gw2 dosen’t close when I exit the game.

Gw2.exe stays open after closing the game. I have to use task manager to delete process. It then takes a good 5-10 minutes for task manager to close the game.

If I do not do this I can not open another game.

Not a big deal, unless I get d/c’d from GW2 during pvp match….. automatic loss! Can’t take advantage of this SSD reload time * (

I get that every so often as well, it shouldn’t take 5-10 minutes to end the task though. Are you letting windows look for a solution? I never let windows look for a solution, it never finds one…

I think that Gw2.exe not closing may have something to do with other programs running in the background, it doesn’t seem to happen when GW2 is one of the only programs running.

I’ve seen this internally a couple times but we don’t really have a good reproduction case. The current theory is that something is causing a “soft leak” with our model files so when the game closes it has to go through thousands of model references and close them down. This involves a lot of cross-thread communication which can be extremely slow on some hardware.

If you can get a solid reproduction case (WvW/PvP/world bosses/etc.) could you post here?

Thanks!

Judging from the red comment this is probably a different bug.
I’ve also had the one you described since launch, whenever I logout-to-launcher or get disconnected— 100% reproduceable

Having the same issue, started with the March 16th update. After exiting, Process Explorer shows gw2.exe as a background process and wdmaud.drv (an unused sound driver) attached to it, up to 5 minutes after “closing” gw2. I have an external maudio fast-track-pro for mic input, but GW2 is not supposed to be using it. I have reinstalled everything, reloaded drivers..

It seemed fixed 10 days ago after rebuilding the local.dat files with the sound set explicitly to Realtek. Then after a recent patch (around when this thread started) the problem has returned, and now seems unfixable, mumble overlays also suddenly broke with this patch :/

Seriously annoying bug since me and my wife have multiple accounts on one machine and also like to twitch stream on a third account. Can no longer relog into a different account without shutting down, relogging into windows, or waiting the five minutes and then spamming “End Task” in task manager.

I had posted the same/related issue a while back at the thread below, it has a few more details:

After a ton of debugging, can safely say GW2 is no longer playing nice with certain audio drivers. It’s apparently pre-loading/querying audio devices, even those NOT selected for use, then not terminating them properly on exit.

Completely removed all Maudio drivers (which prior to these buggy game updates GW2 worked perfectly fine with) , the 5 minute hang disappeared.

No such problems with TESO, GW2 versions prior to March, or any other software.

If you’re suddenly having these 5 minute hangs on every single exit, it’s likely drivers/resources not being properly released by GW2.

Basically stuck with the hangs unless Anet decides to squash this resource bug :/

Axiom could you try something? Run the game with “-nosound” on the command line for a couple days and let me know if you reproduce the issue.

Thanks!

Not sure if its related but I saw a few similarities so I figured just in case.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Logging-out-bug/first#post4981250

Basically when I log out the game freezes on a black screen or a white one. I can usually ctrl alt delete to close it but sometimes have to restart. Brand new gaming laptop with no problems on any other games and no problems on gw2 until the latest update. Also usually when I log out on my main account its fine but with the $10 sale I bought a few alt accounts and that’s usually when this happens. If it helps the characters are low levels, in the grove, or queensdale.

Specs: i7, windows 8.1, gfx 960 or 980 (forget which one) 16ram, ssd hd and 1tb hard drive. MSI stealth gaming laptop. Not an overheating or internet connection issue.

ps: sorry if its a different bug, just saw some similarities, also that one comment about multiple accounts and restarting. Hope this helps either here or with a different issue.

Tried -nosound prior to the April 7th patches, but went ahead and have tried a few more times today and overnight in case something changed. Deleted the local.dat files, and the gw2cache folders, and did clean runs from command line.

Experienced the same issues, except without any sound in the game.

Upon exit, Process Explorer shows Gw2.exe running in the background, with wdmaud.drv !mxdMessage+0xa41e with an increasing Cycles Delta. Attempting to launch the game a second time I eventually receive the “Already Running” splash window. 5 minutes later, it finally closes.

Appears that something within Gw2.exe is still calling up WDM audio, even with -nosound (yet there was indeed no sound audible in game when using -nosound ). Uninstalling the external maudio sound drivers, gw2.exe closes normally.

I’ve been having this issue for close to 2 months. Whenever I close my GW2 client, or lose my internet connection, the process will continue to run in the background for the next 4-5 minutes. Preventing me from starting the game again because there’s an instance already running.

Usually in this scenario, I’d just open up Processes in Task Manager, find it and kill it. However, if it were that simple I wouldn’t be making this post right now. When I do go to kill the process, it just sits there, nothing. The GW2.exe process WILL NOT DIE. So when I get dc’d during a dungeon, or a PvP match, it becomes an incredible inconvenience to myself and those whom I play with.

Initially I thought it might just be my computer, I hadn’t reformatted in a long time. Until I recently purchased a new SSD and made a clean install of everything on it as my new primary storage (also where GW2 is currently installed). I thought maybe this will also resolve the issue with the gw2.exe process not stopping.

Low and behold, it hasn’t, and I’m still suffering with this bug where the process will not stop! There is no other process (except for the Windows OS essentials) that I have this problem with, only the gw2.exe.

Had the same thing.
However, also had TeamSpeak3 active.

TaskManager would allow you to close processes on GW2-exe-32 but the thread for GW2-exe-32 would still be running, until I also closed down TeamSpeak3 (most recent update), where the process then completed.

Just a Q to all the others here, do you also use TeamSpeak 3?

Oh, the teamspeak had in the shortcut : " -nosingleinstance

I’m testing removing this now, but it was useful to be in multiple TS groups.

======

Removing the " -noSingleInstance has seemed to help me at the moment from the TS3 shortcut.

======
No. It still has problems.
The route to clear out of task manager was:
Set Afinity: 1 CPU
Wait
Set Afinity: To what it was before,

No Teamspeak running on mine, instead an external FastTrack Pro for mic input.

Does it here by simply having the maudio mic drivers installed, regardless of having anything audio related open (mumble, teamspeak, etc, all closed).

Appears to be a resource/audio hook problem, gw2.exe tapping into resources that it shouldn’t (certain audio input devices), then not releasing them on exit (either due to code, or lack of permissions). Guessing the common element is gw2.exe grabbing the mic / communication devices instead of just audio output devices.

Attempted the Affinity trick with no effect, but that trick might be more dependent with ‘what’ gw2.exe is holding open, so might help others.

A possible side-effect of the bug:
Since the April 10ish hotpatch, when the gw2.exe process has stalled and eventually closes, the mumble overlay no longer works on subsequent launches unless fired off in a precise order. It must be started after the GW2 launcher, but before hitting play. (In the past it worked fine when started before the launcher, and always worked fine after restarting the game.) The overlay still works as it always had on computers without the gw2.exe exiting bug.

I only mention it since it acts like a side-effect of this bug. That on certain systems the gw2.exe process is splintering confusing instances between the launcher and game client, with one of them contesting audio resources..

Having none of these problems with Elder Scrolls Online, any Steam games, or any other software on the same system, so unlikely a windows update, driver, or permissions issue…

With me it only recently happened within last week.
The other recently thing I have updated is my NVidia Drivers ( Version 350.12 )

The Affinity thing:
I did also try and starve GW.exe.32* for a bit by lowering its’ priority and giving it no CPUs to use. However, I’m not sure if this helped that much.

The biggest problem is when It happens it prevents GW from submitting any bug reports, is it possible for these to be able to be “saved for later submittance”? The only button to click you have is wait. It is almost like the GW.exe.32* threads are blocking any internet access to Anet.

To check this theory I attempted to run Guild Wars Diagnostic while the problem was running, not sure if this was helpful – it couldn’t see any network paths. However, other internet applications were connecting fine.

Sorry it took so long to test out. Was at the RSA conference all week.

I did a clean install of Nvidia Driver 347.88, which did fix the strange Mumble overlay problems. (I had temporarily used 350.xx before rolling back and sticking with 332.21)

This did NOT fix the original issue though. Gw2.exe still hanging 5 minutes after every “Exit to Desktop”. Still shows gw2.exe hung via windows WDM Audio, usb/M-audio microphone drivers.

…When using “Log out” instead of “Exit to Desktop” it generates a spinning mouse icon and second gw2.exe background process which eventually brings up the “Already Running” info box due to the existing hang.

I would like to bring attention to this thread, I’m still suffering with the same issue. I’ve recently upgraded my CPU + Motherboard, along with kitten referred to in a previous post on this thread. Takes a good 5-6 minutes for the GW2 process to stop. It’s faster to just restart my PC each time.

I don’t seem to suffer from this problem, it may look simple but I don’t know, I always exit GW by pressing Alt+F4 and this thing has never happened. However it did hard crash my game when I installed Mumble, and running Mumble causes the game to act weird, sometimes it won’t launch because of some “no 3D” error having something to do with DirectX, even though all drivers and programs are 100% updated.

I will add up to this thread by confirming that I have same issue as user Axiom.9742 – using M-Audio Audiophile 2496 sound drivers, I had to remove driver and game does not linger in task manager anymore for 5 minutes after exiting/dc-ing/hot-fixing.

Also can confirm that task manager process cannot be ended, it is either waiting 5 minutes or restarting PC.

So it seems to be tied up to specific audio drivers.

Also, very important to note, I was NEVER using M-Audio for game sounds – I use Syberia V2 Illuminated headset (integrated USB sound card), so the real question is how that driver gets engaged by the game at all.

I am going by memory but as I recall sometime ago I was getting all manner of issues with the Game hanging with the crash log showing it an Audio driver that my setup did not use. I mucked with drivers forever and finally just started running the Client in XP compatibility mode and after that no more issues.

I am not saying this will fix this problem but it so very similar to the one I had.

Just wanted to chirp in, as I’ve been having this issue for nearly 2 years, and only just today managed to get it fixed! Same with Srebrna, I have an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 in my machine which I’ve used for much longer than this issue had been occurring (hence it not flagging as a possible factor for me).

Disabling the drivers for my audiophile 2496 resolves the problem straight away.
