to do the cool staff spinning idle animation.

The Dragonhunter’s bow, the Tempest’s warhorn, and the Chronomancer’s shield. They all do work well and do not have to be altered.

Also keep in mind please, that only the auto-attacks need to be replaced. All the other animations do work and look cool.

Another powerful argument, that it will be possible to change the staff stance to it’s original one, while maintaining the attack animations.
The Princess Doll uses the staff’s stance for her Princess Wand, but performs the Necromancer’s scepter attack. Necromancers on the other hand, use their one-handed weapon stance to perform the attack (-> here & here). They both harmonise and do not bug out, like the Revenant’s staff animations.

As said before: It would have been a nice idea to use the hammer stance on staves, if Revenants would not have any access to it. But they can use a hammer already. So, please, give Revenants the opportunity to gain access to the staff’s running and — more important — to the staff’s idle animations.

Since you changed or will change some attacks of the Revenant, please remember to fix the animations. While the staff-hammer-stance may still be debatable (I still think, it should become the staff stance.), the sword auto attack chain and the mace AA really need to be fixed/replaced with the suggested ones.

I noticed last night that marjory has a very fluid looking greatsword skill chain which doesn’t appear to mimic any other animation. Why was this not used, at least for the other races on that wireframe?

Well, the auto-attacks, especially the revenant’s sword attack, still do look like kitten.

Wtf, ANet? Why is the druid holding his staff like a hammer, too?
He only uses staff animations and the auto-attack was taken from the elementalist’s Lightning Surge. There is not even a single animation, which was taken from the hammer, so there is no need, that the staff should not been hold like a staff.

But now you convinced me. Ever weapon should be wield like in the core game. Every staff has to be hold like a staff, no matter what the attack animations may look like.
I will write a report every day, till this kitten has finally been fixed.
